Re: Got a little done today....
I always use PB Blaster as opposed to WD. The best way to get stubborn bolts off without causing damage is with a breaker bar, preferably 1/2 inch drive. Huge difference in leverage.

Re: Got a little done today....
PB BLASTER + 1/2 breaker bar (and maybe use your legs, instead of arms) will loosen anything!

Re: Got a little done today....
Seems like the majority vote....I'll try that when I can...and I just went through your build thread...(sorry I haven't checked it in a while) and I think you should go with that bigger motor in his memory.

Re: Got a little done today....
breaker bar and a pipe to extend the handle to increase leverage those torq heads are strong and you'll break the socket before you strip the bolt head. If you can get your hands on some Kroil it will make pb blaster seems like junk. We use it at work it creeps into gaps supposedly one millionth of an inch or so it says on the can. Whatever it says it works AWSOME! Oh and if you can after you spray oil around the bolt head just hit the head a few times with a hammer help the oil get in not crazy swinging, but just a few taps. sounds dumb but it'll help with the gap between threads.
Nice truck by the way! |

Re: Got a little done today....
Thanks! (above) yeah, I just had to add the fully functional thing just so everyone would know it's a REAL cowl hood but even if it wasn't I bet you could drill holes in the raised portion and make it a real one

Re: Got a little done today....
Got my new hinges/ springs and brace kit from LMC today. I was going to just get a good pair of used hinges but I have a friend in the auto body business (who just happens to own a 70 Chevelle) and when I talked to him about helping me line the hood up he said that I defiantly shouldn't get used hinges on a new hood. So I went ahead and got new everything + a brace kit because it's kinda like cheap insurance......and It doesn't matter (to me) if it looks a little bad on the backside of the hood because I don't plan on showing it or anything. I hope to get the hood on Friday with my buddy but if he can't I probably won't get it on until late next week due to a trip to Austin this weekend.

Re: Got a little done today....
keep pluggin away at it...
my truck had similar issues getting it reliably driveable.. . - alot of gaskets on the motor to keep it from leaking all over - tuneups, rad /heater hoses- stuff to make it reliable! - recon rad - all new brakes little by little as everyone says... the nice thing is- parts are cheep for our squares! mine (an 81) turned antique this year! cool to drive an antique thats reliable with power steering , brakes, ac and good jams! |

Re: Got a little done today....
Went to go start up the truck tonight and took a minute for it to start...it turned over a little and then I tried again only this time instead of turning it just made a low "errrrr" noise for a second so I let off and then tried one more time and it started right up? Anyone know what that noise might have been? Well in the mist of doing that I kinda looked at the decaying dash pad and decided....I'm free tonight...I'll just yank it out.....came out pretty easy cept the left side was baked onto the metal dash and required a little force to break it away....also noticed that there were glass pieces all over the dash under the pad...I guess the windshield was knocked out once or so? Anyway I found out that about half of the clips were just gone...you could see where they were so I figured they might have fallen off but they were just gone.....couldn't find them...also found some plastic crap around the plug in for the "in glass" antennae....don't know what it's for so I left it alone but it was really hard to try to pry off without scratching the windshield with a knife or something.

Re: Got a little done today....
Got the cowl hood on today...and it looks GREAT!!!
only problem I ran into is the mounts for the wiper fluid shooter things at the back of the hood(sorry don't know what they are called exactly) there is a hole for the first screw but none for the second and since the hood doesn't have the grills like the last one it's rather hard to mount them...oh well I'll get those hooked up and finished another day

Re: Got a little done today....
thanks, I got the hood from LMC and it's good quality except one of the bolt holes (pass. rear) didn't want to line up very well and there were a few burs on the ends (I found that out with my fingers

Re: Got a little done today....
Well had a lot of free time today so I worked on the old truck....where to start, I knew that the brakes were a big problem so after letting it sit for a while checked the brake fluid to confirm there was a leak...well there wasn't so I went ahead and bled the brakes and now they work like it was factory fresh...maybe a little touchy, I decided to pain the roof of the inside cab for a little starter for the inside paint...and to get in a little practice...thought it came out okay....I fixed the idling problem by putting in new return springs since the old ones basically when stretched, stay stretched.....took apart air cleaner to find out that since I bought the truck last August that I wasn't running any air filter (who's dumb idea was that?) should have checked that earlier...and found out I have a two barrel carb instead of a 4 that I thought I had ...well here are some pictures for you viewing enjoyment...

Re: Got a little done today....
Just got a few parts on today...got a gas gauge, printed circuit and new review mirror...I just need my speedometer and then I can do my full gauge/circuit swap at once so I don't have to keep taking it apart to replace everything....and when it's done I can finally rely on my gauges.....the mirror was one of LMC's reproduction mirrors and for the most part it looks like a factory one....but a little better IMO

Re: Got a little done today....
Oh yeah, forgot to say that I picked up a tilt column from a 79....going to send it to a company nearby to be rebuilt and rewired....also considering a EZ wiring harness to switch to blades and to replace the hacked wires I have...
I have one wire that's supposed to be yellow (I think) and I goes from yellow, to blue, to purple, to blue again, and then back to yellow.......fun...
