Re: AC retrofit questions Old + New

A-6 is the factory compressor used on our trucks. It is the "long" or axial type. The R4 is the "pancake" style. Here are pics of both. Rebuilt A-6's are total junk....I went through 4 of them. They all leaked at the front seal. If going with an A-6, I recommend buying a brand new unit ($700 or so) or getting a nice used one from a junkyard that is not locked up (about $25). I bought a used one from pick n pull, and it works perfectly.

Here's another option for those wanting a factory look and wanting something more efficient than an A6 - It's an R4 in an A6 looking case. If you painted the aluminum case black, few people would notice, and the hoses come out the right places.

That is the A-10 offered by Old Air products. If wanting new and still looking original, this is the compressor to buy. I have also used these and they work perfect.

Re: AC retrofit questions Old + New

Digging this up again finally. Have been working on the chassis so just now trying to gather parts for AC again. Clinebarger I am going to take you up on your offer. Several more questions I had: I have read elsewhere that the Sanden 508 is too small for our condensors, do you think that is true? The Sanden 709 is slightly bigger and more expensive but would probably cost more. Or the one I previously noted. Since I have a whole box of real R12 in my garage that is from the 80's and I want a virtual refrigorator I was thinking that I would use the R12. I have a in perfect shape condensor for a 72 so would be handy to be able to use it as long as it is compatible with the Sanden. Also had another question for you: If I never care to use "outside air" for the heating/cooling system (on my DD I have not had it on anything except recirculate for literally years) do I have to retain the door in the cowl or even the door inside the cab? Was thinking that I could maybe fill the door in the cowl and totally remove the door from the kick panel inside. Also if I did that would I even need the vacuum bulb? Does the AC use vacuum anywhere except in the function of changing form recirculating to outside air? Sorry for the ignorance just trying to make everything work for me. Also is this the evaporator core and accumulator you were talking about?

A higher displacement compressor is a good idea considering the size of the condenser, The evaporator is also a little larger than most

Sanden also has a SD510, See what the price is on this? Maybe cheaper than a 7-piston?

In my opinion having fresh air in the winter is mandatory, Your going to have to restore the rest of the underdash part anyway....(New rubbers on the doors, make sure everything fits right & seals up) Might as well make everything work.

This is the one, You may have to turn the "Inlet" tube forward depending on the fitting you use

This one looks like it will work, I never wrote down the number of the accumulator i used

Re: AC retrofit questions Old + New

SD5 Series
Fixed Displacement - 5 Pistons
Ear Mount
SD5H14

138cc

6000 r.p.m

SD5H11

108cc

6000 r.p.m.

SD5H09

89cc

6000 r.p.m.

I belive the 508 is one of the ones above. (These are all 5 piston compressors)

The biggest ones that I could find on the Sanden website were the following:
SDV Series

Variable displacement - 6 and 7 piston models
Displacement can be varied from 5% - 100% for maximum efficiency
Displacement internally controlled by pressure valve

SD7V16

161.3cc

8000 r.p.m.

SD6V12

125cc

8000 r.p.m.

And then you have these (the 7 piston compressors)

SD7 Series
Fixed Displacement - 7 Pistons
Direct & Ear Mounts Available
Variety of Clutch Configurations
Flexible Porting Options

SD7H15

154.7cc

6000 r.p.m.

SD7H13

129cc

6000 r.p.m.

SD7B10

100cc

6000 r.p.m.

What do you think? I can build brackets to make anything work! 138cc for the 508 (if I am sorting the R134A numbers out correctly and 154.7cc for the 510. The bad news about the 510 is that I cannot find one that has a serpentine pulley.

Re: AC retrofit questions Old + New

The SD7H15 looks promising, And around the same displacment as a SD510.

A SD5H14/SD508 works OK, But the above compressors will help with you wanting to "hang meat".

You can swap the V-belt clutch to a serpentine clutch.

Re: AC retrofit questions Old + New

Every AC guy I talk to says to stay away if possible from the R4 compressors, if you can get a Sanden conversion and it will last longer.
