I still say it looks good enough to cruise it that way for a while. Who did the flat paint? Did you mould in the rear roll pan and other panels yourself as well?

yah the rear rollpan is welded in.. the front rollpan isnt.. i did the primer myself.

I got tired of trying to find somebody to spray the final paint on it.. i couldnt find anybody that would do it for anyless than $2000.. and i didnt want to pay that..

so i went and bought $400 in paint materials and i startrd to so it myself..

i bought PPG concept single stage black.. it lays really nice..

I got the grille and front rollpan painted today.. tommorrow hood and fenders.. and maybe doors

$2000 doesn't sound too bad compared to the quote I've heard some drop around here. Then again, I don't know what you wanted compared to them. I love that front rollpan too. Makes me contemplate going that route...(IF). It's looking like it's going to take on a clean, subtle street truck which is big time cool in my book.

im going for the clean street truck look..

im going to lower the front and back 2" more.. air ride may come later on.

$2000 isnt bad.. but theres no body work to do.. i cant see paying somebody $2000 to spray a truck.. and i have to supply materials almost $500 more..

if somebody worked on it everyday it wouldnt take more than a week or so to have it done..

i mean i took me 6 housrs today to take the entire front clip off of it sand all the parts inside and out, and paint the rollpan and grille..

and tommorow ill probably have the hood and fenders done. thats 1/3 the truck in two days..

does $2000 sound worth it now

LOL. Hey, it never sounds "worth it" to me. But I'm only thinking about the part you see on tv. You know, the guy mixing up some pretty colors and spraying a couple panels and Bam! Poof! Pow!...sprinkle of tv magic and Done! The gem colored whip growls along the ground and it passes the camera in a dramatic shot. Hahaha. Yeah, so that's why I think I need to learn to paint. So I know and can actually DO what it takes to disregard a $2000 quote. I mean, every build I look at, yours included, guys are breakin 'em down to parade rest, welding, patching, fabricating, shaving, blocking....blows my mind that so many folks know how to do this stuff in their back yard AND are interested enough to post it up and talk about it on the internet. I want to be one of those guys or at least to be able to do what you're doing. I'm not new to custom cars/trucks or forums or life but I for one reason or another never got that deep. I guess I'd label myself as an idea guy than a, "hey I'll fabricate that idea guy". More creative than hands on but I know I COULD do it if given the training. Dang...what a rant. lol. Anyway, I see what you're saying. Ever thought about buying some junk panels and learning to paint it yourself on those? It's what I might do once I get to that point.

Looks very cool, I like the look of the front roll pan. Do you know how it compares weight wise to the stock bumper? Is it lighter?

definitely lighter.. it might weigh ten pounds.. no more than that

well i worded that wrong, it is worth it to some people. some people cant paint and would rather pay somebody to so it for them..

i however can paint.. i hate it, but i can do it and have done it before. i just figured for that price, with the amount of work that is already done it jsut not worth it to me, and im just soing it myself..

by the way i got the fenders done today and got the hood sanded and ready to spray tommorow. fenders are still hanging and drying.. ill pull them out tommorow in the sun and get some pics and try to post them tommorow night.

and as far as learning man, just like you said find some old body panels and practice on those.. practice welding in patches, straighting dents, filling dents, sanding, primer the panel, then paint if you want, cut and buff the panel if you paint it..

you might be able to go to a small body shop around you and buy left over paint from them cheaper than buying new paint.. but just practice.. and you'll get good at it. it took me a few years to get decent at bodywork, but you have to start somewhere.. believe me i messed up a bunch of panels in bodyshop class learning, and the first time i painted a car it wasnt perfect but ive learned from all the mistakes ive made in the past and i get better everytime..

for $2500 dollars you could teach yourself how to paint which you have done, if you dont like what you have done you can sand it down block it and the 2nd go around youll be painting like a pro. from what i have learned i lay 3 coats of paint per the flash times then 4 coats of clear, by the third coat i have no more orange peel and it lays like a mirror but that is being right on time dead on as the instructions say on the can dont know if that has anything to do with it but my paint has came out both times like glass but it looks like you have done a great job yourself for your first time. people seem to forget that the painter has hands and fingers just like us the only thing holding us back from attempting something is or mind telling us we cant. i hope do it your selfers out there take your build as an inspiration because you cannot have as much pride in something that paid someone else to do.

I have about $500 dollars in the paint now i had to go buy buffing compound, polishing compound, buffing and polishing pads for the buffer..

and tommorow im going to have to go buy some glazing putty and primer. i found a couple spots on the doors that need a thin coat of glaze. its amazing what flat primer will hide until you block it, i found two or three spots the size of a quarter that need to be filled.. not deep at all, but they avoided my dectection the first time around.

but like you said i would rather do it myself and save the money, and if i make a mistake i can fix it and learn from it.

and i would rather say that ive done all the work myself

Ahhhh. Progress is a beautiful thing! Looks good. I was looking thru a recent magazine and thought, "hmmm...black...maybe my choice". There's a million different color combos that run thru my head though. I'm sure it'll change. Anyway...don't forget about us.

not really anything pic worthy... i got the engine running better.. i ran like poop because of a vacuum leak..

today i installed a new summit racing fuel filter, fuel gauge, a holley fuel pressure regulator, and i took of my headers and sanded them down so i could paint them with header paint..

becuase the paint that hedman puts on them flakes off the first time they get hot.. so i got VHT paint made just for headers, it has a very good review online in many different forums. so i got the primer sprayed on them today. tommorow ill get the flat black on the headers..

but as far as paint goes. its been way too cold her latley to paint.. i may do the doors later this week when it warms up and if i have time

im finishing body work on the wiper cowl and the tailgate, so maybe if i can get those done ill paint by the end of the week.
