Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

I carefully re-read this post. If I understand correctly this is where you are right now:
1-you had a fuel issue but perhaps it is OK now.
2-the water pump leaks-(some or a lot?)
3-it had a spark plug wire that was loose so you are paying a shop to convert to HEI and change the plugs.
4-it leaks oil but not bad enough to quit

You are there and we are not, but not sure I would have gone this way. Anyway, there is a NAPA in Santa Rosa. Looks like any parts could be had overnight if ordered early enough in the day. I would go to NAPA and buy some spares and hit the road when the ignition work is done.
1-I would get some Wix 33002 fuel filters (these are 5/16, if you need 3/8 its 33003). These are the clear ones you can see through so you can see when they get dirty. I would install 1 on the suction side of the pump and it they get dirty fast another on the pressure side. Leave the one in the carb alone unless you just have to because they are sometimes hard to seal. That NAPA has them in stock as p/n 3002. Get some extra fuel line and clamps too.
2-Fuel pump is DFP MF0001 they can have tomorrow (assuming 307 or 350 engine)
3-water pump if needed is TWP 43106 and is in stock (again assuming 307 or 350)
4-Belts you mention getting all seem to be in stock but without knowing what accessories you have can't say for sure. (same for radiator hose application as far as engine, but can pickup tomorrow)

I would go visit them now with your list so you can get moving tomorrow.

Good luck!

PS-you can buy a complete HEI distributor from them for $131 and have tomorrow. p/n NNDST1845 (assuming 307, 350, or BB). I'm sure they have plugs and wires or can get them too if the other shop does not work out. Use 1976 350 Corvette for plug wires, use original plug p/n and regap them for HEI. You have to replace the wire from firewall to distributor, the original to the coil is a resistance wire and won't work.

This is where I was going.

Watch a few episodes of VGG. Derek buys hose clamps with big butterfly type screws that you can hand tighten. He puts a fuel filter inline with those clamps. A few spare fuel filters as you go along and it is a few minutes change on the side of the road to put in a new filter.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

As I told my son once, troubles just add to the adventure. My old truck had not ran in about 13 years and started leaking all over when I got it running. Valve covers, oil plan, and spin on filter conversion pieces. Mostly stopped now but have a nagging leak that will leave a drip or two after driving.

Watching this thread close to see the outcome. If it were me, I'd have skipped the HEI at this point and parking lot installed new points/plugs/wires. Buy a spare water pump, spare alternator, fuel filters hoses, clamps and I'd have made the next leg to shake it out some more.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Hi everyone...I had all the ignition parts replaced, wires were fried plugs burnt to larger gap, dist cap had carbon fouling all over, rotor was fairly fresh. Dont know how old the dist was but put in an HEI.

The truck runs 30_40 percent better, maybe not that much but is running smoother, stronger and no backfires out the ex pipe.

Bozos charged 450 plus 50 shipping=500 bucks. I went that route because I won't have to work on the engine in the cold and rain , in a parking lot, get stuck half way through because I don't have a Allen wrench for the points or something else I didn't think of.
That would have been one or more cab rides to the auto parts store.
So I just had Bozo get it done.

I am hoping the fuel tank has cleaned up enough for a lot of miles without problems but I did buy extra filters , clamps and fuel line oh a fuel pump also.

The water pump seal and rear main seal may have resealed themselves, maybe kinda like lapping a valve seat. I don't know but the oil puddle is down to the sise of a quarter after sitting all night. And no antifreeze on the ground. Just guessing??

I have made it to Oklahoma for the night. Have not logged the miles like want but I am not pushing the truck hard either, a lot of stops gathering parts, food, gas bathroom breaks. I am cruising around 62-63 taking it slooooow also.

I hope to get some normal miles behind me tomorrow.
Thanks everyone, hope your enjoying the Halloween road trip.
Danny

Going 62-63 mph sounds like traveling cross country back in the 70's after the 55mph limit was put into law. Every country mountie and highway patrolman was looking to make his quota. A hundred dollar ticket back them was worse than a $250 today. Your not going slow your traveling in vintage style.

I drive my truck 55 mph whether I'm towing, or not. That thing is a brick, and I have the time.

I was thinking the same thing! My trucks are at near 3k rpm at 60, that's plenty.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

I made it to Guymon ok wed night. Things seem to be going good.
Left Guymon around 10 am Thur morning.
I found a convenient detour (yippee) on 54 east. about 4 miles before Minneola the sputtering and dying started up again.
Changed carb filter along the highway, No help

I sputtered into Minneola with emergency flashers going and 15 mph.
I met some real kind people there, was offered a parking lot to work on the truck.
Decided to replace the tank filter under the cab ( third time I think) and bypass the aux tank valve and all the extra fuel line.
I met another kind fella who offered the use of a fuel line vice grip and disposable gloves.
Wow, there are some good people out there still.

The fuel line vice grip was on antique KD-145 MADE in USA.
I have to find and buy this tool, worked great. Would work on vacuum lines and whatever.

After having fun on the gravel and in the wind I finished up, test drove, was normal again. got on the road again.

Drove another 80 or so miles to Pratt Ks. Now it's 6:30 pm
Got a pulled pork sandwich and a room for the night.
Crashed at 8 pm

My route is, Pratt Ks, 54/400 to Wichita, 35/335 to Topeka Ks. 4 or 59 to St. Joseph mo.
36 to Cameron mo. Get on 35 north to 90 east them home.

I have no idea when I'll get there with all the unnecessary, very preventable, stupid, pull yer hair out, simple common sense upkeep, ulcer making. Work or maintenance that should have been done, probly years ago by the PO.
Not to mention all the frustration, time and MONEY.
I would have liked to enjoyed the trip and seen a few sights and go to a few places to stop and enjoy
Dust in the wind , I Am way passed being pissed off.
If I seen the engine rolling down the highway in my rearview mirror, I think I'd just take another sip of coffee and say, I wonder if those nice fellows are still around.

The next drastic fix is to cut the tank sock off as it may be restricting the fuel flow.
I don't want to do that unless I run out of options.
That is a good idea, thanks to who posted that, I don't remember who it was.

The money pitt road trip.
I hope you all are finding some humer in this money pit sh_t trip. I can't afford not to as that would not be good for anyone. //\\//\\//\\ Danny

Will update 10 miles down the road

I would not completely remove the sock. I might replace it and I might either cut off the pickup line or bend it up so it pulled fuel from higher in the tank. But completely removing it is probably not a good idea. Some Orielleys carry them as GM0514053.

What seems frustrating today will be the best story next week! Embrace the problems and enjoy the ride. If you are making 55-60 mph most of the time you are probably in good order. The LS swapped guys with modern transmissions are probably rocking the normal highway speeds these days but those of us still using the 50+ year old engines and drivetrains are probably 50-65 mph guys all day. I know I certainly am.

Thanks for including us on your rigorous money pit road trip. Keep your head up and just keep plugging away at it. You`re doing a great job with the truck and writing up this epic adventure. I know this is the complete opposite of what you had in mind with this truck and trip, but some day you`ll look back at this and just laauugh.

Looking forward to the next chapter.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Sounds like you are making good time under the circumstances. And it also looks like all your problems can be solved with a new tank. Win Win. I bought a 39 Chevy Master Sedan in Pratt Kansas once and took off across the Ozarks in my 07 GMC with a 4.8. I ended up buying it and renting a uhaul trailer, (man they are heavy), and coming home with fingers crossed. Truck ran fine, it just did not have the grunt needed for that trip. The roads in Kansas really were impressive and the people were great. Keep chugging. If you had a modern computer controlled truck on this trip, you would not have got off the 1st parking lot.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

I'd be surprised if the sock hasn't long since rotted away. The fact that changing the filter under the cab gets it running again says there isn't any restriction inside the tank. Just dirt.

>>and bypass the aux tank valve and all the extra fuel line.<<

You have the aux tanks? Which tank have you been using? The aux tanks won't have a sock, to my knowledge.

>>Changed carb filter along the highway, No help<<

You keep messing with that carb filter and get a leak there, your trip will be over.
You seem to be getting about 100 miles per under cab filter. For the next couple of filters, I'd change them ahead of a breakdown in a bad spot.

Re: Need fuel system or carb help stuck oin Santa Rosa nm

Thank you all again. I sure would like to meet all you guys, or gals on this web site but I gotta say though under different circumstances.

I will leave the carb filter alone, I have been lucky with no leaks t the carb, I bought 5 or 6 carb filters and nobody had the large gasket that seals that housing.

The truck has one auxiliary tank mounted in rear between the frame.
The PO never used it, in 18 years of ownership.

I will try fill ups at half tank. As someone posted that should help with all the bilge fuel on the bottom.

Thanks very much everyone.
Also thank you locdock for offering any help I may need.

Will catch up later, Danny

Sounds like a fun adventure. When I bought my 72, the sock on the pick up disintegrated. When I looked inside the tank I could see bits of the socks laying at the bottom. Good luck on the rest of your trip, I know it’s not what you planned. But like what others said, you’ll look back with fond memories. I know I would.
