I can not wait to get to this point! Looks awesome. I have two boys that walk by the truck and see what I'm up to, but don't want to actually work on it. Hopefully, they will at some point.

Yeah - his interest is pretty new. I tried to get him involved for years and he would play along but you can tell he wasn't really about it. He's definitely jumped in with both feet now though.

That's a great blue. It didn't look that dark in the can, but it looks good on the truck.

Looks really good! Is that the same color as Chevrolet medium blue?

Thank you both. It's not the same, this is a Toyota color called Cavalry Blue.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

On Friday, I was able to pull the truck out of the booth and see the color in the sunlight. It's a lot lighter now. We are happy with it.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We were able to spend about half the day today working on the front panel on the bed. What a complete pain. They had 1/8” thick plate welded on both sides and about 75 spot welds holding it in place. I bet it weighed over 100 lbs. We got it out of there though and the new one in place. Have the front half of the bed floor but still need to order the back half and the tubs.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

The boy was out of town last week so nothing got done on the truck in his absence. However, he is back at it today. They are blocking the cab hopefully for the last time. Also, the doors are close. Real close. Hopefully we will see blue on both this week.

I can only imagine how cool it would have been if my dad and grandad did for me what you and your dad are doing for him. Hats off to ya man. By the way, what is your sons name? I hope he gets signed up on the forum and we get to hear his point of view about all this.

Thank you for your kind words. He is a fortunate boy for sure. He seems to understand this which is what I am hoping for. The lesson here is if you work hard enough, there are definitely rewards. Anyway, his name is Jesse James. He's not much for this sort of thing but maybe that will all change at some point. I'm documenting the process so it's all here if he ever wants it.

Pretty cool update coming up soon. I am going to wait to say it until it's all confirmed though.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

I've said it once and I'll say it again, this is a lucky boy. His papa decided if were doing this, we might as well do it right. Anyway, this just happened.

It's an '08 4.8/4l60e combo with about 80k I picked up off ebay. Should be here in a week or two. It's going to screw up the time line but it will be worth it in the long run.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

A lot of guys probably hate to see anything but a SB/BB in these trucks, but I think they're awesome. They're definitely light years ahead of SB/BB in terms of technology and efficiency and there's such a huge aftermarket for them. What I like about the Gen IV setups is that there isn't a TAC module and the PCM is so much smaller than the Gen III's. And your block should be all aluminum for weight savings and better heat dissipation.

Who knows what we'll be putting in restorations in the future!

Thank you, 1971Stepside.

@MDPotter, For the last decade or so we have pretty much used LS based engines in everything. Makes life so much simpler in the long run. This will make for a great driving truck he can enjoy for years.

That's exciting! There's nothing like seeing a cab go from primer to base and clear.

Lol, yeah we're both fortunate. Unfortunately, we're moving at a snails pace now. New goal of next summer.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

We were able to get the radiator mounted. It's a cheaper one, from a place in Minnesota, so we will see how well it works. It looks pretty nice though. It did take a little fabrication to make it fit. Had to stretch the mounting brackets.

Who's the manufacturer? Looks like an LS swap radiator, does it have a trans cooler and a steam port?

I bought it through Auto City Classic, Inc. I don't really know if they manufacture or are a middle man. It's an LS Swap radiator with the transmission cooler and steam port.

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

I recently had a bed liner sprayed in a new truck and the company got overspray on my bumper. They took it right off with Brake Cleaner. This info does you no good now and I am sorry I didn't chime in sooner!

I appreciate the comment but don't think that would have worked. I tried chemical stripper specifically for bed liners and it wouldn't touch it. Probably due to how long it had been on the truck. Who knows though?

Re: Son's 68 c10 Short Bed

My son didn't have school last Thursday so he spent half the day down at the shop working on stripping the bed liner off the other bed side. Saturday, he was able to get it finished up. Glad that is over with.
