Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

Well finally all moved in and in the warm side of my new shed. 5 bays fills up fast :O I am hoping to do some plumbing this winter. Decided to ditch the cast manifolds as they would have had a weird upward jog i didnt want to deal with. for $120 these turbo headers look pretty darn good. I think I might wrap them as its not worth coating them since so cheap. looking to get 2.25" SS x-over and 3ish inlet aluminum. need to find a intercooler that will fit.

No idea why it rotates the pictures everytime

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

Nice to see an update. How well do the stock plug wires fit with those new headers?

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

I ended up ditching them headers and trying my hand at making a log manifold. The chrome ones were just too high and forward for my liking. have about 80 in sched 40 tube. I have confirmed i am not the best fabricator and rush things but they should work fine.

Initially started the build with elbows but compound angles kicked my ace and i went with straights. I 110v mig'd the joints against my better judgement. I will be TIG'ing the rest thats for sure. Also have some grinding to do on the through holes in the main tube. Advice to others would be get the damn hole saws. I didn't.

Other updates were air bags on all four corners and drive angle set with 2 piece shaft. I think in about -3 on the engine and the 14 bolt is up 6deg with my first shaft 5-6 deg down.

Where did this crossmember come from? "IFS" is an unfortunate brand name for a crossmember - makes searching kind of impossible

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

well I finally can see some progress after being stagnant. I went back and forth many times on which route to go. I didnt like the header I made. I ended up using the Chinese ones that should flow better, just have to add a nice strong brace. got the hot side almost finished. ignore the poor welds. rushing and shaking dont make them pretty.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

I have always wondered about those headers. They look really nice. Just FYI you can find a 90 degree bend like the one you make for pretty cheap on a few different websites.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

They have them that "short"? I wanted a very tight radius so it didn't hang the turbo out further than already is. I really couldn't find anything. oh well now when it rusts out I will have to prob redo it anyway.

The headers seem decent. flange holes are way off on two of them but will work now.

Little update. trying to assemble everything. everything seems to be off by just enough to piss ya right off.... oh well figure it out later.

cold side started.

turbo is so close to the wall i may have to make a sleeve in it or something hideous..

also you can kinda see the turbo bracket off the head i made.

holding it up there it appears I will have to shave the horizontal folded pieces that go to the rear of the truck on the oem bezel. I am hoping it is not much but the way things have gone.... haha not sure.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

the picture of the intercooler in the grill support panel just looks like it will be all in the way of the grill.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

Week off helped but should have focused more on truck . cold almost dont hot side darn near done. Need tube for WG, maybe another support for downpipe and then wrap it up. I am so sick of welding pie cuts, especially in this heat lately.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

Its been a while since I updated.

few things accomplished.

a-fuel sender closer
b-rad fan installed
c-computer mounted
d-rad hoses.
E- power steering

A) I did not like the connections being in the tank so I wanted a bulkhead but realized they are $32 dollars for something stupid. This is a pvc (pretty sure) one from menards for $2. I soaked it in gas for two days and its fine. It is also getting the fuel safe sealant gobbed into the top and bottom. otherwise im not worried about it... need a connector now.

B) I ended up buying a volvo fan off ebay becuase I wanted the mounting holes. I had a friend cut and bend the shroud i drew up out of aluminum. after massaging everything in I made some hard mount blocks to hold it all to the core support. lot of welding on the radiator itself. cross over came VERY close. dont like it but running it for now... I also need the two connectors to use the volvo relay that has it all in one so I just need to run wires to it.

C) computer mounting in the glove box. about to start wiring but need some last locations determined like coil packs. I need to relocate them due to headers and make new wires. probably going to use kit msd 32079. I bought the seals it split grommet (overpriced) but it is 3" hole and I am going to open an existing hose for the harness. (SGS35100)

D) radiator hoses are done. I bought a heater core bypass loop hose online since it is a tight bend and two different sizes. The bottom hose i kind of had to cut. I tried using 21710 Gates from another forum since the end sizes were correct 1.5 and 1.75 but i ended up cutting in half and putting a tube in between them so i will have 4 hose clamps on it. The top was a universal hose with a 90 on it. (dayco 81491) both are 1.5" so i had to order a reducer on the block side for 1.25" (Gates 26390)

E) got my captain fab bracket for 76 / 79 power steering box. mounted it and its misaligned. not sure what i wanna do about this one yet, work my way up the trail. the box is 13/16-36 spline and the original shaft is 3/4. the 79 shaft i have I cut and it slips right over the original. still up in the air for what route to go. may have to add some u joints. I ordered a 3/4 rag joint but it obviously didnt fit so pay attention to what you need. I didnt realize there were two, what a dope.

Re: 1964 C20 Turbo LQ4 Build

more pics

one thing to note was that I heated and rotated the spout on the truck pump so it would be 90 to the radiator. thought it would be easier to find a hose.
