Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

No, I used a tractor. haha

So update today...work a good 7 hours on the truck. I'm exhausted. lol Pull half the engine apart...everything you need to take a head off anyway...and get the head off just to find that it Wasn't a blown head gasket but a severly broken up valley pan gasket so what I thought was water, was just an air leak and some grease. So of course, I didn't have a valley pan gasket but I had plenty of silicon and gooed it up real good and threw it back on....buffed the block surface...cleaned out the head a bit and buffed the head surface...threw on a new head gasket and threw it back on....man that head is stinkin heavy...oh well...guess its good to be young and strong. lol Had no torque pattern so I torqued the bolts the same pattern as a straight 6. lol Think it worked fine. So get it all on...I decided to paint my intake and thermo housing while they were off...also painted the valley pan noticing...Wowza! Those are some BIG lifters in there. Looks like what they would use in a cummins. lol Cam is worn but the lifters seem ok. Have a slightly bent pushrod but nothing of major concern. I still have to adjust the valves...lol I won't go about how I went getting them back on. haha. And make sure I didn't foul a plug. Looking inside the engine is due for a Good cleanout and a rebuild. Compression is great 110-115 in all the cylinders( these were only 7.5.1 brand new mind you) but the valves are due for a lapping and the heads could use a good blasting and surfacing. Cylinders need to be honed and new rings...new cam as well. So in the future when my 66 is done I'm going to start picking parts and pieces for this big boat anchor and have my machinist clean it up real good and we'll git her going like new. Other than that...as of now I have some valves to adjust maybe later today. lol Oh yeah...and a big blowout hole in the radiator....sigh...its one of them Big harrisons to. lol

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

Alrighty!!!!! So Today's update!

The "want to work on my truck bug" Bit me again!

Went out and fired it up...ran like crap. lol Cause....two intake valves hanging way open all the time because I was to darn lazy(and tired) to readjust them after I put the head back on...never do it this way at home folks.... So...I thought, well...lets take both valve covers off and readjust them all while we're at it. Oh yeah...easy way to adjust solid lifter valves...do it WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING...BEATS the Heck outta doing one cylinder per time looking tdc ect...anyhow..that's another story..ya wanna know how to I'll do a video..Anyway! My big harrison rad blew a couple holes...so I jerked that out and put a spare one I had laying around in...no leaks now! (glitch in music) Except for a leaky old hard crusty rad hose. Ah well...cheap fix. So I'm happy...So..next couple things on the list...Carb kit, carb base gasket, new lower rad hose, better oil, and a new air cleaner. And I think we'll be ok! Video of her running tomorrow guys!

Haha! I badly want to get a 60-66 chevy or gmc truck project in addition to the three cars I got now haha XD. Let me know if you come across anything good! (to me, good is basically any 60-66 you can find, even just a lonesome cab XD)

Actually forget the 4th one. lol My boss was gonna give it to me but I found out it had Alot of cancer. Its a C30 with a big flat bed and duallys. Would have made a good turbo 292 build but I can't afford to try and fix more cancer than I'll have to already. He's gonna come let me steal parts though. lol Then it goes to the scrap yard.

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

Well, Crustine had her 1st "long haul" today. Went and picked up a load of manure at a friend's house...and drove home the long way. Bout a 15 mile round trip, and Man, That 305E v6 is a torque monster. I hauled a bigger load than in the pictures above...and that 305 pulls them hills without a sweat. People really need to see and realize how good these engines are. A 350 couldn't pull a hill like I was able to I Know that for a fact. I'm surprised at this engine. People call these things boat anchors and They're Nuts. My friend's drive way has a steep grade right at the end and..heck...I pretty much Idled up it in 1st(Idle set a 700)...pulled out and off we went...not a super high rever but you can feel that torque...needless to say...going 50 up a hill in 4th is a piece of cake. Never floored it...nothin. Awesome engine. I'm happy with this ol girl. Saw a couple other chevy's along the way. Great day hauling crap.

Your comment about the 350 is not true unless you are talking about the mid 70's smog motors. The gmc v6 makes good torque and it is rated at 220 ft/lb and a whopping 120 hp. Most tbi 350's make 300-310 ft/lb and 200 hp. The vortecs make 335 ft/lb and 260 hp. Just stating the facts.

Thanks! I'm running a 600 edelbrock on there...have a 600 holley I'm gonna rebuild and try to. I'm having fun experimenting. lol

Wrong on the 305 hp and torque ratings...unless you talking about a 305A Net hp. lol The 305E was rated a 165 hp and 280 torque. And true...the throttle body 350 my make more torque but at What RPM? I hit peak torque at 1600 and your 350 is lucky to have maybe half its torque at that much. I can lug mine up a hill in 4th gear and she'll hold speed because I have torque where as with a 350 since torque is gonna peak around 3000 you'd have to down shift to hold speed or else its gonna bog down and die because your loosing torque as you lower RPM whereas since I peak torque at 1600 and if I was driving 55 @ 2500 as the engine lowers in rpm from the stress it is actually gaining torque again causing it to keep going. That's where I'm coming from. Unless your 350 is a very low duration low rpm machine it just won't lug like a 305. And I know guys who will agree with me. But I don't wanna bog my thread with arguments. This is a build thread and not a debate thread.

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

Here's a video of how it runs. Have to hook of the throttle linkage and I'll take it for a drive. Since the video I have cleaned things up a bit. Hooked up the advance line...hid the pcv hose a bit better....strapped the fuel line to one of the hoses and converted to a metal filter. Things on the list for today are hook up the choke and modify my throttle linkage.

Well Crustine got a new windshield today. The old one had a huge spider web crack in it and I didn't want to be harassed by the law man about it so that's done. Also fixed that darn leak to so I'm happy.

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

Thanks brotha! Hope your weekend went well. I know some of the happenings. haha!

Well...worked on crustine more today and FINALLY.....well..I think FINALLY found out whats causing my "Once in awhile rough running issues" It'll run fine and then sometimes it will idle like crap and want to die...turns out the old vacuum advance pump isn't moving a bit and only that particular style can be used on these engines. So Tuesday I'll be calling auto parts stores to see about either a new distributor or a new vacuum advance pump. Glad I found the problem and hope to have it fixed to...really wanting to drive this thing. Did drive it in the field and...yeah...she's woken up and grumpy. haha. Yep...also got the throttle linkage figured out...wasn't that hard...just extended it and welded it and walla. Pictures tomorrow and it ain't a pretty throttle linkage. lol So hopefully we'll be getting this electrical issue fixed and maybe finally be safely on the road. Later guys.

Reset the points to .016 gap and that seemed to help Alot. Still have no vacuum advance but she seems to be just fine. New dizzy on its way.
