Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I plan to do a cummins powered suburban (4x4).
The way I'm "planning" on doing it is just swapping the suburban body onto the dodge frame. I figure I may end up with a body lift as I believe the dodge frame is wider than the chevy, so the body mounts will probably essentailly be on top of the frame. And then I can move them height wise with to make up any differences of aches for the rearend and what not. Then I'll have the towing capacity and drivetrain to support it as it was in the dodge. At this point, its just a plan. It'll be a few years until it happens. From what I understand, since the chevy frames are narrower, the cummins A/C compressor doesn't fit in the stock location, so it must be relocated if you run A/C. Oh yeah, then I'm going to put multiple layers of sound deadner on the firewall.....other wise I don't think my wife will ride in it |

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
its not a chevy but it has the 12v..... I would go with a truck like this instead of a c10... great and east swap... will have it on the road in a month or two... I am a serious cummins fan after owning a couple 650+ hp daily drivers...shooting for 800 on fuel and 1000hp on the bottle.. this 12v has been built and started as a 85,000 mile barn find last year...

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I say, Go for it if you want to. The fact is, that you can swap anything into anything if you have enough "cubic dollars". I once saw an Allison V12 (1710 cubic inch, 1600 HP) aircraft engine in a 64 chevelle.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I say do it! I am crazy enough to put a 68-72 {pile of parts} in a 2wd dodge and convert it to 4wd in the prosess! the hardest part is getting started!

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I am actually on my way to completing the project. I have had my fun with the 1 ton dodge and pulled the 12 valve and the 5 spd getrag at the end of last summer. My goal is to get the engine and transmission mocked up this summer and maybe get it driving. Though getting it road worthy might be a bit much for my timeline.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Glad to hear you went with it! All the local guys ragged on me for building a turbo 250 L6 motor and told me to just drop a small block crate.... BORING... everyone does that.... its good to have something different... in the end you will always have people intrigued by it and want to talk about it!

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Thanks, I don't have any pictures yet. I will post some in a little bit. The truck is actually not that nice. Very rusty but original with all the trim, I just put a different rust free bed on it before the winter hit.
I have everything to do it right, now I just have to do it. The previous year I had just gotten finished with the suspension, brakes, pretty much everything on the chassis was rebuilt. I converted to 5 lug wheels, power discs, all the normal hot rod truck mods. Just have to figure out that whole 1,000lbs of engine now. |

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
It isn't that bad in a 2wd chassis. The 4wd ones get tricky.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I agree with the boring statement also. I actually stopped frequenting this site as often due to the enormous amount of lowered short bed threads on wheels and tires. Man, you can only take so much of it.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Maybe you'll have to dig some more. There are a few cummins swap trucks on this site being built right now. You just have to cruise to find them and look for the non norm stuff.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
Suburban boys love those 12 Valves!
There is quite a bit of info in MosesBurb's thread (he's a stickler for details), The Story Of A Cummins Suburban (Lots Of Pics And I have a few pictures of my 12V/NV5600/Dana 60F swap in my build thread. The Dakota Cadillac (68 K20 w/ Cummins) And Dieselwrencher is a wealth of knowledge with anything Cummins related: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

Thanks for the suburban cummins swap. That is the most information I have seen on this swap in one place.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
I suppose if you were gonna swap a diesel into one of these trucks the cummins B series 12v or 24v would be the way to go. Kinda heavy and not especially responsive engines(although the 24V isnt too bad) as compared to the other light truck diesels but the cummins is so much more reliable than any of the other light diesel engines its practically a no-brainer.
Like others have said, beware of the 12 bolt if you're gonna tow with it. We had a ram 3500 4x4 in our fleet with a dana 80 rear axle that they used to plow with. If you've ever seen a Dana 80 compared to a 12 bolt the 80 is huge in comparison. I rebuilt the rear diff in it 3 times before I installed a detroit locker. After I installed the locker it would just break the rear axles so I dont even want to think about what that motor could do to a 12 bolt. |

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
The cummins may not be real responsive in stock trim, but any modifications will change that drastically.

Re: Cummins 12 Valve swap
My pump is turned up on my 1st gen 12 valve and it awakened the beast. You can double the HP and add about 250 ft-lbs with a socket set and a screw driver. My engine is a factory non-intercooled engine which came with bigger stock injectors, so besides an aftermarket fuel pin it is bone stock and makes a good bit of power.
Advancing the pump timing gains throttle response and fuel mileage too. My 1 ton got 24 mpg in 5th gear. |
