Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I have no idea what that distributor fits but it is not a small block chevy. Post a picture of the entire distributor. I think thats the answer to what happened.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I'm not near it to take another picture but I can guarantee it is for a small block chevy. Not sure what you're seeing that would say otherwise. It's a small cap HEI distributor meant for an 82 c10 that my buddy had. It came stock with an iron gear but I swapped it for a melonized steel gear from ACDelco part #10456413. My buddy didn't have the box anymore so I'm not sure what brand it is, so I swapped in a better module and MSD cap and rotor to be on the safe side. I'll try to have someone that is near it send me a picture to show you.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I have no earthly idea how I did that or how I never caught it this whole time. This is one of those moments that you hate putting it online and gotta tuck your tail between your legs lol but we all make really stupid mistakes when working on cars. If anyone here says they haven't done something stupider, they are either lying or never worked on a car. One of those mistakes you'll never make again. Thanks everyone

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
There is something wrong with that distributor gear...… just can not figure it out.... is it upside down ?
Added a pic of a SBC dizzy and see how the cam gear is.... Last edited by YoungPup1977; 11-10-2019 at 08:01 PM. |

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
It's covered in assembly lube and you're seeing the teeth that got damaged. Like I said, the gear is ACDelco 10456413. It's the right gear though.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
Swapped on backwards ? Most likely the dizzy never did set all the way down...the gear is backwards and will not mesh with the cam gear.
You indicated you had the old dizzy, does the gear on your old dizzy look like the dizzy you got from your buddy ? You can bump that starter all day long and it wont fall into place. Last edited by YoungPup1977; 11-10-2019 at 08:15 PM. |

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
Now that we know what went wrong, do you guys think that this lends itself more or less now to the cam being chewed up too bad to keep running it?

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I'd pull it and post up pics of it next. Youve gotten this far, so fix it right and don't just let this thread die. I say you gotta document the repairs too.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I believe you indicated you loosen the oil pan and tried to remove it but could not based on the clearance to the frame. How confident are you on resealing the pan gasket with the clearance issue. Most of the time the oil pan will be a leaker, no one needs a leaker.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
.
Hopefully you have a hoist/crane to lift the block a bit to get the pan fully off and make room to do the gasket cleaning/replacement. Now is a good time to find a camera and inspect your cam dist drive gear. Either that or pull it out. -klb

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I just dont like telling people to stick a screw driver down into the engine. If this process works for you and you always used a screw driver to align the oil pump. Great stuff
But its Bad enough the dizzy gear gets installed wrong Plus bumping the starter to destroy the dizzy gear and maybe the cam gear. Cant imagine what could happen if something got dropped into the intake. Geee now what ? |

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
It's pretty hard to lose a 16" screwdriver down the distributor hole.

Re: Need Advice! Do I Need a New Camshaft????
I have thought of taking an old distributor and grinding the teeth off the gear. You could just drop it in and turn the rotor where you want it. You could also use it to prime the oil pump.
I just don't pull the distributor enough to make it worth my wild so I use a screwdriver. |
