Could a teenager build this in one month?

There is three of us that rebuilt my truck together everyday for 4-6 hours a day, plenty of money to buy new parts and it still took us three months and my truck was a driver already. You are looking at least 8-10 months for us to do that job and done right with alot of experience.




I would love to go to that junkyard just to look around.

That truck looks like it was possibly a nice truck at one time. Wonder why it got stripped and scapped??

I was wondering the same thing but I have not talked to the guy about the truck very much. I am going to contact him again tomorrow and get a lot more information about it. I am hoping he has a title for it and it would be awsome if he knew why it was taken apart and knew where all the original parts were.

I'm sure the parts are sold to someone else building thier project. I would agree with several on the board, its a big project! might be better finding a driver to play with , while you work on this one and take your time and learn with it.

BTW,, where is this yard? what part of OK?

Maybe poke around for a more complete truck? Then you could play in the snow, then tear it down and rebuild it as you get funds/time/energy

I'm 17 and it took me a long time to build mine (over a year) and Im still building!

if you put your mind to it you can do any thing! but that truck needs some love and attention.... it also depends on how nice you want it. maybe if you worked all day on the weekends and from the second you get out of school until 10:30 at night and had all of the parts then maybe!

In regard to some posts regarding VIN swapping, I would highly recommend that everyone reading and responding to this thread please respect the rules of this site. I have already had to edit a couple posts regarding this.

I know the rules do not specifically condemn VIN swapping, but it is illegal. Please keep future posts free from suggesting any VIN swapping, title switching or abandoned title searching. I know these things CAN be done, but there is no place on this site for such practices.

My plans were to tear my running truck down, clean up the frame, paint the frame, do a few other mods, and put it back together in a month or so. It's six months later and I am still not there . Is the truck salvageable? Yes. To me it all depends on what you mean by a $deal. Considering the help you have and the parts available there I would pick the truck up for a couple hundred dollars or less. The grill looks like it's worth that much by itself.

Find a truck you can drive, and buy that one, the cost of just making that heap safe is going to be more. Is it a fun build, yes, but if you need a car in 30 days, that isn't it.

Looking at that frame it looks like a 73 and up frame. the cab and and grill are just sitting there. That would make a lot more work for you.

Just the fact that so many people say it can' t be done should be a good enough reason to try. Start a build thread and see what happens, if you aren't finished in a month at least you will be a month closer to finishing. Good luck and Godspeed!

I could probably do it myself in a month *IF* I had no job (oh the irony!) and I had access to all the parts/tools/etc that I would need.

I've torn a few of these trucks down to the bare frame before and have a general idea of all the parts needed to put one back together.

You'll be at a disadvantage in that you didn't take the truck apart and you don't know what's missing.

I'll be pulling for you, but I doubt it would happen. It looks like that yard has some great parts for you to use and that cab and frame look really nice... buy a cheap 4x4 beater for winter fun and build the truck up over the winter and hit the trails with it in the spring with all the fresh rain and mud

You mentioned there was no hole in the floor for the transfer case shifter. Is the tranny hump a part of the floor or bolted in. If the tranny hump is not bolted to the floor, that is not the cab that came with the truck. All 4x4's have the bolt in tranny hump. No big deal but that means the VIN on the cab will not match the vin on the frame which will cause you problems when you got to title the vehicle.

That is a very big undertaking.

A running motor from the junk yard maybe $200.

SM465 4 speed tranny and NP205 transfer case with adapter probably $250 to $300.

Front and rear driveshafts if new or rebuilt will run you at least $100 per shaft.

So many little things are missing or will need to be replaced. I'd venture to guess you will have more than $500 in little stuff, brakes, shifters, steering column, interior. like all rubber lines will need to be replaced. Will need new or good used tires too.

Do you have the funds for all of that? That and time are the deciding factor. Looks like a great project, but just be realistic about what it will take time and moneywise - AND GO FOR IT if you like a challenge!

I'd say do it, if you rebuild it in one month to half the truck it really is, it would still probably be more complete than alot of trucks around here But i'd suggest taking it slow; its better to do it right the first time than to have to redo it later.

Do you have a girlfriend?I ask because if you do get the truck and have it running in a month you will not have the same girlfriend or another either.Unless she helps and if she does you will be married.
It probably can be done but life usually gets in the way of what we want to do.I think it would make a great long term project especially with your dad.He probably has some things for you to learn that you don't know about yet.He may even surprise you with how smart he really is.

I don't think that the frame is even 67-72... shocks mounted on the outside of the frame in the rear? wrong cab mounts and wrong engine mounts....

That would be issues for a build...

It is in central Oklahoma by kingfisher. I am not sure if I want to give away the exact location yet. It is not really a junk yard that sells stuff or crushes cars it is more of a guys junk collection. He never really said what he does with the stuff besides buy it and park it. Thanks for all the encouragement/constructive criticism. I am going back there in a little bit to see if I can talk to the guy and get more pictures. I want to find out if the frame is really a 67-72 and get the vin number from the cab. I will also get exact prices on everything. Maybe I can buy the parts trucks also and share the rust free parts with you guys. And I do have the funds for a project like this. My saving account has been steadily growing for 17 years without me spending any of it. Can anyone tell me where the cab and frame vin numbers are located so I can take pictures of them?
