Re: Husbands-*1969 C10 manual 3speed - camper special project

Will definitely snag a bunch of pictures when he gets home. Guy told him it had a 292.
It seems pretty good on gas so far.
And he doesn't need 2 go over 55... Man has a led foot and tends 2 get speeding tickets. Lol

This website is a great place to spend your time on the net. You should be able to fuind out everything you and "Grumpy" need to know to get the truck to safe driving condition. As has been stated those trailing arms should be your first priority and have to go.. You can buy new ones but you can probably pick up and original good used set in the parts section of this website.

So only the driver side trailing arm is Swiss cheese. The passenger side still seems solid.

Post Safety & 6 Bangers

FWIW, the 3/4 ton trailing arms are the same thing but beefed up & welded to prevent flexing, replacing them both with good used ones from a fellow member here is wise, the bushings are not fun to change but it's a do it once and be done deal .

The i6 engines will easily go *much* faster than one should drive them so be aware if it seems to use too much oil or leaks a lot, his lead foot might be the problem, not the engine .

3.) Need a new steering wheel and bearing (previous owner tried to pull the steering wheel without an actual puller .. looks like he took a hammer and chisel to it) so the wheel on there is not original nor does it fit properly.. I don't want to break the bank on a steering wheel so ideas?

4.) White cloudy ring around the windshield? Wtf is it and why? and can I make it go away!?

5.) Original Oil bath air cleaner ?.. like original looks like a tiny UFO.

6.) Parking break lines

7.) converting drum breaks to disc breaks

8.) New dash pad

9.) Suspension... Coil vs leaf

Real nice truck. Definitely looks to be a 250.

You should call every 67-72 Chevy truck parts company and request a catalog. There are others who do not print catalogs and have web sites, so save every one of them, as some offer parts not available elsewhere.

Manes Truck parts offers some good used parts which are not available aftermarket.

Judging from where you are located, you should be able to find junk yards and collect a bunch of needed parts there. Pick-A-Parts are your best bet for cost.

Heater Core, check Summit they sell a Copper/Brass one.

Brake lines can be purchased locally and bent to fit just get a pipe bender to prevent kinks.

Oil bath air cleaner is Ok if that is all you have. I would change it over to a dry element.

Drum to disc brakes is readily done. Two routes to take would be
A) Buy a complete kit for over $1,000.
B) Buy all used parts and convert it.
I took route A. Easier and I had the cash on hand when I bought the parts.

Suspension: You have coil and trailing arm so I would stick with it but look for replacement arms which are not rotted through.

Re: Husbands-*1969 C10 manual 3speed - camper special project

How the frick do I tell what engine this thing has? He was told 292 but everywhere I look online to research this truck says they usually had a 250. I tried reading all the numbers on the engine but some seem worn off and hard to read.

Measure the side covers or see where the fuel pump is.
Covers are 6” tall on 292.
Covers are 4”on 250.
Fuel pump behind motor mount is 292.
Pump in front is 250.

Post Free Advice

Most of the time you just need to include a clear, well lit photo of whatever you're asking about, there are plenty of us here who are Geezers that know and love the i6 engines .
