Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.

I put a 454 in my '72 Jimmy and had to do some work to the firewall on the drivers side for valve cover clearance. I cut out some of the firewall moved it towards the drivers side and rewelded it.

I also moved the engine, tranny/transfer case forward 1" for HEI clearance, didn't really have to move the engine, but the HEI was to close for my preference.

Also had to trim the frame rails for header clearance.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.

I went big block in my 68 GMC about 20 years ago.
Used a .060 454 4bolt block, steel crank, micro oval port heads hogged out to use 2.19in stainless valves, Performer cam and intake, HEI. Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers.
Did not have any clearance issues as I moved it all forward 2.5 inches, used all factory 72 Big block pulleys and brackets, stock V8 crossmember and a V8 2WD fan shroud,

I also have been thinking about putting a 502 in my 67/72 mix but my question is did any of you have to add a leaf in front to support the additional wheight? Or did you just leave them alone?

Here is my swap.
427 bored .30 to 431 ci
Thorley = 304-Y
Moved drivetrain 7/8" forward for clearance.
Running what I believe is a oil pan out of a passanger car with stock crossmember. Som slight modifications to the firewall.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.

I'm confused about whats different between a 2WD and 4 WD when it comes to engine placement. There were BB's put in 2WD trucks.
Does the engine sit further back or higher in the engine bay in a 4WD then a 2WD?

Why the need to cut the firewall on a 4WD?

Yes, the motor in a 4wd is set further back. Probably partly for better weight transfer and partly to give a slightly longer front driveshaft to reduce it's angle.

Thanks Yukon. I was always puzzled why the modifications were necessary.

Bigger block (Cadillac!) in my former C now K40:

I used the DIY4X engine crossmember and made the engine saddles.

Squeezes in there:

Should be fun with the dual turbos...

'71 Blazer w/ 3" body lift and a 396 ('69 Chevelle). It has plenty of room, and I even put in a huge Mallory HEI with no clearance issues. The hood's straight now, by the way.

Can you shoot a couple pics of your firewall in the valve cover area?

What engine crossmember are you using and how is your oil pan clearance?

Good looking K5 btw.

Thanks guys!

Basically the only thing left to get is a fuel tank and fuel system.

I'm thinking a late model Blazer tank and a 8.1 Vortec fuel system set up.

I need baffles in the tank and a high pressure pump (40-70 PSI).

I am running Tuff Country's HD front springs that give you the extra leaf. Not sure if it was needed in reality - not like I'm gonna have a winch up there anytime soon.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.

so iam getting ready to install my 396 in my 4x4. and it looks like all the firewall bashing is around the clutch rod hole. iam using the stock cross member with poly mounts and would like to use the stock holes in the frame. will it fit?? i would like to see some other pics out there.

Hate to tell you this, but you just won't know until you put it in place. Some need no modifications to put in the stock sbc location, some do. I had interference on both sides using the stock sbc crossmember, new rubber motor mounts and the stock sbc engine location.
