Re: bet 300 dollars in auto tech

After a few more posts including more of the information neccesary for a story, I am almost understanding this thread. As stated before, you can only learn with your trap shut and ears open. He may have an attitude or air of arrogance, but the instructor I guarantee knows information that you can learn.

I'm sure you're a lot smarter than your teacher. He is an ASE tech and has a Bachelor's degree from college.

Your posts do tend to obscure your intelligence with the poor grammar and punctuation though.

Remember, there is a reason you have two ears but only one mouth.

Re: bet 300 dollars in auto tech

I think there is something missing from the story. Why, out of the clear blue sky, would a teacher make a bet for that much without there being a lesson learned somewhere in it. As far as ASE. I passed my first test without ever studying. It came from experience. Vehicles today are far more complex than in 1990. I just retired my position as a Chevrolet technician for financial reasons and I can tell you you need to know every thing they taught in high school as well as technical school and even college. I now manage a parts department at a local (hate to say it outloud) Dogde, Chrysler, Jeep dealer. Nothing wrong with the job but this is another site.
Go buy him a nice test light and one for you, NOT FROM THE DOLLAR Store, and make him your friend. Then act like a sponge and absorb as much as you can. It is all relative. David

not if you tell him you are the student and he is the teacher. you are not sucking up but showing your gratitude. then sit down and learn. there is a large difference between sucking up and respect.

BTW, my theory of a test light; a wonderfull tool used to see if the bulb inside the test light works.

Re: bet 300 dollars in auto tech

Haha, tests lights are amusing. One time, i was tracing wires and the light wasnt working at all, and i changed grounds still didnt work, so I put it on the battery and worked, then went to where I was testing again and BAM! It all worked.

Haha, went back through that and edited so that my grammar was more "proper"

Re: bet 300 dollars in auto tech

I skipped the ASE test altogether and bought a jacket at a swap meet with the patch already on the arm for $10. Now all I have to do is work on answering to the name "Travis".

anywhere that sells a flashlight bulb and a piece of wire technically sells a unassembled test light and I bet family dollar has that stuff! Now, please sit down and learn while in class instead of pretending to know it all. I dislike the tech school grads that come to work n think they know it all and I have to fix all their screw ups.......

Re: bet 300 dollars in auto tech

Look, it's a system.

He is a teacher. You are the pupil. He may not be the brightest bulb in the house, but you can still learn from him. Your role in this system is to gather what nuggets of wisdom he has to offer.

Someday, you might just be far from home and something on your vehicle quit working. Being able to walk into any store and find the stuff to build a test light from scratch would be a handy thing to know. Like Josh said, a metal coat hanger and a Maglite bulb can do it if you're in a bind.

I'd bet you have been a pain in his behind anyway, so why don't you show him the respect to build him a nice test light from scratch as a gift since he puts up with you for very low pay. Show him that his teaching effort was not completely lost on you.

FWIW you can make a noid lite from a 194 bulb. I have used this in a pinch when I see a no-start in the grocery store lot.

Pay attention to what the crazy guy says and if he starts spitting bs then just throw it away but dont disrupt the class, and if he gives you useful advise then absorb it like a sponge. Let the idiots that dont know any better listen to him.
