Re: Diesel C60?
Radiator hoses, various accessory brackets for the engine, etc. The engines themselves are pretty universal, but water pumps can vary a lot in how they route the heater hoses and the radiator hoses. Then you have things like alternator mounts for odd positions because of the air pump, etc.
I'm curious what all is universal to a big/small block or what's specific to the medium duty chassis. The radiator's look much bigger than any light truck I've seen. Higher cooling capacity isn't a surprise at all, but that also means the water pump might flow at a different rate too. |

Re: Diesel C60?
You could also go with a 4-53, but again more weight, but I've seen quite a few that have them.

Here is a 4-53T with a 10-Speed Road Ranger:
We could do without the talking in the video, but it's the only one I could find of it.

Re: Diesel C60?
500# is nothing to a light truck. Just bump the springs. 1t should handle it fine.

Re: Diesel C60?
Here is what a 4-53 looks (and sounds) like. This is a 4-53T. Looks like he has plans to drop it into a '72 GMC 1-Ton:

It runs and drives - so they say.
Did they let you have it for a K? |

Re: Diesel C60?
While I know about the use of the 4-53 Detroit Diesel two-cycle engine as well as the Toro-Flow D-478 V-6 in these, I wonder if any of the '67 to '72s were changed to the "Fuel Pincher" 8.2L diesel V-8 (available naturally aspirated up to 165 hp, or turbocharged with 205 or 230 hp) during the 1980s?
In theory, because the 1980-84 Chevy and GMC B6P school bus chassis did use the 8.2L, I believe these '67 to '72s could have had the 8.2L as a replacement engine for some customers. If any of you happen to have a '67 to '72 C50, C60 or M60 with the 8.2L, please let me know. Some of the '78-'80 C50s, C60s, M60s, C70s and M70s could be had with the 4-53T two-cycle diesel. For all you D-478 fans, this is what that engine sounds like (in this 1971 GMC TDH-3301 bus): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azZHQa9dgmU ~Ben Last edited by ClassicTVMan1981X; 07-05-2024 at 10:23 PM. |

The 4-53 was replaced in the C-60's by the 8.2L in mid-'80.

Re: Diesel C60?
Bob,
Still never checked my books, lol, but I was surprised to see a 4-53 listed for a '67 C-50 and 60 in the spec sheet above. Did it actually make it to production? And if it was, was this the last year for it? It wasn't that long ago that we were talking about the 4-53's not available in these mediums.

Re: Diesel C60?
Interesting. I clearly remember the '65 having a 4-53 as well as quite a few newer models as mentioned, but never saw or even heard of one in a '67-'69 Medium. I wonder what the reason was other than customer preference? Strange there weren't a lot more.

Re: Diesel C60?
Being noisy, slow, and somewhat expensive didn't help! Most of the 1978 and newer ones had 4-53T's in them. A little better.

Re: Diesel C60?
Sorry, couldn't find anything definitive. I think it was 1978.

Re: Diesel C60?
Sounds about right to me.
Sure would had been nice if it were 15 or 20 years earlier.
