Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

I think if the avalanche seats had been mounted further back.... But you would have had to notch the brackets to allow it to be farther back.

The front seats placed in second row are a nice fit overall

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

December 29th, I turned 35. For my birthday I told my wife I wanted to go with my buddies to the Junk yard. Its similar to a kid wanting to go to Chucky Cheese for me. So I grabbed a couple of pals we loaded in the Suburban and went. No road salt had been used yet, was the perfect day to get it out and drive it one last time in 2014.

This old sub had actually belonged to my buddy Josh in college. He helped me remove the trim that was left just below the windows, and the rear threshold chrome piece that mine is missing.

On the way out of the yard, I stopped to get a couple of pictures with the old relics at the entrance.

All and all was a great day, high in the low 40's by the time we left.

The next couple of day I was able to track down the guy who actually built it back in 2002-2003. Pretty nice guy, was glad to share what background he knew about it.

To date, I have the 950 Holley Commander and the 4L80E waiting to be installed this winter/spring. Just need the time to get to it! We have a baby due in mid March... so not sure how this is all going to shake out

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Congratulations on the coming new family member! What a great way for a car guy to spend a birthday.

We spent a vacation day last year in an old salvage yard too down in Florida.
Apologies for the diversion and looking forward to updates.

Thank you! and your right, it was a great way to spend the day. I think anytime you can walk a salvage yard with old iron you don't tend to worry about much, just looking for that little treasure or emblem you didnt' have before you got there.

The yard I frequent is west of me near Bushnell, IL if you are ever looking for a good yard to walk.

This is on my to do list. Currently they are just sitting there. I will update this thread when I do make a bracket though.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Started diving in this weekend. Pulled the hood

and removed the dash cluster, it had an issue... when the lights are on, left turn signal in use, the right indicator on the dash would blink.. so ya that needs repaired and found more remains of abandon mouse dwellings..

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Got the big block pulled out today. Didn't plan to pull the heads but was very junked up under the valve covers.

Engine bay is just a mess..... Needs a serious redo... More to come on that

Power washed most of the junk off, and flushed the coolant passages.

Had to set the new intake on ☺

Got a little excited when I saw the top of the piston! From the numbers it's a 9.8:1 engine!

The plan for now is new rings and bearings, lap the valves, new seals. Cam kit etc. Might as well while it's out!

Yeah that is pretty gunked up. It will run really nice with the TBI....or you could maybe throw an LS in it while you have it apart...

As you can tell by my Sig.... I'm a big LS fan. But I'm also getting tired old seeing one in everything lol. This time I thought keeping it old school with a new school twist! And I already ordered the MSD trans controller for the 4L80E 😆

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Got the 402 apart, found a few things that didn't make me to warm and fuzzy..

Cylinder 7 has a little issue. This explains the white milky junk that came out of the water passages... it had to be block sealer.

Also found that the flaking cam was slowly taking out my Number 2 and 3 rod bearings and third main bearing...

Rod number 3

The crank lived, it should polish out. The pistons and rings all looked great, very even wear on the top rings, nothing stood out as an issue. The thrust and anti thrust on the pistons are clean and had very little contact with the cyl walls. For a 43 year old engine, it was in great shape... besides the nasty casting flaw...

So I sent a mass text out to my Car Guy buds. I found a numbers matching 402... I got it home last night and on the stand. Pulled one head and its a stock bore and I can see cross hatch. Crossing my fingers this block works out.

It is funny.... I can almost feel the black hole of the LS world sucking me in.....

Yeah, those bearings don't look good. The engine on the stand sounds like a good one though!

SO.... I got the other 402 home. Its in great shape, but there are enough scuffs I would rather machine it than just hone and use.

So after nearly a week of back and forth and wearing my buddies out with options.... I went from ATK crate motor, to rebuild 402, to LS....

Well... LS won out, called my local yard just to see what they had. Well they had just got in an 02 Yukon Denali. I pulled the trigger last night on the engine, and as a bonus, I got all 3 rows of interior!!! in Two tone tan leather

I pick up the seats tonight, engine some time next week.

Re: 72 Suburban Making it mine

Decisions...decisions...good direction to go with the LS. Nice score on the seats. Did you get a 5.3? Hopefully it has the accessory drives. Our local yard trashes them for some reason.

Nice to see somebody else from around here! Which yard do you use for your LS stuff? Great work, it really makes me miss my 72 Burb I had in highschool.
