I wouldn't mess with them yet. See if the 68's cure the rich idle. What are they now?

Jets won't have an effect on idle unless its fubar. If it does then you have other problems to fix before you can get the idle right.

I would go ahead and put it back to stock and then follow the steps found in the articles.

Thank you for that, big DOH on my part. I was looking at the number thinking it big for primaries.

Re: Building a 383 looking for tips

Thanks Bruiser. I've tried jets from 66 to 77 taking PV out and plugging it. I bought a complete jet kit to do this. I'm going to put it all back stock with 70's in primaries And 80's in secondary and a 6.5 PV. remember this is a four corner idle carb.

Thanks Again for all the info.

Re: Building a 383 looking for tips

Are u happy enough w the Vortec heads? Doing the ever popular 'budget build" I started w 1999? Vortec heads from Chevy pickup. (they were free). Machinist is 'cleaning them up" and pocket porting. Not exactly what that is but read about it and he said yes you'll get a few more hp. He has bored .030 and installed budget Scat rotating assembly w 5.7 rods, cast crank and dished hyper pistons. From summit I just ordered 232/236 .510 .533 Howards Roller cam and lifter kit. Pro Form 1.6 3/8 self aligning roller rockers. (machinist said no prob reworking Vortecs for .533 lift) Said hes done it before????? Weiand Speed Warrior Vortec high rise intake. Vortev heads are making the build MUCH MORE COMPLICATED, dont think Id do it again. Carb Im waiting on. My engine builder is well known and very good. He almost insists on a ceertain Holley carb that costs 750-$850. (I foorget the part #) 750cfm. Says I'll never regret it, it will last forever and make 15+hp over Holley Edelbrks in $300 price range. So it all makes sense to me but the carb will be last while i save my $. Just bought sorta ratty 78 (i love it) $1,200 short C-15 to put it in. But...........How are your Vortecs on the 383?

It's Not your Carb making it smell Rich at Idle, It's your Cam... You have more Overlap than with a Stock Cam...
As Far as heads, I would agree, too much work to get Vortec's to accept lift over .480
and you need the special Intake...
Buy some Dart SHP's or Summit Heads

And My old 383 with a Comp XE 284 Cam and Dart Pro1 Heads, Demon 750 Carb got about 12 MPG

I disagree If you own the heads? pin (cheap) or tap the studs. use beehive springs and 7*locks. I run 525 on 1.6 rockers
