Re: Strangest engine swap?

Big Olds engines in these trucks have been done plenty of times over the years. If I remember right the 455 uses the same engine mounts as the big block Chevy in the trucks. Don't let the size fool you about it's mileage either. They were known to get pretty good highway mpg in the big cars and with high geared rearends. Torque machines.

Seen that one done a few times, a Toro-Flow has the same bell housing bolt pattern and motor mount location as the GMC V-6, so it's almost a bolt-in.

Read a story about a guy back in the day that had a new '67 GMC 2500 with a dealer-swap 478 Toro-Flow in it.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

Not a 67-72 but I saw a 67 Impala with a 90s V6. Strange to me atleast.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

For some reason I have a 350 from a '72 4x4 in my '71 RWD (ran the numbers). Long water pump and a vintage air system with the compressor on the drivers side adds to the confusion at the parts store. Stock was a 350/th350, power steering and brakes, and a/c but all my numbers need to come from the old parts and/or modify new stuff accordingly.

I got 16 MPG in my Buick wagon with the Olds 455 once on a highway trip. It wasn't a fun trip, though, because I had to keep my foot out of the accelerator to achieve that. I averaged 10 to 11. That was with a lower profile (but just as heavy) vehicle as compared to my Blazer running a 3.23 rear end.

Very classic and importantly....not very common (hence the unique/cool factor).

What is the 348 like for power and torque?...say compared to a 350?

All Good

Hi Coley, it's 280 HP at 4800 RPM, torque is 355 at 3200 RPM. 9.5/1 compression. STROKE IS 3.25, BORE IS 4.125, this is with the 3-2 bbls. I have it bored 30 over and a little more cam than stock specs so maybe closer to 300 HP. I've never pushed it passed 3500 RPM though, since it's just a daily driver and for looks. It's no racer by any means, it's all they had back in the late 50s early 60s before they came out with the real bbc. But I like to be different. LOL

This truck is just about perfect...the only problem is that its not mine.

Great build, stance and overall look.

...well that would undoubtedly outpace my fairly stock 350 I'm sure.
Regardless, there is always only so much power you can safely put down under most circumstances but I'm quite sure it has the ability to hustle off the line.
...and I definitely like the 'different' factor in that.

I think one of my favorite swaps would be to a 472 or 500 c.i Cadillac (in lieu of a 409) but with a 4 speed (newer series) automatic behind it....although that is currently not in this years budget forecast...lol.

All good
Coley

I used to run those 348s pretty hard, back in the day (I used to work for some Chevy dealers then), but I can understand keeping the revs down so that it doesn't break. That is one COOL looking setup! One dealership I worked at had a '32 Chevy coupe as a trade in that had 6 Stromberg 97s on it. Pretty damn cool, too.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

I would like to see a Mercedes V12 W140 six liter in my otherwise bone stock C10 - though any modifications that would prevent it from being put back to stock would be a deal killer - so it would have to be an all bolt-in conversion.

A person can find these motors in the right junkyard or auction because if they go bad no mere mortal can afford to fix them or even to buy all the little doodads to keep them smog certified in California - they were in lots of 1991 to 2002 Mercedes cars.. anything with the model number "600"

400 HP and not heavy with the all aluminum block.. and the sound of that V12!

Here is part of the wiki and a photo:

The Mercedes-Benz M120 engine is a V12 automobile piston engine family used in the 1990s and 2000s.

The M120 family is built in Stuttgart, Germany. It has an aluminum engine block lined with silicon/aluminum. The aluminum DOHC cylinder heads are 4 valves per cylinder designs. It uses SFI fuel injection and features forged steel connecting rods.

M120 S600 (1994), 290 kW (400PS)
This engine developed 394 - 408 PS and 420–428 ft·lbf of torque for the 6.0 L version. In 1992 only the M120 engine was offered in North America in 402 hp (300 kW) format and from 1991-92 408 PS In Europe. All other years 1993-1999 have the 394 PS (290 kW) version.

Applications:
1992-1999 600SEC/S600 Coupe/CL600
1991-1999 600SEL/S600
1992-2002 600SL/SL600

Re: Strangest engine swap?

Found this video to submit as evidence for the MBZ V12 (though I will admit they demonstrate a turbo version - the trucks would not have enuff traction back there so I think the turbo on a C10 is probably not required).

The title of the youtube is:

Mercedes S 600 V12 Biturbo 0-270km/h acceleration, and burnout || KO 860

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvVPkTfTDZQ

Redline is only 6000 to 6500 rpm which is surprising.. I would have guessed 7k to 8k RPM

There are a couple frame grabs I would have loved to post as jpg's in that video..

Re: Strangest engine swap?

While I can not call it the strangest engine swap , because it is a Motor and not a engine but I am at this point in time bidding on a 2015 Tesla Model S from a salvage yard . that I plan on transplanting the 600 HP duel motor S drivetrain in my 68 c10 in the near future .

Re: Strangest engine swap?

I've thought a lot about this swap as well and it will be my goal after I actually get an LS into my '70. At some point in a few years, I expect we will see electric motor/battery swaps being done regularly rather than internal combustion. If it keeps them on the road another generation, I'm all for it!

Re: Strangest engine swap?

An unusual but practical swap I have seen done a few times is the 6.2/6.5 diesel. Of course they are not the most powerful diesels out here, but they are cheap, plentiful (even still available brand new), and can deliver amazing fuel economy. They have the common Chevy bell housing bolt pattern, fit on big block motor mounts, can use the standard 67-72 heavy duty cross flow radiator, and will work fine with gas engine axle ratios. Not too heavy or noisy either.

Re: Strangest engine swap?

the olds 455 is an undersquare [stroke longer than bore diameter] which develops a lot of torque!

Buick and Pontiac 455 by contrast are both oversquare [stroke shorter than bore diameter]

I ran a couple of 455 olds in a 74 cutlass, the latter living briefly in a 71 chevelle..

455 olds are often found in boat applications and I've seen them in bucket roadsters..

I ran an overbored 455 pontiac in a 67 gto.. the goat would spank the cutlass for many more reasons than bore/stroke ratio

455 olds 74 cutlass

455 pontiac 67 gto

I knew guy who had a 421 SD from a 65 Catalina swapped into his 69 Blazer. I’ve seen several Pontiac swaps over the years but that’s the only real hipo LD seen.

I used to have a 1997 BMW 750iL with the big V12. That'd be a cool motor, but I bet the crossmember is a problem on any of these.
