Re: How many members are VW guys

I've had a few. My fist one was a 72 lowered with bright red pant and a duel carb 1600 and Enkie 8 spokes next one was a 62 rag top did a pan off resto mod. had porch wheels 2 1/2 ' dropped spindles flawless white paint top to bottom then I did a 57 Ovel Euro spec convertible with semaphore turn signals. then the last one was a 56 ragtop With a 215 hp 2275 that did 12.3 in the quarter mile and was street legal and the black paint was just as shiny on the bottom of the car as it was on the top.

Re: How many members are VW guys

Every time I look at people's Bugs it makes me want another. I had my '56 from 71-82. I remember I'd say "This is the hot rod of the future" and they'd all laugh. With a blueprinted/balanced (counter balanced crank) 1915cc,close ratio gears in a '67 transaxle, and Hurst shifter that little bug had he get up & go!

Re: How many members are VW guys

I was a Beetle guy whan I was younger. I guess I'm still a VW guy since my DD is the 2005 Diesel bug. My coworker calls it a 'Bogus Beetle'.

2 1957 oval window bugs
1960 European with semaphores
1962 (made into a Baja)
1966 (swapped the pan to one of the 1957 bugs)
1971 1641CC dual Webers
2002 TDI
2005 TDI (currently my daily driver)

Re: How many members are VW guys

When I was a young bugger I found the oddest bug I ever saw,and bought it. I had the '56 and had had a '58 before that (when I was 13). This one was a '58 European model. It had a KPH speedo, semiphores and amber fender top turn signals. It also had that little parking light on the driver side cowl. The tail lights were the post-61s with amber turn signals. Here's the weirdest part...it had the typical 1st year larger back window,BUT,all the other windows were from the 57-back. And,so was the dash! That's not all. The rear deck lid was the 57-back type,it had the multi-colored Wolfsburg Crest on the hood, and since it had the early dash (with no fuel gauge) it had the early gas tank. In other words, this '58 had a 57-back body with a large window. It was definitely original. This was 1973 and it was all original with original paint. My dad messed with VWs and a friend he did it with had it. I bought it just because of the oddity. I went through it and painted it for a girlfriend to take off to college when I was 18. I've never seen or heard of another like it. Has anyone else?

May have been a rebuilt black market car, VW wouldn't have put one together with that combination of mismatched parts.

Re: How many members are VW guys

I am originally a VW guy. First car was a 69 and then a 64 bug before I got a truck. My first full time job was at a VW shop. Il still work at the same shop one day a week to help fund my truck build.

Do you have a picture of it, I have a buddy up here that is a VW guru, and if he can not figure it out, i doubt anyone could explain it... It almost sounds like someone put all these parts on, sounds like a Canadian Standard, but I think in 58 they changed to the bigger window.
My neice has a original 58 Beetle and it has a large window. 67 was to goofy year, but is now the sought after ones.

Agreed, also getting a split or an oval and grafting it in to the newer roofs.. When you see one done, they just look wrong

Re: How many members are VW guys

Here is what my "guy" responded.

I've heard this story a few times. There may have been a few factory cars that went through like this but I think these cars are just "updated" with the new rear window. We saw that on Splits, Ovals as well as other cars like the '63 Corvette go through this awful transformation.

Re: How many members are VW guys

Gollee, would you look at that pile of rear window frames?
The little car has been around for so many years now I'd hate to have to have the job to validate one. So many of them have been mix n matched through the years.
Not everybody's thing but I used to like the glass fenders with flairs and glass hoods that were available in the early 70's. Didn't care for the Mulholland style though.
JC Whitney and Sears used to sell a good bit of VW parts. A number of body kits were available back then.

If I ever do one. It'll be just like Dad's. 58 w/ a hopped up 69 engine.
Americans in the rear only. I'd probably get them all around.
