Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
Thanks for all the comments guys! After looking at it yesterday, I think I would be sick if I parted it. I really want a big block for my short bed, and was all set for this truck to be a junker. The first night I went over, it was obvious you could not get in the truck...there was junk piled around both sides, making it impossible to open either door. It was parked all the way inside, with the front against the wall. The hood was slightly open, and there were charger wires running to the battery. The charger had an extension cord running through the bathroom window about 50 feet away. It looked like it had been there 6 years, not 6 months as the owner stated. I asked, "So how do you get in?" He said I would have to crawl through the rear slider! I said, "OK, give me a flashlight" I squeezed through into a cab full of junk piled on the seat and the floor. There was just enough room to sit in the driver's side. I tapped the gas, and turned the key. It groaned and acted tired, then turned over and fired up! I let it run and listened to the engine. It sounded very clean, healthy, and was definitely a big block! I noticed it had factory A/C, and felt power steering! I did notice it had no tilt no AM/FM no tach But I did notice the woodgrain door panels and glovebox. A Cheyenne Super! Cool, i shut it down and went to open the glovebox. When i leaned over a huge black widow spider moved from the passenger kick panel vent. I hate spiders...especially black widows. I flew out of that cab and tore through the rear window F-A-S-T! The owner and I laughed about it a bit, and i told him I would not set foot in it unless he got an exterminator. He was broke, So I told him I would go get some bug bombs at the market. I came back, set off 6 of them and told him I would be back the next night. I talked with him a bit about the truck. His dad bought it in 1982 from the original owner (his neighbor) for him to drive in high school. He thought it looked like an "old man truck" with the camper, 2-tone paint, and wood mouldings....so they were removed, and the truck was repainted, and the trim tab mounting holes were filled in!!!! At least it was painted the original ochre, and the white cab was kept. The only moulding left on was around the tailgate, tail light bezels, and the band. He also painted the grille insert black. He told me that his father kept it maintained the whole time, as had the original owner. He said every paper, record was kept by his dad, and they were in a folder inside the cab of the truck. I thought that was cool, and I wanted to buy it after hearing the engine run. I noticed that the amp gauge charged, and there was oil pressure, so I figured it would at least make it home! I really did not care what the truck looked like, but figured it couldnt be too bad. To say I have been surprised is an understatement. Here are some more pics.

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
Look closer...they are both blue/yellow. Hard to tell because they are old and weathered. They are original, 1972 was the first year of the blue/gold plates.

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
and more of the cab corners....there is NO rust anywhere on this truck.. I cannot find one single ding or sent in the sheetmetal. It has been repinted once, and you can see the original paint underneath in some spots where it is wearing. There is NO bondo at all. Amazing, even by Calif standards! The saddle tanks (dealer option) have been removed

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
I found the original build sheet tucked in behind the seat!! Wow, what a surprise! There was a huge folder sitting under the seat...in it I found ALL the original paper work, protecto-plate, manual, dealer invoice, another build sheet copy, and a ton of receipts going back to the early 70's. They are mostly from Chevy/GM dealers, so anytime a part was replaced, it was done right!

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
After I got done looking at the folder, and all the paperwork, I cleaned out the rest of the junk from under the seat. There were old shoes, clothes, rags, cardboard, lots of crap. The PO told me that his dad had more parts that were bought back in the day, and if I gave him a few days he would dig them out of the garage. I am supposed to call him back tomorrow and see what he found. Anything else he finds will go with the truck!
After I got all the junk out from under the seat, I found these stuffed in the back against the gas tank...an NOS windshield seal, and 2 NOS vent window seals!!! The boxes are trashed, and one of the triangles does not have a box, but it has the GM part number on it and still has some waxy stuff covering it. |

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
Wow what a deal. Two build sheets that's incredible. And always an unbelievable bonus when you get NOS GM pieces for nothing more!
I have it's sister that I bought last week but it is not a California rust free like yours. GREAT find, Mark

Re: My "Barn Find" C-20
I gotta tell you what a goldmine that could be. I sure wouldn't tear up this truck. Even during the hard time we're having right now that truck is valuable. Your best bet is to not do much to it at all and re-sell it once you get all the parts. I'd bet you could make enough to get exactly what you want in a half ton...something much easier to turn into the truck of your dreams.
