Back from the mechanic

It's got heat, spark, fuel, lights, rubber, wheels. It goes, and it stops. Needs new rubber in the windows or you can enjoy the whistling. Still needs paint and to have the bumper straightened.

It's also got two darling passengers who some day will appreciate that Daddy got a column shift instead of a floor-mount.

Here are the pix.

If by MC you mean master cylinder, previous owner obtained it. If you mean the little lovely girl, she came by the grace of God.

Re: My Slap-my-hand-to-my-forehead 68 fixer-upper

Threw some baby moons onto the rig over the weekend, $50 from a local place (Hubcap World in Portland). They also had dog dishes, but I've wanted baby moons for ages.

I had a Pertronix ignition, but it went tango uniform. Warranty covered it, and the mechanic put in a HE ignition. Boy do I have spark! The rubber grommet around my horn is as dry as the Sahara, so I need a new ring. Otherwise my horn button comes off, or if the button is mashed on, causes the horn to blow at the wrong moments--last night, on a rural road near 2 farmhouses. "Mind if I wake your dogs, sir?"

Oh, yeah, the turn signal died, and the radiator began leaking. One switch and a soldering job later, and we're good.

Needs arms for the floor air vents, need to fix the seat lever adjustment, and . . . .

I've thought about adding a coolant recovery tank. Any thoughts?

Thanks, and here's a photo of what has taken way more money than the pickup ever did.

Myself, I would get the whole rear form a 71/72 or buy new shorter axles setup with 5-lug. I believe Early Classic sells them, but who else slips my brain at the moment.
We ended up re-machining the axle, installing 5 lugs, and moving forward. I've been driving it since then, just drove 500 miles for my Army weekend, and the thing runs like a champ. Getting 13.5-16 mpg, with 14.5 being average.

Next I'm looking at blasting the bed, putting in a line-x treatment, undercoating with Line-x and painting. Oh, and window rubber. Then maybe a radio.

Re: My Slap-my-hand-to-my-forehead 68 fixer-upper

Recent developments:

Good: Wax. It's a wonderful thing. Makes the rig look nice and shiny. Also tells me where are the dings, scratches, bubbles, dents, and other blemishes are. But at least it looks better for the neighbors. I'd send pix but. . . .

Bad: Oregon's mandatory, year-round 10% ethanol is clogging up my Quadrajet carb. We massaged the carb last November after a smelly hunting trip. Now the Qjet's passageways are clogged and not responding to the mechanic's efforts, let alone mine. So I'm going to match the Edelbrock headers with an E carb and electronic choke.

More bad: the money for the carb is coming from the money being set aside to bead blast the bed and do a Line-X.

Pics soon.

Nice to just be driving, and keeping to the smaller projects. Keep up the good work.

BTW - graduated Lakeridge in 85.

LOHS Class of 82. Dated 2 Pacer gals, one class of 81, another class of 82. Reminds me of that old joke about Republicans marrying Democrats. The Rs intend to marry Rs, but they want to have a little fun first. Moved back to the neighborhood after being gone for 21 years. I'm sure my neighbors wish I'd hide the truck as it's not my former BMW nor manufactured this century. On the other hand, I'm one of a few who takes care of his yard instead of having a service, so I use the truck to bring in rock, bricks, soil, etc. Couldn't do that in my Bimmer coupe.

Ask and ye shall receive. Jn 16:24, although I'm pretty sure this is not what our Lord had in mind.

Re: My Slap-my-hand-to-my-forehead 68 fixer-upper

You can see that I installed shoulder harnesses for the seatbelts. And the heater is now installed. Ain't nothing like heat or defrosted windows when you're elk hunting. And as of today, it has a new starter and Edelbrock carb.

Still need to blast the bed, but that's going to wait a bit (unless any of you need some legal work in Oregon/Washington).

And Harold/71 Super from this forum sent me a check-strap for the door, gratis, last Thanksgiving. It's installed finally.

This morning, I took the truck to ProBlasters on SE 82nd in Portland. Ryan Hansen is the new owner of the shop. I pick the car up Monday, then it's off to the Line-X shop. I'm also doing the Line-X undercoat. Photos will come when I get the rig back.

Then I should finish off the inside--arm rest, door panels, radio, floor mat, etc.

Or maybe a paint job.

Or . . . .

Smile Re: My Slap-my-hand-to-my-forehead 68 fixer-upper

I just picked up the rig from Ryan Hansen's Pro Blasters on SE 82nd in Portland. Great job at a great price. 3 hours of work, and I didn't have to remove and then remount the bed.

Took the rig over to the Milwaukie, Oregon Line-X during our dry, sunny weather. It was supposed to rain today all day, and I was worried about exposing the bare metal, but the Lord gave us a sunny moment. TYL. You think I would have remembered to take a photo. Well, I just called the shop and Austin, who has been spraying rigs for 6-7 years there, is going to take a photo for me. So you'll see before and after shots.

Re: My Slap-my-hand-to-my-forehead 68 fixer-upper

We're rebuilding the bottom of the tail gate with the pipe to the right in the photo. Jason from Line-X will cut out the cancer (you can lift it out with your fingers), drop in the pipe for rigidity, and weld on a skin of steel. I'll pick up the rig tomorrow.

Then it's rifle rack time and prep for hunting.

Oh, yeah!

I'm pleased at how it came out. I'll miss the paint, but not the rust.

Just spent the better part of the evening talking with Scott from Canby, buying his radio and sills, and comparing notes. We compared notes re blasting. And talked, and swapped laughs. A 10 minute purchased stretched into an hour plus.

'Twas a good night.
