What a coincidence.... I got my license in '74 and got my first truck in October of '75.....a '63 long fleet

If I remember correctly, at that time gas was aroung .44 a gallon.

I got mine in the grand ol' year of 1989.
Gas was 0.75 a gallon at the "cheap station", about 0.85-0.90 a gallon at places like Shell etc. Sometimes we'd just put a 50 cents in and drive to a friend's house.

I drove the heck out of the cheap stuff too in a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with honeycomb wheels and the bird on the hood.

That was the good old days in Texas. I remember pitching a fit when it hit 1.09 a gallon and telling everyone that they needed to start chipping in for gas.

This whole thread makes me angry at the gov't for not allowing more refineries to be built.

Started driving legally in 1971 Had a 68 camaro 327 2sp. slushglide. Gas was about 38 cents. Was listening to Deep Purple on my 8 track.

Got my license in '96, learned to drive moms 350, 6 speed Formula Firebird, complained when mom bought premium for $1.51 at an Amoco. My first was a 1997 S10 4cyl 5 spd, and of course I bought the cheap stuff....$1.30 ish a gallon....and we complained then! LOL! The pics were when I finally got her done, and laid out....

Cool thread. I got my licsence in 87, and leaded regular was .89 a gallon. Used to cost 16 to 17 bucks to fill up my 71 Cutlass.

Here it is in about '92.

Got my license in '69. I actaully worked at a Gas Station and it was 35 Cents for Texaco Fire Chief and 39 Cents for Sky Chief.

But I remember some gas wars at some other stations and the cheapest I can remember was 28 Cents.

When my Dad started driving in 1938 he used to get 10 Gallons for $1.00.

He would tell me that back when I was pumping gas for 35 Cents.

i received mine in 76,and if i remember right it ran about .50-.60 a gallon,my 1st ride was a 1965 c-20,283 and a 3 speed.i do miss the full service stations with their bottle and blue towel in hand.thst was when a service station was friendly.

Yeah, that was me. Anyone who got $3 or more got their windshield cleaned, or anyone else who would just ask for it. The $3 mark worked good as when the pump was on low speed, you just about had enough time to get it cleaned and get back to the pump in time. We also checked under the hood at request and pumped air in the tires, all for free.

I still got one of those Dupont bottles from the '70's.

1987- I worked in building and grounds at the local Country Club and bought my first ride, a 1970 Chevy CST Custom Camper/20 (350 3spd Dana60 4.10).
Gas was .75-.80 cents for reg.
Mileage was measured in burnouts.
Those were good times.

Well, I got my licence way back in 2005. Gas was just about 1.80 at the local gas station in the small town i grew up in. I remember when gas eventually was about to go over 2 dollars and everybody was freaking out. There were cars lined up for miles at the gas station waiting to get the 1.99 gas before it went over 2. After I got home from filling my truck up. I had to go take each of my parents vehicles to fill them up!

Here is my 600 dollar beauty - 1974 GMC Custom. It may have been an old rusted farm truck but it ran like brand new. Only issue i had with it was the water pump went bad. other than that very great first truck for me!

I got my license in '91. My first vehicle was a 1986 Toyota 4x4 with a 3" body lift and 31" tires, 22r 4 banger with a 5 speed(I later added a 3" susp. lift and 33's). I remember gas being around .90 -$1.00 a gallon at the Arco in Henderson, NV. Back then I made $4.25 an hour working at McDonald's and I feel like I had more money then than I do now... It only took about $13 or so to top her off.

@ Taco Bell I would get two bean burritos and a drink for $2.11
@ McD's, a #1 value meal was $2.99

A twenty dollar bill was still a lot of money back then!

back in late '73 after the oil embargo was lifted i owned a '57 chevy 210, a '63 c10 & a '70 road runner. i was gassin' up th '57 one day & my grand daddy was gassin' up his pickup on the other side. he asked what kinda fuel mileage "that car" got. it had a hot 283, fenderwell headers, twin afb's, 30-30 cam, a 4 spd t10 & a 4.88 posi rear axle. i said it got about four mpg. he told me " boy you better do something with that car, gas is gonna be $.50 a gallon before long" i looked at the pump, it was about $.39 or so. i said "nah, ain't no way". so much for me being able to predict the future, a trend that sadly continues to this day.

I got my license in 1984 and was driving my dad's 68 Cadillac Eldorado with an Elcamino bed grafted in. 502 ci, front wheel drive pickup. It was pretty cool. I wish I had some pictures of it. Gas was $.80 to $.95.

I got my license in 96 and was driving a 62 Ford Falcon Futura. Car originally had a 170 ci I6 and a 3 on the column, I put in a carbed 302, 5 speed, and limited slip rear from a late 80's Mustang GT my buddy wrecked. Gas was around $1 per gallon, and $20 would fill the tank and leave me enough left over for food for an evening of cruising. Sorry, no pics though, all I have is some old paper pics stashed in an old photo album somewhere and no scanner.

Started driving in 86 (didn't actually get a license for a couple more years) and gas was around $0.85 a gallon. At that time it took a couple bucks to fill my 76 Honda CB450, you could go all week on that.

First car I paid for myself was 4 years later right before shipping out to Desert Storm I bought an 87 Firebird. Gas was still about the same maybe a few cents higher. I remember cigarettes on base were about a $1.00 a pack but on board ship (at sea) you could get marlboros for like $5.00 a carton and pay $3.00 for generics!

Now my Suburban will take a hundred dollar bill without even blinking and be looking for more

Got the license in 1986. First car was a 78 Chevy Malibu Classic 2 dr. Gas was around .89 and I put $5 in at a time. I don't think I ever topped it off. I have no idea on the gas mileage.

2 years later, I bought a 79 Mercury Capri with a 302 CID, C4 trans, and Centerline Cragars all the way around. Wrecked it 3 months later. This was a fun car... for a while.

Replaced it with a 72 Ford Ranger 1/2 ton pickup. It had a 390 BBF and a C6. 2 tone green paint. Nicknamed it the Snot Rocket. It was a fun truck even though it was a F@rd.

Went in the Air Force in 89 and my Stepdad sold all of them for me while I was in Germany.
