Re: 48 5 Window air ride driver

The "stake pockets" are 16 gauge sheet matal formed in a brake with 1" flanges on both sides. The flanges on the rear ones are offset 1/2" on each side, to allow a 1" wider opening at the back, so the tailgate can close into the bed rather than flush to it. On each side a piece of 16 ga. was bent into a 90 and welded in to complete the tailgate pocket. Yesterday I finished the link assemblies and added hidden latches, I am hoping to drive this truck on Power Tour this June.

This picture shows the 1/2" X 2" deep "pocket" that the tailgate closes into. Please ignore the big kids pop!

Re: 48 5 Window air ride driver

I haven't updated the progerss on the truck for a while, the bed is almost done, I have to remove it to weld in the "compartment" that will hold the air tank, compressors, Big Red valve and battery. A hinged cover will be installed as will stainless bed strips. The left rear fender was beat to death so I got another from a seller in California. We rolled the truck out today and blew off some of the dust and shavings.

Re: 48 5 Window air ride driver

Now that looks kick ass.

I am soooooo drawn to these trucks when they are lowered like this. It (almost) makes me shelve my '46 project.

Good job so far.

Re: 48 5 Window air ride driver

I fianally finished the engine for the 48, it's a 97 Suburban Vortec 350 that I bought from a body shop 7 or 8 years ago. It showed 60,000 miles and appeared well taken care of, no sludge, strong crosshatch in the bores and the bearings that I checked were like new. I port matched the heads and blended the bowls. A local machine shop added LT-4 2.00" intake and 1.55" exhaust valves with a 3 angle valve job and LT-4 springs. I added a GM LT-4 "Hot" cam and 1.6:1 roller rockers with Cloyes timing set. The intake is a Chinese "Crosswind" copy of a RPM Air Gap, if I did it again I would have spent the extra money and purchased an Edelbrock, the offshore quality is poor. That said, I attacked the intake with a Sawzall and grinder and removed the extra lumps, bumps, weird mountings and "nitrous nozzle" bosses. I added a PCV valve (with baffle) in the valley so that I could use the Moon breathers without oiling the engine compartment. I then sent it to LO-KO Coatings for a ceramic coating, they do outstanding work. The valve covers are Ebay finned no hole centerbolt, with Moon breathers added, the carb ia a Holley 770 cfm Street Avenger with a Moon oval air cleaner. The engine is green same as the truck is going to be, I couldn't beleive that you can get dark green engine paint. Here are a couple of pictures, I hope to post more of the truck as work continues.

I finally got off my lazy ass and started working on the truck, the engine and trans. are mounted, brake pedal/master/booster is in, headers fit! It will be on Power Tour this year! Please ignore the blue oval.

Re: 48 5 Window air ride driver

lovin your truck man. that engine should be pretty stout. and yeah I could only imagine what that intake looks like in person. The airgap eddy from what I read is the best for most vortec applications, thats the route I'm goin. Can't wait to see this thing done. without that blue oval!!
