Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

That is a sweet car. I had an 80 Camaro years ago. It was a T-Top car and it didn't like the 454 it had in it.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

Thanks for all the kind words. It has been a great project. I work on it about 3-4 hours a day. If I run into a problem I just walk away for a bit.
So when I get it done do I need to grow a mullet? Might be a little thin and gray!

An 80 model is Pre-Mullet. Mullets are for 3rd gen owners.

Nice work on it! And yeah, no mullet. You're just under by a few years.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

I had a 79 Camaro with a 305/4sp manual. Good mileage but not real responsive. Hated reverse on that trans as you had to lift the entire shifter handle to get into reverse. Sucked for trying to rock it back and forth when attempting to escape snow traps. Other then the shifting issue, it was a decent snow car after putting a couple hundred pounds in the trunk and making sure the gas tank was full. Traded it off after the list of need to dos got too long and I didn't have a shop at the time.

Couple of suggestions.
Those inside door handles are semi soft plastic and like ripping apart at the front screw. I used a strap of leather behind the handles to stop that.
That pure plastic dash where the radio sits makes it real easy for thieves. After opening the doors by prying on the glass to get a hand on the lock, they just rip the radio out of the dash. Might consider putting a gauge cluster in the radio spot and hiding the real sound system elsewhere.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

Thanks for the tips.
I'm going to run Auto Meter gauges in the stock bezel.
This car will never be left on the street. I've been looking at alarms that contact my phone if some one touches the car. Haven't bought anything yet.
Trying to keep the car as stock as possible with a few exceptions. Engine, brakes, wheels and gauge panel.
Rear end is going in tonight.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

I drive my 71 everywhere. It's too fun and gets awesome mileage so it's hard not to. I try to park it in an area that I can keep an eye on it if possible. Mine is ratty so hopefully that detours the thieves.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

Just a update. L92 is in for the last time. Dressed as a LS3. Waiting on the engine/trans harness so I can reinstall the headers and exhaust.
Couple of pics of the gauge panel. Autometer gauges. Custom Works gauge pane.

Re: New 1980 Camaro project.

Damn clean car. My brother is building a 71 with all Detroit speed subframe and suspension, full floating 9", and an LSA tr6060 combo. His was a similar find, got it off the second owner who picked it up from the original owner, an old lady that drove it to church on Sundays, 36k original miles zero rust.

ohh yea pay once cry once. He worked for a local hotrod builder before he changed to a maintenance job with stable pay and is actually a SEMA top 35 under 35 award winner. He's wanted to do one of these cars since he was in middle/early high school and was lucky enough to go with his boss/owner of the hot rod shop to look at this, his boss bought it, and while they were driving back and calling me to set up transport he handed the boss what he just paid plus a little and was like I'm taking this one. It's his dream build so he's like I might as well do it all the way the first time. There's no CF on it yet, but the renderings he did the chin splitter and maybe the bumperettes will be.

It's starting to look like a car again. Front sheet metal back on. Head light/signal bezels in. Grill in. Radiator hose hunting tomorrow at the local parts store.
Couple of pics.
