This is a good read...we are "FILTERING" out the good and bad

Wow.I recently lost oil pressure and had a rod start knocking in me in my 327.I had used Purolator filters or wix for years.When I did my last oil change I let the guy at the parts counter talk me into getting the oil and filter special for 17.99.It came with a Fram filter.After reading this thread I cant help but blame the fram filter for killing my motor.I'm gonna cut the filter and check it out and see if the cardboard got into the oil passages and clogged my system.At least I saved $5 with the oil change deal.Then it cost me $100 tow in from town,$100+ in gaskets and all the other stuff I needed to change my motor out.I would be screwed if it wasn't for my good friend Steve who lent me a 350.I'll sum it up by saying F fram!

Can you run regular oil with mobil 1 filters or does it have to be synthetic?

I prefer AC Delco, but yeah ... FRAM sux ... that's why Ferrari uses them as their OEM filters.

Mobil 1 oil filters can be used with any type of motor oil, but of course Mobil recommends that you use Mobil 1.

The standard orange FRAM oil filters do indeed suck. However, FRAM has recently designed a new high quality oil filter called their Xtended Guard oil filter. FRAM claims you can use it for up to 10,000 miles, although I'd never do that. The filter element inside of it is improved tons over the standard orange ones, and they have eliminated the cardboard in these filters and replaced it with metal. From what I have seen in them they appear to be the same quality as the Mobil1 or Wix filters. They are about 3 times the cost of the orange ones, but you get what you pay for.

I, like many others, have used Frams for a long time with no issues. My choice of Fram has basically been dictated by what I found stacked on the back wall in parts stores (aka marketing).

However, after reading all this stuff and the extensive discussion on filters in other threads and links, I think I'll spend a couple of dollars more and start using higher quality filters in the future.

I've used fram in the past and seen oil pressure issues with them. Switched to wix and never looked back.

Not to offend but a lot of this is just personal preference (Coke/Pepsi). I think a $4.00 FRAM shouldn't be compared to an $8.00 (or more Wix).

If you said Brand X oil, you'd get a few people with stories on how they knew someone who wrecked their motor with brand x.

I took off a FRAM CH200PL filter and replaced with a NAPA gold. When I took off the valve covers last night, there was a lot of gunk in there. So, was it the FRAM filters the PO used for years? Or was it because the PO hadn't changed the oil regularly or did he use Castrol instead of Valvoline or was it a cheap PCV valve etc etc.

Really hard to judge brands of anything unless you have long term side-by-side scientific testing with the different brands in the same class.
FRAM makes 5 different grades of filters from the $4.00 extraguard up to Toughguard, extended guard etc. Maybe a high end FRAM is better than a low end WIX. Who knows.

I use a NAPA gold oil filter, with Valvoline oil, Champion spark plugs, regular gas and I get to the dump just fine. If I was running the 1/4 mile in competition where fraction of a second counts, you'd want to optimize everything.

Just my $0.02.

i've seen it with my own two little beady eyes.

Yeah we are in the parts business. rebranding and reboxing is common in the trade. I have seen stickers covering up multiple mfg's. Most all big chains do it. As long as it has the same warrantee it works I guess. We don't do the reboxing cause we are not big enough

Some parts are different pending the brands requirements.

So using this analogy you will not use a Fram filter because even though you never had a problem with one you don't want to take a chance on forking up an engine ... Way to call him out.....

Yeah I've been running Fram on my vehicles for years w/o a problem, but if they are as low quality as everyone is saying, its not worth the risk these days to take that chance anymore.
