Re: What did you get done? 06/02 Server out edition

Worked Friday and Saturday...
Mowed the lawn with the 62 wheel horse, chainsawed down a tree that was half dead, installed a 88 to 94 Chevy wheel to replace my Grant GT for a more stockish look and to gain my horn back. Traced my know parking lights to a fuse and replaced, reinstalled the plate lights, and drove my truck around for the first time in 2 years. Now I am just waiting to get it insured on the 10th.

On a side not engine hoist work great for pulling stumps!!

Re: What did you get done? 06/02 Server out edition

With the gas prices on the rise, I retuned my Edelbrock AFB for good gas mileage. It was way rich out of the box and I had been wasting a lot of gas. It seems to have much better throttle response since leaning it out.

I had 2 old Tecumseh motors motors laying around, a 2.5HP and a 3HP that I got for free. Neither had spark to begin with, but the 2.5HP motor had workable ignition parts and just needed the points cleaned, filed and set, and it had spark. Next step is to get some oil and gas in it and see if it will run. Gonna try to squeeze some extra power out of it and stick it on a go kart.

So I did some thinking and said well I will pull the intake, what the hell. So I did and I had 2 lifters not coming all the way up on the cam, so I pulled them and they did not look right.. So I pulled all of them and the cam too. Take a look at the pics I have heard about this but never seen it before.. I only have 5k if that on the motor.. This has been a sucky day, now I have to have it running in two weeks for a big show. Well Lunati here I come...
It's the oil. Today's oil doesn't have the wear additives as in the past. The fine folks at the EPA no longer allow the good wear additives. Roller cams/lifters get by OK, flat tappet cams/lifters won't survive. I talked to Comp Cams prior to getting mine together. I now use their oil supplement or the GM brand with every oil change.

I hate to say it but you need to take that motor all the way down. My cam and lifters in the "old" motor took out the mains, the metal had to go somewhere.

A good friend of mine is a nationally known engine builder, he confirmed the oil situation. BTW, some folks will tell you to use Shell Rotella T motor oil, it no longer has the wear additives either. Use the one of the Engine Oil Supplements I mentioned.

Re: What did you get done? 06/02 Server out edition

Went to an auction, picked up some 1" OSB and a window for the new "unscary" shed that will be used to store my lawnmower so the "scary" shed can hold the rest of my truck parts. Then started cleaning the garage trying to get my tractor parts organized so I can finish it and make room for my truck project. Pcked up a 700R4 for the project. Reracked and organized the spare steel pile.

Yanked out the 350 and swapped one of these in for gas mileage

Phila and S10, thanks guys, and harnalien, i personally dont know where my grille came from since it was on the truck when i bought it, but these its the style where only the front part of the billet isnt painted, so it gives it that really nice look. I think the newer ones are made by trenz, but dont take my word on that...

Re: What did you get done? 06/02 Server out edition

I bought a new Kinetik HC1800 battery to replace my existing battery under the hood. After my last show for ARC Audio I felt that I couldn't get enough play time with just the two HC600's and my conventional battery.

Eventually I will be adding another HC1800 under the hood and then redoing all the starter and ground cables.

With this new battery I will have nearly 2600CA of power and when I get the other HC1800, that number will climb to almost 4000CA.

Good Luck!

I ruined my cam in roughly 2k miles, wish I had known a $13.00 bottle of additive would have saved my motor. On the bright side, I ended up with a nice 383 the second time around!

I think this was how I wound up with a flat cam too. On the new motor, I'm using Valvoline VR-1 10-30 racing oil that I order from Napa. Says right on the bottle that it contains the ZDDP additives needed for flat tappet cams, and a bunch of other car guys around here recommended it. Been working so far.

Didn't know about the Rotella T though... I thought it still had the good stuff in it?

Thanks for the info on Valvoline. A Comp Cam rep told me at super chevy that the Rotella oil no longer has the additive.
