Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

heater63,

I like it because it is very bright and it is rather small. It is basically stuck on the outside with two sided tape and I drilled one hole on the drivers side to pull the wires through. I like it.

Thanks Clyde, and all others.

Clyde, saw where your thinking about an aluminum tank. I just got a 20 gal from FuelCellGuy, www.aluminumfuelcell.com right down the road in Mineola. Very Pleased with it, although, a Dave Boyd group buy can be cheaper.

That looks very good! I love the fact that it looks very period specific. Much like the 60' Impala tail lights I'm using.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Heater,

My dad got a tank for his 1930 Chevy 2door sedan from the Fuel Cell guy, it worked perfectly too. Yea I know Boyds might be a little cheaper, I am waiting on a group buy to get one, he is in Florida I think. Probably in March or so. Saving my duckies!

Yes...access through dome light hole. I used an electricians snake to pull the hot brake wire.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Bob, one final question. I bought the Suburban third brake light and it has double sided tape all along the bottom, along with the two mounting holes.

Did you use the double sided tape or just the screws? I am "on the fence" as to if I want to use the tape.

Some of the tape they have now adays is so strong I am afraid I will destroy the plastic housing if I want to remove the light (for paint and bodywork)?

Really amazing how good it fits the contour of the cab back lip. Thanks for turning us on to the idea!

Here is mine, I took three moon gear knobs, drilled out the eye sockets and fitted 6 x led lights, then mounted them on a plate,

Looks great at night,

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Lakeroadster...I didn't use tape, seems that it would lose grip especially after getting wet. I used screws...
The light does fit well, almost made for these trucks.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

I wholeheartedly agree in regards to the "cool" factor.

From a safety factor though, the third brake light really needs to be as high as possible and be "overkill", dare I say obnoxiously bright. The suburuban light that is discussed above has (30) bright LED's.

Personally it was a tough call for me to put something on my truck that was purely for safety that wasn't period correct. But with all the folks that are texting, talking on the phone and generally paying attention to everything but driving I figure seat belts and a third brake light are pretty much "have to do it add ons" to our trucks.

I agree lake; third brakelight is the best idea and I'm surprised that it wasn't in use sooner by OEM.

I agree completely with the safety factor issue & really the only reason to add extra brake lights. I use LED turn & brake lights in the factory rear fender location. Despite using very bright LED's in the rear, I was still hit from behind.
The other driver told the police the tail lights on my POS truck did not work. The officer asked me to test my brake lights, saw the LED's and apologized but he did have to check. No damage to me or my truck, there was steam coming from the minivan & the grill was destroyed.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Installed the '94-'09 GM Suburban 3rd Brake Light today. I would like to thank Big Fenders for all is help.

In the event you are interested in doing this installation here is the data that was on the box:
15755976 Third Brake Lamp

GM 94-09
Escalade, S-Series, Blazer, Jimmy, Bravada, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL, Hummer
Installation was just as Big Fenders described. Here is a list of tasks:
  • (2) holes drilled for light mounting screws,
  • (1) hole drilled for routing the electrical wires,
  • Accessed wires from inside the cab via the dome light opening,
  • Fished wires from dome light opening toward drivers side, down cab and along channel that runs along bottom of door opening,
  • Yellow wire on the 3rd brake light was attached to the white wire from the brake light switch that is mounted under the steering column above the brake pedal,
  • Black wire on 3rd brake light was grounded to the cab.

Note: I did not remove the facing off of the double face tape that is supplied on the light. I want to be able to remove the light for paint at a later date.

I will post a bunch of photos here, again just so anyone that is thinking about this installation can see the final results.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Nice job lake; looks great! What size hole did you drill for the wiring? Seems like a tough place to seal the cab.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Thanks Bob for showing us the right direction and John for another great job of detailed instructions! John, were did you find the best value buy on these? Chevy dealer or internet/ebay?

Although roofingbloke gets accolades, being a practical guy, I'll be installing a Surburban light also.

Laker,

Light looks really good!

Here is a picture of mine. These are "period correct" in that they were installed in about 1967 by my dad. Maybe the first high mount brake lights ever.

The hole for the wiring is under the light. The light comes with a fairly large grommet and a plug, I simply cut those off to allow the wires to pass through a 5/16" drilled hole. Then used crimp style connectors in the cab, working through the dome light opening. Here is a drawing I made from the part.

Lots of places to get these, best price I found was on Ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=330512873145

It is a good quality OEM part.

Re: '63 Third Brake Light on Cab?

Nice instructions/pics John

I have had my light for a few weeks now and you have motivated me to get this installed this weekend.

I got mine from eBay for $48 shipped. Made in India, but looks pretty good.

Thanks for the link to this thread, Mark.
I want to figure out how to make the light flutter like they do on motorcycles to get the person's attention.
