Re: Progess Report

I am using the UC35. My experience about the quality and laydown of the paint has to do with the spray gun you are using and the amount of reducer you thin it with. Its always a challenge to get a slick paint job without running in all down the side of your truck. Wet sanding and buffing is the only way to really get a slick job. I have a Sata Jet 90 spray gun that really atomizes the paint (very little orange peel). This will help reduce how much work it takes to wet sand it. You are better off having to wet sand orange peel than to try and get a run out. If you really want it slick sand it with 500 grit after the clear then reclear one more time now you only have orange peel from 1 layer of paint (just the clear) and not the sealer, base coat and clear. Wet sand and buff.

Re: Progess Report

I was wondering if you were using House of Kolor. I'am a licenced painter but have not worked in a bodyshop for 12 years and paints have changed alot since I used to paint. I have a Sata NR2000 paint gun that laid down the old clear awsome but this new low voc clear that I tried does not even have reducer just the clear and activator. I think I will look into the HOK clear next time. When I went and talked to the paint rep he told me that these new clears are 1 coat clears and are high build. The paint rep guy also told me that Sata has a gun designed for these clears its a NR4000 but I dont want to spend a grand on a new gun for the odd paint job that I do. Does the HOK clear have activator and reducer? Thanks.

Re: Progess Report

Its been about 13 years since I painted anything also. I still have my old gun. Yes I am using HOK UC35 clear. Here is the mixing spec:
5. MIXING UC35 KOSMIC URETHANE KLEAR
(MIX ONLY WHEN READY TO SPRAY)
• 2 parts Kosmic Acrylic Urethane Klear
• 1 part KU150 Catalyst or KU151 Exempt Hi Temp Flo-Catalyst
• 1 part RU- Reducer

You can add extra reducer if you really want it to flow. I really think the old guns do a better job. They may waste a little more paint but we aren't running a production line.

Re: Progess Report

Just finished painting the fenders, hood, cowl, tail gate and rear hatch. One step closer to getting it painted. I decided to paint these parts 1st and wet sand and buff them before spraying the remainder of the body. This way when I pull the body back into the shop I won't have to pull it out again until I get it put back together. Everything went okay except a moth decdided to land on the cowl. I will have to sand it out and reclear the cowl.

Re: Progess Report

I met my personal deadline of having it painted by Labor Day. I know I still have lots to do but at least I'm about to start putting it back together and working in a clean environment. I wet sanded all the piece parts Saturday. Tomorrow I will wet sand the body and start the buffing process. Hopefully all will go well. I was able to sand it with 2000 grit so the buffing should be minimal. Thanks for all the compliments, it helps to keep a guy motivated when people appreciate your work.

Re: Progess Report

No they are the same color. I painted them when I did the door jambs. Looking back I wish I hadn't painted them at that time. Oh well every paint job seems to have it challenges. I did get it all sanded and buffed with the exception of the roof. It is sanded but not buffed. Hopefully I will buff it on Thursday. If the sun comes out I will roll it out and take some pictures outside. I must say its looking much better than it did a few weeks ago.

Finished buffing today and pulled it outside. It was overcast so the pics aren't that great.

Re: Progess Report

Started putting the dash back together. New heater core installed, started putting Dyanamat on the floor and firewall. Put the seats back in to drill the mounting holes before finishing the Dynamat and installing the carpet. I pulled it out in the sunshine to try and get some more pictures. Its hard to take pictures that show the metalics in the sun. Attached are few but they don't do it justice.

Thanks for the kudo's. I put the front fenders on today and worked on a few small things. Who knows I may have the hood on before the end of the week.

Re: Progess Report

I drilled all the holes to mount the seats then ran a hot wire and tested the 6 way power adjustments and air blatters. I pulled the seats back out and put sound deadner on the floors, side panels and ceilings. I also put it inside the doors. This should make the ride nice and quiet. My carpet came in today so I laid it in place to let it take shape.

Re: Progess Report

I have been working some of the little things, I rebuilt the A windows with all new rubber, installed the tail lights, side markers etc. Cleaned all the glass and removed the old window tinting. Went to see my parts man and purchased most everything I need to complete putting it back to together. Installed the mirrors. I decided to stick with the factory mirrors. I know they are not all that sporty but if I ever haul anything it will make a big difference and if they keep me from backing into something... priceless (LOL). Sorry about these pics being sideways. I took them with my phone.
