Re: Unusual motor swaps...

When the 88-98 body style was new, I remember one of the truck rags had a pic of an 88 or 89, that had "Like A Rock, With A Ford Block" on the tailgate. Kind of a slap in the face.....

they aren't efficient in size, but there is no denying the sound of a v12. Don't get me wrong, I love the mean sound of a SBC or a BBC, but those v12s are just wicked.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

I've seen one or two older pre-68 trucks on youtube where they transplanted a Trailblazer 4.2 DOHC inline 6 cylinder complete with 4L60E and fuel injection. One was even turbocharged.

I drive an 03 Trailblazer and am impressed with the power outa that motor, and 20 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.

The other thing is given the absence of much demand for these motors, I've heard of junkyards selling them complete for $300.

Could be a very interesting swap. Almost guarantees you won't run into anyone with one of those in an old C10 at your local Show and Shine.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Recently bought a '67 C10 with a Olds engine installed. Still trying to figure out the size and year. I think it's a mid 50's because it has center bolt valve covers and reverse gear is at the bottom of the gear selector. The previous owner didn't know either. Has plenty of power but I'm looking for a period correct small block to put in.

Just so you know.....the 265 &283 had the same stroke, the 265 was 1/8" smaller on the bore. If you want to play with a 283, you can stroke it to 307, using a 327sj crank(307), or bore it to 301(.125 over, stock stroke). Yes , the factory called it a 302 crazyL

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

ya the 265 and 283 had the same stroke BUT, the 265 crank was made better and can take more power/rpm so i take a small journal 4" block and put the 265 crank into it. the 3" stroke and 4" bore makes a 302, the power house used in the 67-69 camaro.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

Well I am going to put a 267 SBC in mine to get it running and get me inspired to get it going again. I have a 383 short block to go in later but I don't have all the parts to finish it just yet and with money being tight, the 267 is going in for a while. I figure it should be about like having a six under the hood.

Not sure of the location, I think it's at the Grampa in Law's barn, but I've got a 267 as well, out of a 79? Malibu, with something like 70000 miles but it got filled with water when a pipe burst in storage... We drained it before anything cracked but it's still siezed up from the water in the pan.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

I've got a slightly unusual motor...

478 V6 Toroflow diesel, but after this trip to the 'stan I'm pulling it for a 12V Cummins. Then maybe this will end up in my 70... Laying frame with a Toroflow.

267 for mock-up wright? My 267 would not hardly pull out the driveway. It took half a mile to get to 50 mph in my 71. That little motor will have to work real hard. A 250 six would be better or even a 305. Hope you have low gears. too much weight to get to the rpm happy place for the 267, I know, I just pulled mine out, I hated it. If it's all you have got, than it's all you got.

It's okay on power, you just need to know how to drive it. And even though it shares a displacement and many similarities, when you get into the bottom end it has a lot of beefed up parts that differentiates it from the gas motors: forged crank, cast iron camshaft, balance shaft, injection pump, and different heads.

I wish it shared parts, it's almost impossible to find stuff for this beast, hence why it's getting a Cummins re-power.

Re: Unusual motor swaps...

I have an article around here somewhere about a guy who put a Detroit 4-53 into a 70 GMC 1 ton, the truck got 20 mpg on the highway and around 15 pulling his 30 ft camper. He also pulled a heavy 3 axle trailer with loads in excess of 20,000 gross all over the country.
