I'm going to watch and learn from you. Planning a 5.3L swap in my burb next year.

I'm wondering why Gooker said that you shouldn't run under 1/4 tank of fuel if using the stock tank with an inline pump.

It's because the lack of a baffle tray surrounding the pick-up tube will result in fuel running away from the pick-up in turns and under hard acceleration. That sucking of air will cause power loss, if not outright stalling, and the frequent air chugging will prematurely wear the pump.
The reason this becomes an issue with efi is that an efi pump runs wide open, delivering enough fuel for max power at all times. The excess during low power needs is directed back to the tank.

Hmmmm, good point. First I was thinking that you could just install a couple of new fittings for supply and return into the bottom of the tank. But that wouldn't necessarily solve the issue. Then I realized you could install a small accumulator upstream of the pump to keep a modest volume of fuel to buffer those extreme lateral-g moments.

A bottom sump is most effective, if shaped to limit starvation in corners. Simply plumbing to the bottom of the tank will only result in added risk of debris in the line s, without resolving the starvation.
An accumulator sounds like a good idea, but will actually fail. These pumps are made for pushing, not pulling. Any ingestion of air would lock the accumulator and inhibit fuel lift out of the tank. The air acts as an elastic element, causing fuel to surge and retreat with every pulse of the pump.

Scotty, you certainly have a good point. I have never opened up one of these high pressure pumps to see what type of pump is used. Are they positive displacement or centrifugal? Non positive displacement pumps will not tolerate air pockets and are not effective at pumping air. So i assume that this is what they are. However I believe that the accumulator would work fine so long as you locate it strategically to utilize the effects of gravity and hydrostatic pressure, and do a proper charging of the accumulator and air purge during install. I would mount the accumulator in the frame rail (lower than a stock in-cab tank) to ensure it stayed flooded. Unless of course you ran the tank completely empty...

I'm still at the part collecting stage for my 5.3 swap. Do you have a reccomendation on tank, pick up and in tank pump?

I went with Boyd Welding thru AZ pro performance... (Always... and only always ask for their sales guy Travis... no bull****-A+-prompt service and followup)

I have absolutely NO regrets on the Boyd Welding tank. one of my better 'spend a little more....get better quality'

The Boyd welding EFI tank comes with the Aeromotive Stealth 340 in-tank pump...... LOVE it... its in-tank.. and is super quiet. My fuel pressure guage hasn't moved off of 58 PSI.... win win and win.

While its a little more... you'll be hard pressed to find a Boyd tank owner thats 'less than impressed'

Have a look on RockAuto at the '87-'91 Blazer tanks. They come in 25 gal & 31 gal for various years. The dimensions are on the spec sheets linked to the part descriptions.
These have efi baffles installed, and cost under $100. The matching efi pick-up/sending unit will mount the pump in the tank, and cost about $80. I like the Spectra Premium brand for both.
Fuel-Pumps.net, or Tanks Inc., sell a 255 lph high pressure Walbro pump. It should be under $125, delivered, and uses the same install kit as the gm tbi pump that would be in these tanks.

Thanks 66LSx I originally planned on running a Boyd tank. I will wait and see if I can swing it on my budget.

Good information, thank you all. I have a Boyds tank in the orange truck and love it. I had it made to my specs and it turned out perfect. I'm wanting to build the next one on a budget and also as a learning experience so I plan on using a factory style tank if possible.

I just got a2004 Silverado donor 5.3l LM7/4l60e/m30 to swap out the 250 2sp pg. in my 66 C10 LB
Any helpful tips,info. would be greatly appreciated. Also headers are being installed. Any other engine mods,are in the future.
Was also wondering if the 04 fuel tank /pump can be used.
Would like to replace the split driveshaft as well.
I have the complete 04 crew cab Silverado.
