I also feel that you can pull a little more than the 32 that GM suggests....but on the street/pump fuel, I try not to go past 34 degrees. You may have to limit the can can to get where you want to be (just play a bit), & see what works the best? On the track, square decked , for minimum "quench" & rowdy cam/hot fuel....some guys may run 38 degrees longhorn

Eaton would be the unit to run.....3 series, 2.73- 3.42 gears, 4 series, 3.73 & deeper Longhorn

The eaton is rebuildable also, just did some clutches in mine.

Many thanks! I was thinking of going with the 3:42 gears & 700R4. It should pull harder off the line & still rev likely lower than it does now on the highway. Have you swapped in this tranny before? I believe I have to move the cross member & will need a new kick down cable - am I missing anything?? Any opinion on TCI transmissions? Thanks again !

Go easy on the lower rear gears!
You don't want extremely low rpm on the QE2 unless you're keeping up to traffic at 150kph.
I'd put a 700r4 in first with your stock gearing and then decide if you want to change gears.

Tci makes a nice trans, I've been abusing a tci street fighter th400 for years and no issues. 2200 stall converter for me with the blower.

Good advice! I believe it has 3:07 gears in it now, so I wouldn't think going 3:42's would be bad - considering you have an extra gear for overdrive.

Thanks Hollow! That looks like a radical engine! How much does it peek out of the hood? The only thing that concerned me about TCI was the short warranty. I could be out of warranty before I get the thing in !

I have a 4" cowl and its a TIGHT fit with the air cleaner. Get some 3.73 years and a 700r.

The 700R4 does not have a kickdown cable. That cable is the TV (throttle valve) cable, and if not connected to your carb correctly adjusted, you will burn up the trans in a very short time.

The 3.42 gears and a 700R4 will be a good combo if you don't have tall tires. A 3.73 gear is a good all around gear for an OD trans and about a 28-30" tall tire.

Thanks for the recommendation 68! I knew what you meant hollow .Thanks for the heads-up Fab! Are there any tips on adjusting it properly? The old kick down cables are so simple. I sure wouldn't want to screw up a new tranny!

Agree....my old truck runs a 3.42 gear/29" tire, & will cruze 105 mph & 31-3200 on the tach....freeway flya. Enough said....just imagine the 2nd trip around on the speedo @ 46-4700 in od ? longhorn

Sorry to keep harping on this guys, but I travked down my Vacuum Advance Stop Kit and plan to put it in tomorrow ( one last nice day them back to crap )! The plate has 4 positions: 5-8, 8-11,11-14& 14-17 degrees. Which would you recommend? Thanks!

After you set the total, I would ask where the initial reads? Add enough on the vacumn advance, to put you in the 20-24 degree spot @ idle speed (initial +can). Not carved in stone, some like a little more ...some a little less Longhorn

That's great - it'll get me in the ballpark & I'll take it for a run. Just nervous as I don't want to grenade it. I'll just stick with the recommended mechanical, hook up the vacuum & see what it's reading & how she behaves. Thanks again for the advice!

Set the total right on....that is critical in the mix ? The vac can, as I said is a load compensator....run all you can on the vac can, without spark rattle pulling a hill? You will need to play a bit, to get it all tuned in....just listen to what she wants & give it to her! Big fun.. Longhorn

Hey Longhorn. I put in the vacuum limiter & connected the vacuum advance, timed it & took her for a rip. It seemed to want some more advance as it wasn't very snappy, but when I got back we had a bit of a wind storm so I wasn't able to try it. I think I may have more of an issue as the brakes wouldn't lock up when I was driving & the revs came way up once I put it in park after the drive. Thinking maybe my booster is shot?! The might explain the hi revs after driving it hard. Our weather has been sketchy since but now I'm eager to diagnose the booster. On the plus side - it didn't run on when I shut her down - despite the high revs. You may be on to something with the vacuum advance as it did seem more drivable . I've got to wait for some more good weather & I'll try some more advance. Keep you posted! Thanks!

What is way up on the revs? You could have a booster issue, or did the choke not drop? At any rate, I would bet that you can go 34 on the total, with the fast burn heads? Shoot us the the TOTAL, then where does the initial read @ idle speed? Another ?....where is the total "all in"? I like around 2800, not carved in stone, but a good start...longhorn
