Re: Model Kits

I've bought a few kits just to collect. One was the Dodge Stealth Indy Official Car, because they ditched the idea of using it, figured it would be rare. But AMT popped a million of them, and the price is about one cent more than when I got it, so I built it. I would rather build than collect. The other problem, some tires melt plastic, Revell packaged the tires and plastic without bags, so when the tires set for a long time on the plastic, there is a reaction and the parts are ruined, so what's the point of calling a sealed kit valuable, when you open and find out, it's junk.

You asked about paint. Splash Paints can custom mix, send them the paint code via email, I sent a screenshot of the paint chip chart and specified which color. They have immediate turn around time, awesome service. The paint is ready to airbrush. I have not tried their primer yet, I got a bottle, or their two part clear coat. Tell them I sent you.

Re: Model Kits

I get impatient and hate waiting for stuff lol. Used to be able to get to K-mart or Walmart and buy paint, but Kmart is gone and Wallyworld doesn't carry that stuff anymore. No decent hobby shops where I am, and what ones there are cater to RC or arts an crafts BS. I do have an airbrush, but have to paint downstairs and all the fumes eventually come upstairs. Just painted the 66 suburban model, when wet looked good, but once dried was all F'd up. Dunno what happened, now need to sand it down n do it again....

Re: Model Kits

hey that's too bad about your paint on the sub b-rat..
instead of sanding, why not throw your sub in a container with some Super Clean. it will strip off the paint waaay easier than sanding. if the paint is stubborn, put it in a container of dot 3, between them it will come out like virgin plastic again.
and if i don't use my airbrush, i always use Krylon. good paint, lays down smooth. good luck on the next paint job

Re: Model Kits

I've heard of the brake fluid, but not the Super Clean!! Can you use it more than once? What I've heard bout brake fluid, one time deal. The paint on the burb is smooth, it almost looks like it had a reaction with the plastic/paint. I washed it in hot soapy water, warmed the can up in hot water, shaked the **** outta it, so maybe the paint was old or something. I'll take it the shop where I got it, maybe he be nice and give me a new can.

Re: Model Kits

Nice! My favorite is that '60 Chevy in the second picture. I bought kits to build... at some point. But then I got caught up in rounding up all 67-72 kits made. That's when I sold off some other vehicle kits. I wanted to reduce while fine tuning my collection to the real trucks I am into. I did that with a lot of diecast I had collected, too. Now some kits I just can't bring myself to tear into, after surviving so long untouched. The good news is these days there are re-issues to open and build. But I still haven't gotten back into building... yet

Funny, I just got that '60 for Christmas from my Daughter. Now I have a few un-built kits.

Re: Model Kits

The '60 is a recent release. They probably still have them on the shelf at Hobby Lobby and with the 40% off online coupon it's a steal. I only buy what I like too, problem is I like a lot Recent releases are going with a vintage package look, but I have several actual vintage ones too. The two Johann kits are old vintage, the Mack not as old but I've heard it will never be rereleased. Apparently Mack didn't like how their brand was being portrayed.

Re: Model Kits

They could have at least used R-model out of respect. I have a Peterbilt 359 kit I bought in the '70s. I'd like to build that one. I have a log trailer as well. But again, worth too much unassembled to consider building that one. I also have a '67 Harley Electra-Glide unbuilt model... to valuable to build. I only buy what I like but I decided, except for a few kits, to narrow it down to just GM Trucks. I got pretty good money for my built and even partial built kits. I mostly sold them because I needed the money.

Built or in the box, it's just going to sit there. I can't drive it after I build it like I could a 1970 Cuda.

Re: Model Kits

Got another today. Now I can build my S10 without taking apart the one I built before. I need two kits to make a long bed, the wave rider and this one. The other one I built to match the truck before my friend sold it to me. I didn't care to make a long bed then. I made the '90-'92 grill.

Re: Model Kits

Picked up this AMT 1950 3100 Chevy truck the other day. Heading out Monday to pick up some Testers paint and get started. This will be my first build since the early 60's. Found these wheels and tire that online that are an exact match to what I have on my 1949 Chevy 5 window full size truck. I'm going to try and memic my 49.

I beg to argue with you about this point.
Case in point A, Porndy:
Monogram Porsche 904, slot car era curbside, meet Monogram Indy race car V8, really "historic" stored in the basement of the museum.

Case B, Mongrel:
Monogram Ferrari 275P, slot car era, meet Revell 360 Modena V8.

Case C, just plain scarce Ferraris:

Case D, Celilexus:
Believe it or not, the Toyota Celsior (Lexus in the US) is a rare kit, V8 and chassis pan slipped in.

Case E, AMT '72 pickup (converted to '69):
Heard rumors of a re-pop, should be very popular.

Current WIP is a long out of production kit of a rare subject, from a dead company. Also not a Chevy, but the Lamborghini Cheetah (not the LM002). So I am into wrecking the value of collectible kits that are going for stupid money on eBay.

That's cool that one is being done. I've collected one of each original but I stock up on these re-issues for when I'm ready to build them. Just too much on my plate these days

Re: Model Kits

I was wondering if one of the models kits you have, if I can still find one. It's the 1970 Chevy Tuck made by MPC 1/25 scale NHRA C20 kits with 2building versions. I would love to get my hands on that model kit.

Re: Model Kits

I don't know if that one has been redone. It certainly is about my favorite. The one kit that has evaded me I only saw once on Ebay over 10 years ago. I think it was a '70 AMT kit, but was a Europe issue. Coolest box art ever. I have it pictured in my head, lost actual picture in a computer crash a couple laptops back. It's art, not a photo, of a driveway scene. Garage door open, truck part way in, front sticking out, behind a front engine rail dragster. What I wouldn't give for that one. I was to broke to buy a pot to piss in that week. I think it was during the recession. I'd be happy with just a picture of the box top to enlarge and frame. The Holy Grail of Chevy Truck model kits. I guess there were other European issue kits in other years. That's the only one I ever knew of. I believe that one was in England or France
