Thanks for the kind words.....

Should be a fun build. The suspension brakes and wheels will hold me over for a while. I will tear into the motor and exhaust after that. (heads/cam/headers/exhaust/electric fans)

I want the truck to be pretty dialed and fun before I tear it down and do a frame up a couple years down the road. Before that happens I will need to sell a toy or two to generate the cash flow for paint/body.

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

Got a couple things done to the truck.

One of the major issues with the truck was the bed paint. Bed is in really good shape sheet metal wise but the yellow paint was peeling exposing the factory gold color. The truc also had alot of edge chips towards the top of the bed so I had the line-x guy wrap it over the esge a hair. It looks good but when I re paint the truck I will be filling the stake pockets and removing the liner till its under the rail.

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

About 3 weeks ago I also decided to change all the tranny and rear end fluids. Went with a synthetic blend in the SM465 and standard in the rear(No Locker).

I also cleaned up the diff cover and scraped some of the 40 years of muck off the housing.

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

No other real progress......

I was able to clean Yeller up a little more. I waxed it again with Meguiars Gold Class. I also cleaned up the motor some more. I was able to get most of the grease off the intake manifold and cleaned as good as I could.

Here are some pictures of the truck at the recent Brothers Truck Show. We had a great time and met up with several board members. The truck didnt win any awards (lol) but I had alot of positive comments from people that liked her. It was mostly from people that appreciate the stock looking trucks vs. the bagged and body dropped stuff. I didnt have the heart to tell them it only looks the way it does becuse I havent had enough time to dump it and find 20's

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

OK so i'm pushing forward...... I don't have time to wait for magazine editors/free parts..lol

I believe I have gathered all the parts needed and will dive into installing the new ECE 4.5/6 drop and there front disc brake conversion.

I purchased all new moog tie rods/ball joints and I have new urethane rear trailing arm bushings to tidy up teh whole package.

If everything goes according to plan I hope to have this completed by monday....

With that said time to start progect Drop and give me 4/6

I have been soaking the truck in penetrating oil since the day I brought her home but I know I will still have some issues.

I hope to have the panhard and springs out tonight.

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

OK......update

So I tore into the truck this weekend.

I pretty much was able to complete the rear drop by myself. Overall I would say its a pretty easy 4 out of 10 wrenches install.

All of the ECE parts fit perfect and the build quality was exceptional.

The hardest items were removing the factory upper shock mounts and replacing the trailing arm bushings.Using the directions in Nate's install I was easily able to remove the factory upper mounts. The rivets were a different story and I'm thinking a bigger hammer would have paid off....lol

The Arm busings weren't really that hard just awkward by yourself. Luckily my 17 y/o cousin Loren showed up sunday morning and made the last arm and spring install go really easy.

Here are some pics....

My little helper...haha

Here is the rear all buttoned up....

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

Now on to the front......lol

The front I would have to say is a solid 7 out of 10 wrenches. The suspension work isn't all that difficult and pretty basic. On the other hand everything front suspension related fought me from the word go.....

Spindles and drums fought.....

Tie rods fought....

Passenger upper shock mount really fought and lost.It will need to be replaced.....The thread was stripped and the nut just kept spinning. It didn't back out until I hit it with a gun and that all but destroyed the old threads(needs to be replaced)

Upper ball joints really suck to remove....Spent a bit of time grinding/prying and drilling to get them to let go...

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

Here is the old pile of parts......

All 4 shocks are blown and when compressed they don't rebound at all. I imagine it will ride alot better with the kyb's

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

So this is where things get dicey.....

Brakes....

I would give the brake upgrade a 12 out of 10 wrenches. I haven't had any issue with the ECE stuff. My problems are all due to the fact that I" am working on a 41 year old truck that has never once been apart. The nuts holding all the brake lines together did not want to let go. We spent countless hours in the engine bay and under the truck fussing with the lines.

We finally got everything apart but we unfortunatley rounded qite a few of the soft metal nuts. The wd40 and PB blaster/ torch weren't enough and we had to result in some angry get off power.

Needless to say I will be repairing a couple of the lines with new nuts and re flaring a side.

Booster is in and the break pedal was drilled per instructions for a new mounting/leverage point. M/C was bench bled and installed. Rear break lines are hooked up.(don't mind the dirty engine bay the pressure washer did a number on it...)

Re: Project "Old Yeller"

So this is where were at.....

Breaks suck......lol

Truck is probably 85% done. I hoped to have it all wrapped up but I didn't have as much help on the truck as I would have liked this weekend.

I still need to:

Bend and attach front brake down tubing.

Fix long crossmember tube that goes to passenger side.

Install all lines with new T at crossmember.

Install bearings/rotors

Bleed brakes

Here are a couple teaser shots until I can get it wrapped up in about 3 weeks....(busy next weekend)
