Strangest motor ?
I've seen (in a photo) a 426 hemi powered truck . Don't know what year but it was a 67-72 . I'm putting a Cummins 4bt in my 4x4 blazer conversion . Then I'll run it on vegetable oil .

Engine?
When I got my 68 out of a salvage yard it had a 326 Pontiac with a two speed automatic tranny. The 67 now has a 1994 LT1 corvette engine and a 4L60E. Kerry

409? 2.8???????? 6.2L Diesel is interesting. Saw a '90's era GMC, with a Ford engine in it. On the tailgate, was the lettering "Like a Rock, With a Ford Block!" There is no substitute for cubic inches. we're told, so the 472 and 500 Caddy engines certainly address that issue. 326 Poncho engines are good engines. Had one in a cheap-bodied '65 Tempsest 4-dr with no options except the heater, radio and 2-speed automatic.....and it ran very well. Buicks, from 67 and up, are good engines.
The 3-cylinder Detroit was an option in the '69 PT-30 series step vans, according to my Truck Data Book, dated April, '69. They were also the powerplant for the Gamma Goat that we used to have when I was in the Army Guard. They hooked up to an SM-465 4-speed tranny, but had a high-low transfer case to get the power to all 6 wheels, or just the two center ones. One of the oddest combos I have seen, wasn't in one of our trucks, but Ak Miller (of Ford fame) put a 217CID A-model flathead 4-cyl into a Pinto....with a turbo, full pressure lube, etc. Seems he even developed a kit for others to do the same. Backed it up with a 4-speed, I believe....(it's been a long time since I saw that article).

I've seen a 455 buick with turbo 400 in one,I think a deisel would be cool so long as it wasn't one of the 454 chevy block turds from the 80's.

I'm working on rebuilding a FWD caddy northstar to put in a 67-72 (working on finding the right truck too). Of course when its finished it won't be FWD anymore....

There's a surplus place somewhere that sells gamma goat engines mated to the SM465 for fairly cheap. You can get about any diesel that was used in military equipment from them.
As far as swaps... I have a friend with a '72 that he was thinking of putting a 345 IH into. The 307 that came in it was like a dog, but apparently it has a cracked block anyway, so it doesn't matter (and a spun rear main, both due to a severe overheating). As it is the truck is still sitting, like it has been for a number of years. Who knows if anything will ever be done with it. |
