Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Looks like rain until Wednesday or Thursday...
We really need the rain, but it's killing me right now! I'm in Northern CA. by Chico I'm building a 1955 GMC 4x4, which fits nicely in the shop, and out of the rain... I'll upload my photos, and post today: 1955 GMC deluxe cab short bed Dana 44 8 lug front axle 14 bolt FF rear 1/2 ton 4" skyjacker lift 700r4 w/ 205 transfer case |

Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Here are the photos of my 55 GMC 4X4 front leaf spring mounts.
The previous owner welded the stock spring mounts off a 1979 Chevy 1/2 ton truck to the 55' frame rails. He set the axle center line to far back (If he meassured it at all, and as a result, the tire was hitting the back of the fender, and had miles of clearance in front of the tire. I think my mounts look better After cutting the old mounts off with a plasma, I finished surface prep with a grinding wheel, and finally a 5" sander. Bumper nuts were welded to the inside of the chassis. I will be bolting the bumper brackets to the outside of the frame rails. Drilled out the bottom of the chassis in two places using a 3/4" drill bit, where the new mounts were welded. This aloud me to weld directly to the new mounts (Through the chassis holes), and as the whole filled in with the weld puddle, it penetrated the chassis (Outer edge of drilled holes), this gave the mounts additional holding strenght. The mounts were made of 1/4" wall, 4X4" box tubing... The rain has kept me from the crew cab, but not the 55' (It's in the shop)! |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Cool project! hopefully you aren't planning on using big turbos for the 6.2. It might not like to spool them at lower rpm's. Any info on what you're planning? It sounds pretty cool!

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Well, as far as the turbo's are concerned, I am going to run a two stage twin turbo setup. The first turbo will be a quick spool (Smaller Turbo) for low end power, and the second will be slightly larger, allowing for higher RPM power...
This setup is similar to a Toyota Supra twin turbo. After I have determined the proper turbo mapping for my 6.2, I'll post the results... Right now my focus is on building the chassis, but as soon as it is done, I'll be attacking the motor and drive train.... I'm thinking of running an NV4500 with a Hydraulic clutch... I haven't looked into adapters yet, but I'm hoping I can use my 205 transfer case... Anyone have any leads? |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
You can use a 29 spline dodge NP205 from a 1989-1993 dodge d250 and d350 with a getrag 5 speed. Then you can use a 29 spline mainshaft in the nv4500.

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Definately a 44. Someone probably took the 60 out years ago to build a rock crawler of some sort.

Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Yep, it's a 44... The previous owner sold the Dana 60....
Now, as far as a Dana 44 being a weak axle... Give me a break (Ha, ha). I have never seen a broken Dana 44 unless it was in a rock crawler... Any "Talented" person building a crawler would laugh at the idea of using a crew cab 1 ton truck... So, now the smart A#$'s are going to post photos of crew cab crawlers. Here is the equation: Light, low, equally distributed weight + short (But not to short) wheel base = Crawler Here is what I have: Extremely nose heavy + long wheel base = Christmas tree getter, and a "Pavement Princess". Yep, I said it! I'll leave my wheelin' up to my land cruiser, and the cruisin' up to my Chevy... So here are a few update photos: Installed front 8" skyjacker springs, and wheels... |

Re: Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
One other note:
I just bought a 2 wheel drive power steering box. This will be used to convert the factory push - pull style steering over to a cross over steering system. The splines on the 2wd steering box will allow the pitman arm to be install at 90 degrees from it's original position. The original pitman arm will not be used. |

Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
Little by little...
1. Pulled saddle tanks 2. Cut off unneeded cross-members / parts 3. Took some measurements and placed some tentative marks on chassis (Playing with different ideas) Next steps 1. Strip Chassis of rust and paint 2. Make final cut marks and measurements 3. Weld Chassis back together 4. Install new springs (6" skyjacker) 5. Set Pinion angle on rear axle, and weld on new spring perches 2 1/2" lift (No blocks) I hope to have the above completed by next weekend... Last edited by OYMC; 02-28-2010 at 01:38 AM. |

Custom 1987 GMC Crew Cab Short Bed
The frame is cut...
The stock short bed measurements were taken from the trailing edge of the rear bed mount bolt hole to the leading edge of the front bolt hole mount which came to 71 5/8". To keep the factory gap between the cab and the bed I decided to make my cut 1 1/2" behind the front bed mount bolt hole. Now remember, we are measuring from leading edge of bolt hole mount to trailing edge of bolt hole mount. It is always a good rule to measure from either a leading edge or trailing edge, but not from center. Many times bolt holes are not perfectly round from wear, or by design so find the edge of the bolt hole, measure back to a point of reference. The point of reference used should be relative in location for both chassis rail measurements. Make a scribe line that is equal in measure from the point of reference to the leading or trailing edge of bolt hole. *If I have lost you just refer to photo. Now to set up the rear mark.
From the trailing edge of the rear bed mount bolt hole on chassis I measured 71 5/8" forward on chassis, and made a temp mark. Because I decided to use the stock bed mount bolt hole on the chassis, I measured 1 1/2" back from my temp 71 5/8" mark. Remember to make a reference mark on the rear bed mount bolt hole on chassis to keep all measurements square to each other. |
