Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

For serpentine components, any 88-95 Chevy truck (V8 or V6) will work. Just pick a year, say 1992 C1500 with a 5.7L engine and use that for all the components. Water pump, alternator, power steering pump, idler pulleys, AC delete pulley, and A/C compressor if so equipped. The only hitch is the fitting on the PS pump, the new ones are metric, if you are using the original hose you need a fitting from an older pump and use that on the new pump.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

That is exactly what I have Mightymouse, I am running an electric fan that I fabbed up from a late 90's camaro into my factory shroud. I have the aluminum brackets there is also another style that is all metal, my dad is running it and it works just as well as. Any 4.3 V6 should work on a V8 with heads that have all 3 threaded holes on the front.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

Just found a delete pulley on eBay for $49 and free shipping, will grab a belt next. Am I correct in assuming that I can still run the original configuration fan and clutch? I really don't want to go electric and I have all new shroud, fan and clutch sitting on the shelf.

Original as in original to your truck, no.

Original as in serpentine components, yes.

No reason to go electric fans just because you have a serpentine system. Clutches and fans for these systems are plentiful at local pick-a-parts.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

Actually when I bought it it had an electric fan setup (complete with toggle switch on the dash). I would think that the water pump pulley clearance would be in direct correlation to whether it is a long or short water pump. If I understand correctly a long water pump measures 7" from the block to the pulley. If that is correct, then I have a short water pump for mine measures around 5" IIRC correctly.

My next step was to pull the motor but now I'm thinking that before I do anything else I should probably mock up the new core support, shroud, fan and clutch before I make any more decisions/changes.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

Your A/C delete pulley/bracket that you need is available brand new on Rockauto.com for $22.89. Seems a bit less expensive that the EBAY one even after adding a bit for shipping.

It is made by Dorman, and is listed under the Heat & Air conditioning category and is called an A/C Compressor Bypass Pulley, part number 34152.

My local Auto Zone sells the Dorman part for $32.99 and has them in stock.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

When you use the serpentine system with a reverse rotation water pump you must also use a reverse rotation fan to properly pull the air through the radiator if you don't use an electric fan.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

I'll take a closer look next time I'm at the shop but this one is a Delco and I swore I looked inside and only saw wire winding.

Yeah, the originals were made by Delco. That Powermaster copy from the Jegs site just happened to be one of the first pics I found to post for illustration purposes.

The fan (many of them actually have two) are deeper down inside than stator windings that are readily visible through the case openings.

Here is an exploded view:

And here is the CS130D rotor assembly (notice the fans on both the front & back of it)

I borrowed these pics from http://alternatorparts.com

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

Well now my curiosity is really peaked, never would have looked in from the back side. Sounds like my alternator may be just fine after all.

Re: Serpentine Belt or Standard Configuration?

What does the back of that A/C delete pulley look like? Does it use all three mounting points or only two? Hard to tell in the diagram & pics.

It has 2 holes and mounts horizontally in the condenser bracket.

I was just about to ask the question and found all the answers on this thread . This forum is invaluable when building a 1965 C10
