Re: 4L80E conversion
The way the trans shifts really is fairly simple, electronically speaking anyway. 2 solenoids, powered by 12v, and just a combo of grounds to activate.
1st Gear: Sol A: GND. Sol B: No GND. 2nd Gear: Sol A: No GND. Sol B: No GND. 3rd Gear: Sol A: No GND. Sol B: GND. 4th Gear: Sol A: GND. Sol B: GND. You'd think it would be cheaper for someone out there to devise a raspberry pi circuit board or similar to get the "computer control" done on the cheap.

Re: 4L80E conversion
You would still want to control pressure. That requires more current than a arduino or raspberry pi can handle. Still, someone savvy enough could probably do it.

That's all the ones out there now are, little integrated microcontrollers. But someone has to figure out how to make it all work, produce the product, and that's the price point the market has set so far. If you could make one for $10 and sell it for $200 you might move a few copies, but I bet the support would be a nightmare.

Re: 4L80E conversion
there are several manual control boxes available for anywhere from $125 to $400. or just search the transmission section on yellowbullet for manual shift wiring and the actual manufacture of the boxes explains how to do the wiring at the pressure manifold and plug to make it manual shift for free while you are saving for a transmission controller

Re: 4L80E conversion
Has anyone used US Shift? They have everything you need to get started. They don’t address the speedo.

Re: 4L80E conversion
I got a US Shift for my 91 Suburban conversion. (which has an electronic speedo) Still in the process of installing. Just had the d-lines redone. The US shift does have an option for electronic speedo calibration which I'll be using since I did an axle and gear swap with larger tires. I try to remember to keep this updated as things progress in the next couple of weeks

Re: 4L80E conversion
has anyone put a 4L80E in a K10. I really want to get rid of my TH350.
Maybe someone knows of a thread that addresses the issues associated with the transfer case and the bigger transmission. Thanks |

I will eventually be putting a LQ4/4L80E in my 72 K2500. I got super lucky and found a 205 from a 80's square body that had a th400 that a friend of mine has had in his shop for decades. I plan on keeping the T-case in the stock location so I don't have to change drive shafts and let the engine/trans move forward a bit

Re: 4L80E conversion
Found this out yesterday while working on my conversion. The starter is different with the 4L80e.. The bell of the trans is not larger enough for the nose cone of the stock starter in the 91. Got a starter for a 95 which bolts up after you locate the proper length bolts which are shorter. Had to lengthen the shift rod from the column by about 2''. Had to lengthen the t-case shifter rod by the same. Working on the strut from the bellhousing to the t-case now. Still have the wiring to do. X-member was moved back 3-1/4 inches. Looks good so far though.
