Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Now that is brave cutting out the pillar like that, I'd be pretty worried i'd be looking for a new cab before it was all over..

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
It is scary cutting it out. I have been removing small sections at a time as I only have 1 chance to get it right. I will be installing it next week end. I just have to remove some metal at the top of the quad cab started on it last night and should have it ready for next week end.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Good luck! I hope to start my sheet metal next summer, i don't have a large enough garage so i have to work under a car cover in the side of my garage for that part.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I don't have much room either. part of 2 car garage and my driveway. Right now the Suburban and truck take up the driveway and my daily driver is parked in the street. do you have the option to inclose your carport for the build.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I wish i had a car port! I have one of the vinyl 10X20 car covers you get at auto parts stores, its on the side of my garage, it does have the side skirts on it. I have contemplated having a permanent car port built but i don't think it would look right with having 2 single car garage doors.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Function over form man. I'm thinking about building my own shed (with wood floor) behind my garage to store my gasoline cans, mower, yard tools, etc and that will free up a lot of space in my rather small garage.
A car port can look nice if it's spiffed up a bit. Be creative and show us some pics. :-) |

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Yea, the only problem with a car port it it blocks my access to that side of the yard, which is where i park my trailers, and normally my rat. My lot and house are not perfectly parallel. I have been thinking about adding another shed in the back corner for the same reason, clear out that garage! and also run power to it, move my compressor out there and some of my bench power tools ect.. But it all takes money

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
I built a shed in my back yard it 9'X15' and it did not put much of a dent in freeing up space in my house and garage. my yard is small in the back yard about 28' deep and 45' long with the shed in one corner. next summer I will have to unload some things. to make room.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Finally I got the new A pillar installed for trial fit. It will take some massaging to get as close to perfection as possible. Now I can see the end of the tunnel. ROT be gone.

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Awesome! That repair would scare the lights out of me! I have never done any body work yet with the exception of trying to pop a dent, learning here as much as possible before i start on mine.. Keep up the great work!

Re: 71 4X4 Frame off Restoration
Finally sucess the Apillar is tack welded in place and looking good. My brother stopped by and helped me install the door, dash ans set up some strap clamps to do some final possisioning of the top part of the A pillar. I tack welded it and removed the clamps. All is fitting good. just have to weld off the rest and fit the parts for the floor. we did notice the inner part of the door is bent I have another door but it is rusted real bad on the bottom.
