Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

I like the truck from Kentucky. The one-piece appearing tail light lenses are nice, but not what I'd do. To lose the indentation that locates the handle is okay, but leaving the CHEVROLET has to be done. The character line that is in line with the top of the tail lights is important to the overall appearance of the body.

If you like it, go for it.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

The silver and blue truck shown in the first picture is just down the road from me. I work with the guy that owns it and the shop that did the work, did a very good job of putting the tailgate together. I like it with the indention and also without. It depends on what you want for room inside for your hidden handle. Mine has the indention, but no handle on theoutside. I plan on an electric operating control for the tailgate. It is planned as a street cruiser, not a work truck.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

The ones gringoloco did look really clean. I also liked the first few 1loC10 posted that have shaved handles with no wording with the indention. I have seen many of the smooth tailgate covers that looked good too. I guess how the rear looks with the mods has to go along with the look of the rest of the truck.

A car lot here in town had a 70 long bed all primed different colors, stock height with steel wheels and had a roll pan with a bowtie embossed total smooth tailgate cover.........truck look ok from the rear but didnt flow at all with the rest of the truck.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

I like the indentation too, but the smooth look just makes it seem more 'whole' somehow. The complete smooth skins are a little too plain for me, so I came up with the idea of leaving the lettering.

Here's some comparison shots with stock, shaved indent, shaved and moved letters, and taillights.

As you can see, there is a lot more to this besides just shaving the indent. To look 'right', the lettering would have to be moved up, centered between the trim line and bottom of the gate. This would also make the top of the letters parallel with the break between the brake/reverse lenses.

I Like it, especially withe the solid taillights and the lettering moved up and centered.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

i think shaving the indent looks good, personally, but i also like the way it looks with the indent just fine as well.

i think it looks better with the silver trim pieces in place. i don't like it without the CHEVROLET lettering. i also think it looks better with the fill-in vinyl stickering inside the letters, really makes em "pop". i prefer to see a shaved bumper, myself, but the cost of decent plating is so damned high that i'd probably never do it - and none of the manufacturers out there are bothering to sell shaved bumpers, even though - like shaved cowls - these would be a huge freaking seller. (hint hint, nod nod, nudge nudge to any manuf'ers here on the board)

i also think the stock tail light holes look better than shaving them - to me, the tail lights and headlights of a car are kind of like a "signature", especially with these trucks. it is very rare when you can take a tail light from another vehicle and make it look good on something else. the only two exceptions i've seen were the first person who put frenched caddy tail lights on a newer silverado/sierra, and some guy who put lincoln navigator tail lights on his truck - can't remember the make, just remember the concept.

Ya, I'd go for the bottom left version for sure. Looks really clean and with the letters still on there it stays away from the "slab" look. The light upgrade would be mandatory for this one

Get out of my brain...

There's gonna be a lot of work/bux going into this. I will take a perfectly good gate, and a perfectly good full skin and hack them to pieces... After cutting up perfectly good bedsides, I will have to pour my own lenses At least it's not a whole perfectly good truck I'm ruining... Oh, wait- it is.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

what i did, havent seen any like it.... maybe for a reason.
the dents are how the new lmc tailgate showed up at my door.
the emblem is a modified grill emblem off of a 65ish impalla, i need to get one that is cast, not stamped aluminum.
someone can feel free to photoshop the 67-68 chrome trim.

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

Bringing this one back to life...

Im looking to do a smooth with the big embossed lettering in the center of the gate... Problem with this is that I may have to have 3 tailgates to make it happen unless I can find a full skin with the big embossed lettering actually in the center of the gate... has anyone seen a skin like that?

Re: Opinions on this tailgate treatment...

I'd cut the lettering from the gate, then graft it into the full skin. This way you only need one gate plus skin
