Really don't know what to tell you legal wise but I know that mistakes with the DMV happen here and there. A guy on this board once was confused because the DMV said his 87 truck was a van.

Dont stress so much. You have a smog legal CA truck. I have a 77, abandoned, because I do not want to deal with smog.

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

I used to be a licensed Vehicle Verifier for CA. Be sure that they check the frame for the VIN as well as not all of them do. As noted before, this vehicle may have had a cab swap. IF that is the case, it should still be titled as a 75....

Cool Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

Thanx for the piece of mind!

I had not looked yet at the frame but I plan too.

I really relied on the fact that all the basic Pink/Door Metal Tag/Year Model was correct.

I am interested in your idea that the cab could have possibly been swapped for a multitude of reasons; I'll give it some thought.

I've had so many cars in my life that these little things irk me.

My Camaros & Other Trucks are all legit.

I prefer this one to be perfect like my others but I can't control the past history and changes on this one!

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

My truck is in for a Title assignment.
Hoping it passes as a 1975.
If not, well, on to maybe selling it after fixing some stuff on it.

Question :
GM Truck 8.5 10-Bolt rear axles...
What is the spline count for these?
Is there an early & later issue on these where the axle spline count goes from 28 to 30?

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

I was going to change it to a 10-bolt due to better gear selection for gas mileage and a posi unit I have.

I have a brand new set of 10-Bolt axles here that I bought from a member years ago with the wider bearing areas and are 5 on 5.

I checked them and they are 28 splined.

Decided to use this with some 2.56 gears, my TH400, and save my GV for the 73 C/20.

DMV system was down Friday so I have to awit my Title news for Monday.

I'm working so much that I haven't had a chance to get back to the truck.

It's at my friends FAB shop having the whole front suspension rebuilt with new coils and drop spindles.

Cool Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

still awaiting the DMV results....

I have a couple of questions that I need help with.

1. Is a 1975 front sheet metal and interior different from say 1974 & 1973?
Are the seat belts in 1975 supposed to be shoulder strap or only lap belts?

2. Are the GM saddle gas tanks the same length on the longbed trucks compared with the SWB frame trucks?
I wish to install the driver's side saddle tank and use a floor lever valve tank switching and not use the electrical switches.

3. Where can you guys lead me for upgrading the stock A/C system to 134a?
Do I need to change the compressor?
What other parts in the system need to be changed in order to work correctly with 134a?

Where can I purchase Drop Leaf Springs on the west coast?
What correct drop should I get with the front using 2-1/2" drop spindles and new replacement stock BB coil springs?

Thanx for your help !

1. Body metal is the same 73-80. Interiors changed some but I believe will still fit. Bezels changed and dash pads changed but would still fit if used from the same year

2. I have/had 73,74 and 75 and all 3 had lap belts only. I believe that shoulder belts were special order

3. Tanks differ from long to short bed( I may be wrong) check out an LMC catalog

cant help with A/C questions or drop questions

I am curious on the compressor needed.
Is there upgrades for the Fridgidare unit or can I still use it inline with the stock system with 134a?

I had thought that I had read somewhere that the expansion valve needs to be changed to handle the 134a ....

What drier and condensor is usebale here...Stock? Aftermarket???

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

Hey all...
I got the truck registered.
It uses the VIN tag on the cab.
It came back just as it was from the prior owner as a 1975 Year.
So, as it ends up per DMV, it's a 1975!

So on I go with bringing it back to a 1975 model.
I will post a pic of it Monday.
Done alot already with it!
10-Bolt 2.56 gears in hand.
2-Series Posi; being rebuilt.
New Moser axels.
Rebuild the rear brakes.
Awaiting the front suspension to be completed before we attack the rear axle swap.
Purchased five 15 X 8 stock truck rallys.
Bought some NICE early headlight bezels.
Bought a '75 Chevy Grill.
Got all of the 454 engine brackets.
Located a stock 454 fan shroud and upper plate support.
Got some newer SS side mirrors; sorry but I like them better than the smaller correct square ones.
Picking up the 496 on Monday.

I have a busy week ahead.
There goes my Vacation to the Cactus League games....

Sounds like a good deal that CA is happy with keeping it a 75. No emission worries. Did you tell them that the vin shows it to be a 77?

Cool Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

On informing the DMV office :
No, I did not mention anything.
Actually, I decided to use a third party registration services company.
They are licensed to accept and represent people needing these services.
They told me that they don't actually go to the regular DMV office that the general public uses.
They go to an off site DMV office that specifically deals with them.
I assume they call for an appointment then bring in their stacks of Titles to be transferred and processed.

I asked afterward as I was picking up the registration paper ( its now in my name ) if I needed to have it smogged?
They said no. That if it did they would not have been allowed to complete it as I have it.
It's a 1975 they said and that I was good to go!

What a relief!
I stressed over it as I sold my other car before this paperwork was completed.
Happy days now!
And no worries on how I wish to assemble it!
:-)

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

all you need is a 134a kit. you'll will need to vacuum it down real good. make sure you only put 85% of the r12 pouonds. example... if it calls for 2lbs of r12, you will only need 1.7lbs of 134.

Is this 134a Kit available as a generic purchase at any A/C shop or where would I look for that?

I thought that someone in the past did this changeover.
I just couldnt find the thread...It could have been in a 72 and back app....

Re: 1975 Chevy SWB Fleetside

i done this last year on my 81. i bought the retrofit 134a kit at advance auto. which is nothing more than adapters and caps. mine had an orfice tube that ran along the chassis under the dryer. it was pretty simple. i did end up putting a compressor on mine but not because of the change over, my compressor was knocking. i bought the compressor at advance as well as the dryer. standard r12 stuff.
