The seller passed on my offer to buy all 10 so I made an offer for just the 4 medium duty clusters. He has received many inquiries (wonder why?) and says he'll probably sell them on ebay one at a time. Last edited by 84 PUMPKIN; 12-24-2005 at 06:46 PM. |

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
Wow , 10 left ! I checked his completed listings and he is using the same picture for each listing . I would ask for pics of the actual one you will be getting since there are several different applications . I have about 5 or 6 of them and I know that they are not all the same year . I just hope everyone who buys one can get the right application. Frank

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
82 Silverado 4X
Looks like a nice cluster but I like the 84 Pumpkin deal better for our newer trucks. I didn't think they made a pickup cluster for the 81-87 in the newer Font. I would love a newer style tach cluster for my 85 Silverado. I will keep my eye out for one or more, you do the same, perhaps we can find some local to us and make them work. Good Post for the info. Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
I hope someone didnt just get shafted . He sold 10 at once . He only has 6 feedbacks and there are no pictures of all of the tachs . With any luck the guy will get the parts he has just bought . I do not know why he would bale out $500 short of what they are worth . He could have just listed 10 different auctions . Oh well ! N2Trux , I do have a couple of 77 tachs , one 80 , I think one 78 , and a couple that arent in that good of shape . I dont want to sell any right now except maybe the 80 tach since I do not have a any intention of owning one in the future . Frank

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
LILREDGMC
The newer style cluster would be sweet "but" I just spent most of the afternoon and all the evening working on the interior of my truck. It took quite a bit of energy and even more contortions of my 47 year old body to get to the connections under the dash. My truck has A/C so it's pretty tight to get to everything. All I have left to do now is punch a hole through the firewall for the gromet for the tach wire, then just plug it in and I'll be done. I've already tested the other gages in the cluster and all the lights work (even ones that didn't work before). So at this point unless something really bad happens I don't think I'll be changing clusters again. In any event I did get my new carpet in and reupolstered my seat along with installing the new cluster today so my interior is almost done. I'll post some pics when I finish up on Monday.

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
And to think i gave one of those away. I was going to use it in my 79 so i could mount an air tank from a kenworth under the frame and use the dash gauge to monitor tank pressure.
I do have a normal c/k tach cluster i was going to use in the chalet but the tach is inop. Still sitting on my shelf as i will have to send it to the tach guy i believe...on line buisness...i think he charges $150 to repair the tach. When we get done drilling this well i'll have to go my friends body shop which is also a semi bone yard...there is a c60 service truck there from a coal mine that has the medium duty tach cluster in it...think i need to nab that cluster for my 79 so i can go ahead and mount that air tank i have been sitting on. I'd like more info on retro fitting the c60 tach cluster into a c/k series. I figured i'd buy the matching helm wiring book fof the c60 and compare notes between the 79...but if you have all the info... Doug Wright

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
A question for the tach gurus:
I took out the complete tach wiring harness when I removed it from the Blazer. There is an in-line condenser that gets attached to the firewall by one screw right before the tach terminal connection on the distributor. What purpose does it serve?

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
They were available in our style trucks from 73 through 81 or 82 I think . I know that they were available through 1980 . N2TRUX , I may have misled somehow . All of my tachs are standard tachs and not the tach/fuel gauge combos out of the larger trucks . I have never looked for the tachs out of the larger trucks but I know where several yards are that have some of the trucks . I think I will look the next time I am in the area . Sorry ! Frank

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
Frank Maybe it was jsut wishful thinking on my part. The sad thing is Chris was going to hook me up a while back with some he wanted to get rid of. At the time I dind't realize what I was letting get away.
As I said, my 77 has a very nicely resored dash that a forum member built for me. I am very happy with it, but you know how it is. There's always that one thing that you don't have, and wish you did.... Here's mine- Last edited by N2TRUX; 12-27-2005 at 12:36 AM. |

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
Well the good news is that I got the cluster in. The bad news is the tach reads irratically. It shows my idle at 2,000 RPM and it red-lines the tach when I'm actually only at 1,500 RPM. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
The tach is for a 6 cylinder engine =/
Not sure what is involved with changing it from a 6 cylinder to an 8 cylinder though...

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
No, the Blazer I removed it from has a 350 and I checked the glove box info and that's what it came with.

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
I'd think it was a 6 banger tach too, but maybe not. Think how rare tachs are in these trucks. Then think of how few were actually built with sixes in them. Add to that the fact that 6 banger trucks were usually bargain basment base models that were lucky to get an AM radio let alone carpet. So finding a fully optioned top of the line truck with a 6 and full instrumentation is going to be like finding teeth on a chicken. I'm not saying they never built any like that, I'm just saying they are going to be even harder to come by than the regular V8 tachs.
The tach cluster I found was in a 78 K5, but the engine was gone. Got it home and hooked up the tach harness temporaraly and tested my tach. It read the same way. Irratic, almost double from what my tach/dwell meter read. Needle bounced all over the place. I instantly thought the same thing, I must have found the only truck in Colorado that came with a 6 and a tach. I put the cluster on the shelf and didn't think about it a while. The next time I was in the area where the junkyard was that I pulled the cluster out of I went back and checked the truck out better. I couldn't find any emission lables or even see the vin on the dash to tell if it had a V8 or not, but I did look a little closer at the wiring that was still there and the throttle cable. By what I found I felt the truck did have a V8 in it. That was just by where the wiring was for the coolent temp sender and distributator connections. Had it been a 6 the wiring for the distributator would have been almost 3 feet longer off of the firewall, unlike the V8's.... Also further inspection of the tach harness showed that when installed it was too short to reach the location of a 6 banger distributator. SO, did I have a 6 banger tach? I don't think so. Did I get one that was in a truck that had not moved in a couple of decades that sat in the elements for all that time? Yep. I'm sure I could send it to a speedometer shop to get fixed. I got lucky and found another truck in a different boneyard with a tach. I pulled it and tested it and after a few minutes with a bouncy needle it settled into an accurate reading at idle and stayed accurate when revved. Lets face it, the stock instrumentation leaves a little to be desired in the accuracy department, even more so when you yank them out of trucks that have not been running for a while. The best thing I can think of is to test them out before you go through the effort to install them. Then you can send out the cluster if you need to to get it refurbished. Then you will know it's right.

Re: Instrument Cluster Tach
I pulled my cluster out and ran it over to a buddies place. He's sort of an electronics wiz. After a very short while he said he found something not quite right and changed out something on the tach circuit board. When I put it back in, it worked perfect. So now I have a very nice looking and fully functional interior. It's the first time in 3 years of driving this truck that I can say everything actually works like it's supposed to.
