power lock problems

I checked all my connections and they seem to be fine. I pulled the drivers lock switch out of the panel and unhooked the switch. I took a jumper wire and jumped power to both lock wire and unlock wire and they work fine lock and unlock. so am i safe to assume that i need new switches? or are they like new trucks if one side doesnt work both wont work?

they should be independent of each other if I remember correctly

If you're gentle, you can take the switches appart and clean the contacts inside. I use a hobby knife on mine...

ok i think my question that i was about to post got answered in this post but im not sure. dont mean to hi jack this thread but its related. i just put power locks and windows in my 85, i get power at all connectors so im guessing my switches work. i dont have my relay screwed into the pedal yet, its just hanging. could this be why none of my windows or locks work. oh they all work when power each one from the battery

ok, i needed to know so i went outside and and pressed the relay against the bracket while my wife moved the switches. they still didnt work, the relay would click when she moved the lock switch. some background info im using the harness out of an 84 and doors out of an 85. the motor and switch were were different in the 85 so i cut the connector from the 85 motor and spliced it to the 84 harness. would this cause a problem?

I would check to see if you have power at the door lock actuator when you operate the switch. I would pull off the door panel, reach in and disconnect the connector to the actuator, pull the connector out where you can see it, use a voltmeter and put the two probes on the connector tabs, operate the switch - do you show about 11 volts to the connector when the switch operates? If so, you have a bad actuator or the lock rod is hung up/rusted, etc. The rusted/hung up lock rod will eventually wear out the actuator motor - it will overheat trying to operate and burn out over time. Warning: I am not hip on auto electronics, but have learned some things the hard way. You can get a cheap voltmeter for less than $10 at places like Harbor Freight, if you don't have one. I have a nice collection of door lock and power window switches which I mistakenly replaced over the years because I did not check the obvious things first. Good Luck.
