Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
A. Good Prep(Sealer after body work), spray and finish with Two Stage(BC/CC), or maybe a good single stage using your own talent
B. Pay someone who knows what they are doing to complete above My point is, why go through all the time to HALF A** it and it doesn't last..........With the proper prep and know-how of the painter, and later care from the owner a good job is more than worth the cost because it will look great years down the road. Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
Forgot to mention, the POS Green '69 C-10 in my avatar right below my "Handle" was spray bombed by the previous owner.............Of-course the truck is too far gone for anything other than a farm beater, but I do want to mention, we took our hot water pressure washer to it at a low PSI the same as when we clean our other vehicles right after we got it and it blew half the green off on the driveway. Now when you rub the hood or other body parts, the surface is chalky and green will rub off on your hands........Yeah, doesn't matter on a POS like this, but I could imagine wanting to do that to a good truck.

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
Well, the thing that some ppl forget...
1 we don't all have 2500 bucks to spend in supplies alone 2 we don't all have the needed tools, or access to the tools to od it our selves 3 we don't all have the tallent... or even some of the tallent it takes 4 We're talking to a teen who probably has to buy his own gas, insurance, and is making most likely less than 6 bucks an hr part time. He probably has less money than some of us broke adults. While I agree that spray paint isn't the answer, not every one can have a Foose paint job. |

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
Longhorn, A-Men, except I didn't hear (see) anyone say anything about Foose or even an expensive solution but we see what we want, right? Now if I can use your soapbx for second The post about if you can't do it right (right is open to debate by whoever you ask, but on to the point) Spraycan is not going to work at all, I think we can all agree on that. MAACO, One Day, etc is cheap $300. Do your own prep cause a $5k piant job over glopped on bondo will look like crap and a $300 paint job over a very well done body prep will look amazing. I did about a week and a half of prep and had Maaco shoot the $300 paint job (was on sale for $145 by the way) and 8 years later it still looks great and I live in AZ with 115 degree days and sun that will roast small chickens alive. Moral of the story, prep save the $100 worth of rattle can money and pay MAACO or ONE DAY to put on a nice acrylic enamal and in 10 years after college and you have more $$$ then you can shoot for Foose.

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
Ive done quite a few laquer spray bomb paint jobs with great results but they were all on motorcycles or small panels on vehicles. Doing a complete vehicle would be SUPER expensive & a real pain in the a$$. Like others said, its almost impossible to keep each coat wet enough to hold the shine...

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
dont do the maaco paint job. you will have to strip it all off if you ever want to have it repainted later down the road. also you have to do all the prep. and if its not just right they just shoot over the top of everything. goodluck.

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
i spary painted my 69 swb with rustiloeum flat back enamel. took 8 cans, sereval sprayin's, and i had a really sore finger. took it to a car show the day after it was done and got 1st place form 67-up custom trucks. looks pretty good, just takes time. nobody belives me when i saw its spray paint. i've had it on since may and no peeling, just fading a little. but its a whole lot better than havin a truck that's 10 different color of bad and few different shades of bondo. chris.

Listen to these guys. They are not feeding you a line of crap. Don't paint your truck with a spray can. Use a roller. You will get much better results. I had a tool box that I needed painted. We had all the other cabinets sprayed Rustoleum red, but we missed one (it was a little different shade of red, so it somewhat blended). I took a small roller and used the paint right from the can. I did not thin it. I got the initiall bubbles and, truthfully, I was horrified by the immediate results. The next day, after the bubbles settled down and dried, I am not sure you could now tell which cabinet I rollered and which cabinets we sprayed. If you are dead set on spraying it, get a gallon of Rustoleum or a comparable brand, get a cheap compressor and gauge and spray it. It will be MUCH CHEAPER than buying all those cans of spray paint. Plus you are thinking of clear coating it. You just doubled your cost. Mike

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
I have an 87 Jimmy that i paid $100 for, and am doing all the panel replacements, sanding and Bondo myself.
I got a welder 4 years ago for a birthday , am teaching myself and only spent $140 on panels from GMC PAUL'S It will be my hunting/fishing vehicle and I dont really care how it looks. So, it is getting rattle cans of "Rustoleum Regal Red" after very panel is repaired. I dont care if This One gets Scratched! Hell that is probably the first thing that will happen when i get out in the woods. So, for another $3 - the Paint will look nice again! In the mean time, I am learning how to do body work(bumping dings out),welding (the right way) on sheet metal, and it fits my meager budget. Do what you can with what you got............................ |

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
there is a reason Wal Mart sells it's bomb cans for .94 cents each ... cause they aren't worth much more than that.
buy yourself some implement paint and go to town ... less money and it will look TONS better than the "ghetto camoflage" that's gonna come out of that bomb can |

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
4 Quarts of Rustoleum Regal Red, a $55 HVLP gun and the compressor I already had is what I am using on my truck. Working outside with the spraying, and using a roller and foam brush on body panels in my basement. It sucks not having a garage, but it just makes one more creative.
The cab pic is after 1 coat of spray and will probably do 3 total. The grill is about 8 coats with a roller and foam brush. All the paint was thinned considerably with low odor mineral spirits, the most thinning was for the roller paint. I think of it as being a utilitarian paint job. If I get a scratch or ding I can just roll on a few coats, wet sand and buff it out! Bob p.s. oops, forgot to add here is a link to my personal build thread that has some info on the painting in it: http://webpages.charter.net/bdonovan...ck_Update.html

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
jake i got your answer. just visit this guys site and see for your self. BTW my buddy did his off rad tryck with sray bomb and it looked okay but it was because it always got scratched and made tpugh up easy
check this out man -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- you could try a $50.00 Roller Paint Job Scroll Down to 69chargeryeehaa's Post. The Guy did his Charger fir $30.00 in Paint and $20.00 in materials. He used Tremclad by Rustoleum which is available in Canada but, not in the U.S., It's a hugely popular thread which is was extended into a whole new thread, Paint job on a budget!? CONTINUED... Some of the U.S. Guys didn't have good results with the Rustoleum we get here but, other have, from what I read the guys having the problem were using the wrong thinner. Other guys have been using a paint called "Brightside" and say it works great. Between both threads there are 70 pages of posts. I put together a little summary of doing the roller paint job here . I am going to give it a try on a fender or a door just to see how it works out because I am interested in it. I don't want to use Rustoleum though and I think being in Florida I need a UV resistant clear coat to keep it from fading. I am going try rollering on some Zerorust on a panel, door, or fender and try hitting it with U-Pol Clear #1 Clear Coat in a rattle can (That's what a Zerorust Rep recommended) and see what I get. __________________ 1979 C-10 Silverado w/ Olds 5.7L Diesel 1985 C-10 Custom Deluxe

Here is a test hood that I did with the rustoleum and a roller. With some better prep, I think you could get a real nice job.

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
I was gonna do exacly this until I found a local body shop class at the tech school so I'm doing that instead. Though I'm still curious to try this roller method, and hell I'm just liable to still do it on another project in the future.

I've seen that Charger before and was bottomline amazed about how good it came out. If I can get a roller job to look like that, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't need anything too fancy, just to make the truck look good. For the record, I don't think there's a Maaco in the state of Maine. Oh BTW, I don't have it quite as rough as Andy stated, but I will have to pay for gas, repairs, tires etc. Usually I make all the money I can over the summer. |

Not to flame, but I am so impressed that this time around this topic was either better recieved, or avoided by the more snooty members of the forum. I love knowing guys who will properly cut the budget, and not just half-a$$ it and call it good.

Too right man. I dont personally know but 2 members here but I would like to think that NONE of us would do something halfa$$ even if all we could afford was a rattle can.

Re: Crazy idea about painting my truck
That pic of the hood is still wet, but I'll try and get a picture of it the way it looks now. It sat outside in the weather for a month or so and has some bird droppings on it, so I'll clean it up and see how it looks now. Might be a couple days, but I tell you what, I'm going to do my whole truck this way. It isn't going to be a show truck, but I think it will look pretty good and you can't beat the price and ease at which you'll be able to do it yourself.
