Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Small update, because we're mostly busy painting some trim and sorting stuff waiting for the DMV. but in the mean time we contacted the company who imported this truck back in 1996(!) to see if they still had any records..

no was the answer, but the guy said that when he's back in Holland (he roaming around Cali looking for cars) he's be able to help us out for $1000,-...
ehhh let's see what his plan is before forking over the money.
tbc!

Still no update on the DMV stuff, so busy ordering bits and pieces, painting and repairing the steering wheel.
We visited a small old-timer meeting in a former car museum, which is now converted to a conference center.

My favorits? the 50's Cab-over truck and the panel van...yes I like patina

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Got an update from the guy who originally imported this truck and he claims to have a solution for the DMV problem, so my pal will visit him the week before x-mas to see what how and who.

We haven't been sitting on our arses though, well...I have been working mostly on my c10 while Ferry (yes that's my pal's actual name) has done everything on the 3100. He concentrated on the bed wood, because he had a stack of tropical hardwood (bankirai or something like that) laying around for years.

so after measuring it was clear this would fit the bill excactly in thickness, all that had to be done was cut them to the correct lenth and width.
then make the groves with a wood router. to bad I didn't take any pictures of that, but here is the finished product (well...still have to sink the rings and then sand, sand, sand, laquer, sand, laquer etc etc

thanks, we're first mocking everything up, to see how everything fits together. then we disassemble, paint and the put it all together.

one of the problem's we found is that the aftermarket front bed panel sits about an inch to low. we can solve the bolts not lining up, but optically it's just a bit off.

Panel from Prins Trucks?
Let him measure an other one to see if this is a wrong piece.
Before you drill and weld something that's not nessesary....

We already figured it out by adjusting a few holes, so it fits nicely now.
we pulled it apart again, because the bedsides and fenders are going to need a hell of a lot TLC, but more about that later!
we have been finishing the doors. all painted and assembled. I'm amazed how easy these doors go in compared to my '69.

then the outer trim was put in place, this is such a #$!$%$ job...so easy to scratch the paint, which we did of course, but nothing that can be fixed.
in stead of screws we re-drilled the holes and used rivets to hold them in.

We tackled a other big hurdle, hood alignment!
we followed the incomprehensible description on Stovebolt, but managed to get the hood where we wanted. we had to ad a shim to the radiator support and loosened all the fender bolts. we will have to widen some hole in order to get everything buttoned up again, but this is where we are at the moment.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

thanks guys! Friday night we'll see if we can get it even tighter, if not it's coming off for paint.

in the meantime, I've opened a thread in the parts section, because we're looking for the center dash cover and glove box door.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Ferry did some amzing work on one of the hood corners, it was missing a piece due to rust, and he tig welded a small piece in, looks amazing!

we also completed the doors and found out that the damn aftermarket window regulators are off by an inch!

so the 2 choices we have is: buy new regulators, or make brake which will cause the window to stick out of the door in the rolled down position..any thoughts?

we then installed inside window fellt and screw it tight. still it sticks out a bit above the trim..is this normal?

put in the door panels, but we need the trim, 'cause they are bulging and that makes it look funny.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Time for an update: we have all the right title papers now, so as soon as the build is complete we'll head over to the DMV and get the title transfered to a dutch license.

Ferry got busy with painting the front bed panel, the tailgate and the hood

then we mounted the hood and emblems

then we mounted one of the running boards, which had already been painted by the PO.. but discovered it has a dent in it, so that'll require some work and probably a fresh paint job.

then we took out the bed sides and came to the conclusion they're in horrible shape, so that'll take weeks to get them straight..

2 weeks ago I went over to The Hague for a monthly meeting called :Saterday Night Cruise. I'ts a popular meeting with about 200 cars or more visiting, a band and beer. Lot's of nice cars, but just took some photo's of simular models as ours.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Yesterday afternoon I drove by the shop only to find Ferry doing a great deal of work on the bed. first he found this incredible nice piece of equipment:

and then turned his attention to the sheet metal that had come away from the bed stake pockets. it had been repaired in the past..and I mean really the past, because when sawing and grinding we struck gold!!

ok ok, not real gold..but a kind of brass? I had no idea people used that to 'weld', but any way we got it removed so we could line up the side with the pockets again and then spotwelded them in place.

so that's a major hurdle out of our way, and to quote a popular dutch saying:
"Good tools, do half the work"
which is so true, because try this in just a day without a spot welder..

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

I like the popular Dutch saying about tools too. I will take all the good tool help I can get.

Looked like the bed had been brazed on at one time. I seen that a lot on the last truck I did.

Nice repair with the spot welder.

Re: 1950 GMC 3100 "handmedown" project

Thanks Doug!,

here's 2 more pictures of the repairs, with our mates Challenger featured in the background

in the meantime we turned our attention to the bed wood, which ferry had already made to fit and sanded. now it was time to put a few layers of lacquer. unfortunately I fogot to take pictures at the first 3(!) layers, so this is layer 4

now only 4 layers to go!

*bump*

Soon I'll post the update with some really cool pictures..because we're almost done!! It's been a journey with leaking crankseals, waterpumps, master brake cylinders..but more about that later. We're nearing completion and only some small stuff to take care of.

here a sneak preview of how the bed looks like now.

we call it "JD-Brown"
