yeah, well i did need to do this, cause it was the right thing to do...
we'll see when the inspector comes... at least we'll know for sure what happens, or what is required in NC going forward

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

They can do anything they want. I agree. Make sure the cab and frame are not attached to anything of value.
There are other covert VIN #s on most rigs. I'm not sure where they are on the squares. Some cars have em stamped in the firewall, strut towers, or the radiator support.

Squares don't; just the one(s) on the frame. No additional VINs on the body (except for some Oshawa builds).

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

isn't the number on the engine part of the VIN, I did not catch what engine you have, but if the engine has a number that matches the frame then that should be enuff to register it I think, the cab you can call a replacement part sometimes the VIN plate gets lost during body work of the restoration process

As long as both vins come back clean and not stolen i don't think they will take your truck but who knows. It is the goverment they do some screwy things sometimes.

right, i'm not as worried about them being stolen, as i am the tampered VIN tag.

i'm sure it was totaled and they just a bunch of used parts and that VIN to make a complete vehicle.

i'm pulling it apart anyway for peace of mind

Y'all have it tough. That stuff doesn't matter in my part of NM. I also have a title clerk at the dealership I work for if it was a problem she'd just handle it for me. We don't have inspectors come out to the vehicle at all.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I thought california was the only place that worried about frame vin? why are you having to get it inspected? sounds fishy. my truck doesn't have the original frame. had to get a new one when I wrecked it. I don't see the issue. if the title matches the cab shouldn't be a problem. thats the actual vin tag. don't you have to pull the cab or bed to even see the frame vin? I'd tell them if they wanna see it they can take it apart.

Wish we had that option here in NC. Any antique/ classics coming from out of state require a visual inspection of frame and cab vin #'s.

In state transfer is no issue

right... however my VIN tag has been removed before, and put back on with the rivets, but with nuts jammed on the back of them, and what looks like JB weld

waiting for the DMV inspector to call me to set a time to come check it all out

hard days work...

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I hope hes more prudent than my inspector was. He stood me up the 1st two times we set appointments with no notification. After I made a call to the Euthaw DMV branch the 2nd time he no showed me I got a higher up that set the appointment and showed up himself. He was very knowledgeable and liked the old trucks. We probably talked for 45 min after his 5 min inspection.

I was just after title transfer from NC at the time, which is a little simpler than getting it registered for the road. They have to come back out to inspect to register it. He told me it didn't have to run, wasn't required to run, just had to have the appearance that it would and I'd go from a non-op title to operational.

This was with my newest 63.....which was just a frame, cab, partial front and partial rear end at the time.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I'm a salvage dealer in VA. I just picked up a 89 honda civic that was from NC. It had a new vin installed by NC DMV with matching title. It also has the original vin still on it. DMV may do that for you since to them you just have a pile of parts and not a complete truck.
Please let everyone know what happens because these title problems seem to come up a lot on older vehicles.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

I was told here it's officers choice, for a traffic stop, could be searched/seized/ with what's in it on the side of the road , if there was something funny/defaced with the vin.

Building from parts you would need to get a new vin (500$) and that's once stuff clears.
Frame or body , newest makes the year.
Dam that's a lotta work, hope it works in your favour.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

My buddy had a 76 K20 and put an 85 C10 cab on it in the mid 90's. Did his truck magically turn into an 85 with a higher book value? What about emissions? He was told to continue registering it as a 76. I'm sure every state is different.

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

any way to tell what year a cab is, if it has no VIN tag? are there numbers anywhere? or a specific design item that could identify the year?

inspector said he'll be here after lunch today... we'll see

Re: partial frame VIN/Cab VIN don't match question

alright here's the scoop from the NC DMV inspector...

cab VIN was valid, not stolen etc. 1986 long wheel base truck

frame 1985 short wheel base, and was stolen in 1987, legally recovered, then used to build my truck

he confiscated the VIN tag that was on it

they will issue 2 new VIN tags, with a NC issued VIN... (with the same number affixed in different spots... one in door jamb, and one under the hood)
one will be affixed underhood near the brake master cylinder
one will be affixed inside the drivers door jamb on the cab
NOT necessary to re-VIN the frame, but those numbers will be on the title record with the new VIN's to tie them all together in one vehicle

he said it was good that I had taken it back apart, if the cab or frame was in an active theft case, and the truck was assembled, they would have taken the whole thing.

however, since everything was apart, all they would have done was either take the cab or frame by itself if either was an active theft case

once they come back in 2 weeks with the VIN's and apply them, then I can go get it re-titled in my name, whilst i wait for the title to come back, it will have to be bonded as proof of ownership until title is in hand

once title is in hand with the new VIN's, that's it, all is ok, nothing to worry about anymore

so i'm glad i went through the correct procedures, if it would have been found out during a traffic stop, or whatever... it would have been impounded, legal fees, lawyer fees etc. etc. etc. you know the deal...

that's about it. inspector suggested getting stuff like this taken care of before you drop a ton of money into it, he's seen guys heartbroken when they tow their **** away, and it takes about a year for the judicial process to get it back

FWIW
