Homemade87,
did you have to change anything to run the tach and fuel gage setup?

I used a reg cluster. You do have to remove the lower warning lights. You have to cut out the housing to get the new assembley to sit in there. Not a big deal to cut it out. Here is a thread with some good info on this topic. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=470240 .

They are electric, do you mean convert them to mech?

Here's the writeup on how to fix a stock one: http://www.howtoalmanac.com/kevin/pr...chfixtruck.htm

I Can't believe I got the old tach I had laying around working! I looked at your post and thought I'll give that a shot on my blown tach.

went to the electronics store got the potentiometer came home put it all together and couldn't believe it! the tach never came close to working before. I'd hook it up and it would just bury the needle. I had an autometer tach laying around and I was able to tune the stock one to match. What a badass idea! I cant believe more ppl don't know bout this mod. Even if your tach works you could add the potentiometer to dial it in!

I couldn't get the pot to lay flat enough on the circuit board to seat the tach into the plastic properly so I just glued it to the back of the tach face and ran some wires to it. I love my cluster now its got everything! Clock and tach Ps. I got the tach a year ago at the junk yard and was super bummed when it didn't work.

Sorry for the crappy pics my garage is dark and I only had my phone camera.

Thanks a lot man!

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

Sweet! Its all thanks to Kevin who made the How to Almanac, I just shared the info here for other people to see. Im glad someone else got there's fixed, I imagine every factory tach out there needs this done weather it works or not.

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

I Contacted Wilcox and the truck board is 88.00.

Due to the their expernece with truck parts vendors not expressing intrest in carying this part.

Here is the link.

http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=27330

I will buy one for sure but I was hoping LMC, classis industries, etc., would want to carry a part like this?

Oh Well

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

Cool, I couldn't find the link to it. That's a little more than I would have hoped for but still better than having it sent off to get fixed.

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

There was a company on ebay that was selling them already done like that but I can't find anything about them now.

Just get a Canadian 140 version and rub off the KPH.

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

Found me a tach today at the junk yard. Got the whole cluster for 25 bucks. I put the posative and negative on the battery and confirmed that it went to zero now to test it conected to the HEI. I see that the aftermarket one that JKnight bought got the power and ground from the small fuel gague would i be able to do this with a stock unit? Which side of small fuel gague is power and ground?

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

Yes i got the tach harness with it. Im just trying to get it wired without having to run long lengths of wire, thats why i wanted to get power and ground from fuel gauge, also i want to know if there is a way i could test temp, and volt gauge outside of truck before i install them just to verify they work. The cluster is out of a 77 mine being a 79. i want to move over the brake warning light to the speedometer housing, since my truck is not 4wheel drive i could just swap over the plastics but which wires would have to be moved in the pin of harness?

Re: 7K 73-87 tachs

Does any one have any experience with a factory diesel tach on a 6.2 diesel engine?
How did the factory run the tach on the big diesels?

It should be the same, just 4K instead of 5K.

Same as what?
Diesels don't have ignition coils...

Anyone know if the factory tachs will run of the alternator?

I ordered the GM Sport Salvage one a few minutes ago. Hopefully it will work in the '91 cluster.
