307 engine, who is keeping ? and why

i got my drivers license in 1967...i hated the 307's then AND I STILL DO!!! LOL

i have a very good running one in a 68 truck now and its leaving for a lt1 next week,

Wow, look at that... there ARE some people out there with common sense! You do the same power mods to a 307 as a 350, etc and it'll gain a few ponies. Headers on a 307 sound as good as on larger displacement. And as stated somewhere, the mileage is every so microscopically better... Don't eff with it. Mine is about spent, so I'll price a rebuild vs. a generic rebuilt 350 once it's totally wasted.

Do us a favor: Post back in 10 years or so when the 307 is still cranking down the road.

"runs excellent" ... "low miles" ... Keeping it is a no brainer. That 307 will serve you well for many years. They are a solid runner, just not conducive to performance aspirations. Under square configuration, blah blah ... you can liven them up. A set of #14022601 305 heads with the 1.84 intakes would be a good start. Crack prone so have them magnafluxed. Add a Summit #K1102 cam/lifter kit and you're hopping along on pump gas. Though going the 350 route may be the smarter option. Whatever floats your boat.

My 68 orginally had a 307 and some one swapped in a 72 350 early in it's life I think. Now that 350 is tired and burning oil, so I am actually going to replace it with a 307!lol I bought the engine from a friend who was parting a mid 80's C20. It looks to have been rebuilt and came with an edelbrock intake, carb and headers. Not a bad deal for $300 and it ran fairly hard. At this point, I would rather spend my $$$$ on suspendsion and brakes instead of rebuilding the 350.

If the engine is original to the mid 80's C20 it will be a 305, not a 307.

I ran the #'s off the block and it came out as being a 71 307, which kinda supprised me that it was not a 350 being how strong it ran. If it was a 305,I probably would have not bought it.

Thanks for your input members, you all seem to have the same thoughts I have and helps me make my decision easier as to keep the orig 307 and run it till it wont run no more. it ran like a new one when I drove it home, i feel it will do great for me, my plans for that truck is restore it with a new original paint colors and scheme ,i have already purchased 5 bolt disc brake conversion,a new auto steering column, new 350 auto trans, new alum under bed gas tank, new alum radiator, new stainless 5 "round head mirrors ,been gathering lots of goodies ,iam in the process of building a larger garage this year then starting the teardown, until then I will drive in and enjoy it riding around with my soon to be 4 year old son, just like I did in my dads c10 truck when I was his age, lots of memories I have and cant wait to create some for my son to have and remember when he gets older too ....keeping the tradition going , chevy c10 s ,keeping families together forever ....

I had a 307 and 3 OTT in my '69 Chevelle that I beat the livin tar out of until the frame broke and I sent it to the crusher. My '71 GMC I drive now also has the 307 and 3 OTT. 87,000 miles on it and I love it. Like to put a newer 4 or 5sp in it, but....the 3 OTT keeps my wife out of the driver's seat
