Re: 6.2 starting issues
Diesels need 2 things. Fuel & Compression. These 6.x Detroits also need glow plugs to really get enough fire when they're cold.
Your tests show you have two of the three. Fuel and probably Glow. Have you checked the compression on all 8 cylinders? Numbers should be in the 350-500psi range. Each cylinder should be within 75% of the other 7. If #4 is 410 then no cylinder should be less than 305. 300psi is a minimum for ignition but it will be hard starting and smoky at 300. The compression gauge has an adapter to screw into the glow plug hole. I usually remove all the glow plugs to make it crank easier. Unplug the FSS and HPCA before you crank it because it's possible to fire a cylinder and blow up the gauge. Do not ever add oil to the cylinders. It could fire that cylinder and blow up the gauge. Wear eye and face protection and don't look directly at the glow holes as the compression blows chunks of carbon and rust around. Re: 6.2 starting issues
Ok. I'm getting frustrated.
Maybe I need to go back and reread my thread. The truck ran out of diesel. Plan in simple. Why are you suggesting I do a compression test? From what I know I just need to prime/purge the fuel lines. This truck ran great before it ran out of fuel. Sorry for the frustration but these tiny steps don't seem to be heading into the direction of my actual problem. Posted via Mobile Device |

You've tested the glows and the FSS is working. Quote:
Since you ran it out I'd replace the filter. Then you'll need to fully bleed the filter assembly. Crank with the FSS unplugged and the air bleed screw removed from the top till fuel comes out. Re-install the plastic screw finger tight with a new o-ring. Crank again with the fuel return fitting removed from the injection pump till you get fuel. Re-install and crank the engine with the FSS plugged back in. She should hack and cough and generally run like crap for several minutes till the rest of the air bleeds through.

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Good!! Not that POS Stanadyne 80. Fram isn't my first choice but they don't leak.
Replace the primary filter and fill it with fresh diesel fuel. Replace the secondary filter dry or fill with Dexron III. If you've replaced them already skip the new filters and fill the primary filter only with fresh diesel fuel. Prime the secondary and the injection pump. BY... Clean any crud from around the return hose. Remove the fuel return line from the top of the injection pump. Crank the engine till fuel flows with no air. Once the injection pump is full re-install the fuel return and crank it... stopping every 30 seconds or so. It should fire after a minute or two and run like crap for a while till it blows the air out...

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Be sure to unplug the FSS (pink wire) while you're priming it. If it starts with the return off you'll spray fuel everywhere.

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Sweet thank you. And sorry for not making it clear what I was having problems with. The filters have not been replaced. I'll do so tonight and get back with you then. Thanks again, you guys have been very quick to response to my needs(I'm a member of another forum board for a different type of car and it's like talking to a wall). I hope I can learn more about these trucks/motors and be someones saving
grace some day. James Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 6.2 starting issues
All air is out and it still will not start. What's the deal? It cranks and doesn't even act like it is wanting to fire up and start. Are there fuel pumps on these saddle tanks? Or just the injector pump? This is really getting frustrating.

Re: 6.2 starting issues
When you crack the lines are you getting dribbles of diesel when you crank it over?

He told me only to remove the fuel injector return line until it shots fuel with no air. Are you refering to the lines to the cylinders?

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Okay.
Let me make sure I got this all right. When priming I need to have the pink wire off(the injector pump), the return line(from injector pump) all 8 fuel lines cracked. Is this correct? I need to wait untill the fuel lines or dripping in fuel and the return line pushing just fuel out and no air? IF that is all correct. Can you help out with one more question. In the picture I post in post #30 is that primary fuel filter(the big one i hope thats called the primary) is that nozzle thing on top suppose to be screwed all the down or all the way up. I believe its all the way in the up position in that picture. I have messed with it think it was a pump like on bigger straight trucks but it isn't. James |

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Leave the pink wire on when you crack the lines.
Crack one line at a time, crank it over until you get dribbles of diesel. Once you get dribbles from all the lines, hit the glows a couple times and it should pop off. Hook the return back on for now.... is any diesel coming out of the return?

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Then you not getting fuel to the filters, pull the big line off the filter that comes from the lift pump on the motor.
Crank it over to see if you get diesel pumping out. If not you will have to pull the line off the lift pump and blow some air in it, might be some blockage between the lift pump and the tank Just a little air pressure will do, pull the gas cap off and listen for air escaping. Dual or single tanks?

Re: 6.2 starting issues
The the lines do not go into each others filter. The small filter goes down the fire wall I'm guessing to a tank. I have duel tanks. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 6.2 starting issues
Pull the line coming off the lift pump on the motor that goes to the filters, crank it over and see if you get fuel coming out. If you do then pull the line coming out of the filter and see if you get fuel there.
If you don't then there has to be blockage before the lift pump or the lift pump is the issue.
