jchav62: IMO, you did everything right on the yellow truck. That's one sharp truck!!!! I'd like to have one like it in my driveway.

Thanks!

Actually, my favorite thing is the body style, especially 60-63 with the wrap around windshield and the forward leaning a-pillars. The 64-66's are also very sexy in my opinion, just a little more 'modern' feel to them, where as the earlier models still have a taste of the 50's.

Re: Your favorite thing about a 60-66?

It was mentioned several times of how accessible the engine is and how much room there is under the hood. I LIKE THAT TOO!

The other thing I love about the truck is the cab and interior. I have a bench seat and a unmolested original dash. When I'm driving the truck it's almost as if I've climbed into a time machine. The look and feel of owning and driving the truck is what I like the most.

Re: Your favorite thing about a 60-66?

I was a kid during the golden age of model cars in the late 50’s - early 60’s. My first 3 in 1 kit was a 59 Impala convertible. When the Trophy Series Ford kits came along I built them all – 32 roadster and coupe, 40 coupe, 39/40 sedan, double T kit, Ala Kart, etc. In these instructions were drawings of all the other kits, including the first truck models I’d ever seen.

I’d had toy trucks, but these were the first 1/25 kits I’d ever seen. The Chevys looked wild and stylish with the roof line, jet pod hood and a box full of tacky customizing accessories. I never had one of the models, but thought they were really special like the boat kits.

The father of a friend that lived across the street bought a brand new long fleetside in 1962. Here's a rather grainy picture of it a few years later after he added a camper.

We thought the headlights looked goofy and commented he should have bought a short bed stepside. He agreed they were more popular, but thought the long bed looked better balanced, plus it was his work truck. By the late 60’s, these trucks were cheap enough young guys could afford them. With a 283 or 327, it was easy to slap in a 4 speed. It seemed like every cool truck had a set of slot mags and Mickey Thompsons. All it took was a Hurst shifter and a black naugahyde seat cover to create an instant hot rod. With no weight in the back a guy could burn rubber around every corner, and the farm type girls liked guys with trucks.

So in summary – the styling of the roof line and original hood, and the legacy of popularity when these were "late model" trucks.

I have to admit I like the Muscle look of my wife's 64,she says it's got a cute but! she might of picked that up from me. I also like the ease of working on it the parts are available and moderatly priced.

Re: Your favorite thing about a 60-66?

to me it is definitely the body design.most unique ever built.from the roof top to the hood and front fenders.i think that the 1960-66 trucks are the best looking design ever made and the 1988-98 short bed regular cab are a close second to me.i have owned 8 64-66 trucks over the years and first fell in love with them when my dad bought a 64 short fleet in the late 70's when i was a wee little lad.

I love the overall body design and the rugged all steel interior. I really like the two hump dash in the 60-63 models. I also like that the headlights are mounted super low to the ground when compared to most trucks.

Re: Your favorite thing about a 60-66?

I too love the hood and not having to reach over tall fenders like the newer trucks. I also think the roof line is the most interesting of all GM trucks. Most of all I love it because my Dad bought it for me back in '73 (when my son was born) so I had a second vehicle.

Re: Your favorite thing about a 60-66?

It's what I grew up on and learned to drive on from pops. I also tore another down and rebuilt it with some high school friends. I learned a lot about mechanical work and heartbreak while rebuilding it, only to have it stolen from the racetrack the night we got it running.
