Make a plan, set a budget and move forward in ONE direction. Building something 'pretty radical' and 'supercharger later on' doesn't even belong in the same thought! A blower motor is going to be built with around 8.0 to 8.5:1 compression. It's the only way to keep it alive once boost comes up. A heavy hitter small block capable of putting one of these bricks in the 11's n/a is NOT going to happen with 8.1 You will be running a completely different combination of piston, cam, intake, valve spring, echaust, convertor, and gear between a n/a motor and a blown motor. So I again say... pick a HP target, pick a budget (and double it ) and THEN you can make some serious decisions.

I was playing around with the horsepower calculator on TCI's website and found this..... Assuming your vehicle weighs 4000 pounds you would theoretically run 11.56 with 500 HP. I do not know how accurate this is but it might give you some kind of idea on what kind of HP goal you want to set. You first need to set a realistic budget because this is most peoples limiting factor. 500 HP is not easy to get on a tight budget. Nitrous is the least expensive way to go, but you need to make sure you have a good foundation that will handle the nitrous. Like Marv said, Pick a plan and a budget and follow it. After you've done that, most of these guys on here would be glad to help you.

I am doing pretty much the same as you but i've already done all the research. 11 seconds is fast, REALLY FAST. almost too fast for the street. If you want something that is streetable and still hauls ass the 500HP mark is about the max. I've got a 4 bolt 350 block that im gonna build as follows....
355 CID forged crank h-beam rods 9.75:1-10:1 compression forged pistons pro comp aluminum 210cc heads 2.02 1.60 valves .600 lift springs Roller rockers edelbrock RPM intake 750 holley and either: lunati voodoo hyd. cam 233/241 dur .504/.525 lift or: comp thumpr hyd roller 243/257dur .533/.519 lift 150 shot nitrous the lunati will give me 460 hp and the comp will give me 530 hp according to my dyno program, which is pretty accurate. the only toss up is between the roller cam or flat tappet. i obviously get more power with the roller but it costs about 3 times as much. the 530 HP roller motor should put me into the 12's on the motor and maybe high 11's if i can get it to hook up and lighten in a little. if you built a 383 with the exact same setup you probably get high 11's easily with nitrous assuming your tranny is built right and you can get traction, and still remain fairly streetable. hope this helps |

I agree with the 383 stroker using a 350 block. If you use other blocks like the 400, you can go with bigger cubes and the same reliability. However, the best bang for your buck is going to be a 383.
As far as forged versus cast cranks & pistons, if you can afford forged then go for bad, slap on FI (forced induction) and run with 800+ hp. For the rest of us who don't have unlimited funds, cast cranks are great and will take abuse on the occasional 1/4 pass. However, if you plan on running boost later, then forged will keep you safe. If you want to run 87 octane, then 9.5 on aluminum heads is max. I run 10.6 compression on my aluminum heads, but I run premium. No pinging and it has mild street manners. Take a point of cc off for using iron heads. 450-480hp on a 383 with aluminum heads is what you can expect. 460-500 hp on a 400 with alum heads. Realize that stroker motors make their money on off-the-line torque...that's what our trucks need!

My pick would be the Air Flow Research 195's. If you dont go with those I would look for something with no more than 200cc runners. Dart and Trick Flow also make decent heads. But for the money nothing compares to the AFR's IMO....

100% agree - most people make big mistakes here with the 'bigger is better' on the heads and cam... I'd stay around 195 or 200cc on a 383 that's not an all out race motor. You want to find out how much cfm you'll need to hit your hp goal, and find a head with the smallest port volume that meets that number. meaning, sure you can find a cheap 210-220cc port head that flows well, but I'd be willing to bet that an AFR195 will flow just as much and still offer plenty of low end and midrange torque that the big ports won't have.

I built a 383 using a set of RHS Vortec heads, ported a GMPP Vortec TBI intake to accept a big Holley TBI, hydraulic roller,, and out it in my 94 4x4 TOW TRUCK. Trust me it ought to be illegal to mention RHS and AFR in the same post. Not even CLOSE to comparing. And besides,, AFR is will guarentee fow numbers (on a reputable bence) to be +/- 1% of advertised. Try to get that out of RHS!! I promise you you wont, and they wont!
Like shortbead is saying I'm not trying to badmouth RHS, they make a good head for what they are and for what they are intended for. But they pale in comparison to a AFR anything.
