Actually, I do. Here's my LS powered Mazda Miata. The motor started out as an LS2. Ported L92 heads, ls2 hot cam. new lifters and rockers and the intake to match the heads. Dyno tested at Beck Racing in Phoenix after I finished the engine build yielded 485 HP at the flywheel. A second cam change, new tune profile to match the cam by John Spears raised that to 535 HP at the flywheel.

let's see your work. Post it up. Then I might not laugh at you.

Well besides all the motor info, apparently I learned how to start a giant argument lol just mention horsepower and the wolves attack lol sorry for unknowingly instigating this guys. Thanks for the info regardless

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

While I have yalls attention, I might as well ask. If go the 6.0 and l92 heads what are my options as far as intake and front runner kits? Mast, fast,Holley, edelbrock, billet specialties, march, etc?

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

Check out leroy brown, has had several junkyard ls engines and chineese turbos. Runs 9s npw headed to the 8s with most recent build.
Making big power is easy with an ls engine and can be cheap. Unfortunatly most drivetrains won't last and there's not many cheap transmissions so spending money on the trans and rear end will happen when you start making power. 4l80e with transgo stage 2 kit seems to be a pretty hot ticket for OD price and relaibility. Head over to sloppy mechanics.
Ls engines can handle a lot of boost, don't get greedy with timing.

With enough money and boost you can do anything

3.6 liter 1300 hp 911!

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

I have had a 580 rear wheel horsepower Buick V6. It had a stock crank, stock rods, ported stock heads and a ported stock intake manifold. The focus on so much power is a lot of boost forcing through all of the stock stuff along with A LOT of fuel. If you have horses in the stable...you have to feed them!

For this reason, I'd have to say go with a bone stock 4.8, add a 76mm turbo, a intercooler and upgraded fuel system to keep up with 84lb injectors with a tune. With 93 octane and 14psi of boost, it should get you to your goal.

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

6.0 with l92 heads. I would do a ls3 intake. I remember you were trying to be efficient with your cash?
If so a regular f body or vette or even a truck front acc drive will work just fine without the big money. look for a ly6 motor it will come with the heads you want and its up to you to either keep the vvt or remove it. I built a ly6 for my 67 Camaro kept the vvt and ran a texas speed vvt-2 cam with mild port work and exhaust and a good tune. got me 455 at the wheels with a 6 speed and runs live a daily driver and it was plenty fast. I am currently building a 5.7 with a fast ez efi mild cam shoul d be around 375 when its all done.
good luck and don't worry about the final number too much.
375 plus horsepower in a truck is no joke fun

Don't worry about the know it all's you get sometimes here
Some really are trying to help but cannot help coming off as jerky

i mean what i would like most is a 6.2 from a gto or escalade but when they do come up theyre not cheap, 6.0 blocks are everywhere.

Neat stuff.

This car belongs to a friend of mine. Since the article was written he has dipped into the 8s. This is through a TH400 and on drag radials. No slicks, no tub. And he drives the car to the strip about 100 miles round trip. LS is the way to go for big power.

Those aren't valve covers. They are Edelbrock cast aluminum LS engine coil covers with the Edelbrock name ground off and polished out.

Why share? I don't do drugs and I do not make a practice fooling myself, either. There is a huge difference between horsepower developed at the flywheel and how much of that actually reaches the rear wheels. Losses usually range from 10-12 percent. If the tires are inadequate to support the horsepower applied by the drive train a chassis dyno will read only the "grip" applied to the dyno wheel unless, the dyno drum is bolted to the rear axle hubs. That is why I looked for a shop with an engine test stand to measure horsepower at the flywheel.

Most of the foolish children who throw around "RWHP" as a measure are totally ignorant of what a chassis dyno does, what it's measurement errors are, what it takes to generate those numbers and how to build an engine that does so successfully because they are just armchair mechanics who read magazines instead of spending the time turning wrenches.

Armchair tuners with their little riceburner racers. That's why I stuffed an LS motor into a Miata. It gave me a window to put my cartoon in!

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

Stock 4.8 or 5.3 will be all you need. Haven't done it to my truck yet, but running a stock '99 5.3 with a ebay gt45 and it put my all steel, full interior '69 camaro in the 10s. I mean stock cam and all. I usually only spin it to 6100 rpm or so.

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

I agree RWHP numbers, and honestly HP numbers in general are meaningless.

My Camaro "dyno'd" 445rwhp (ported 243's, 236/242 cam, FAST intake, 347ci) however has only trapped 122.8 at 3450lbs.

I really enjoy the LS platform, have been doing my own tuning via HPtuners, built my own wiring harness, etc.

Also, for the record, here's some "cam only" LS3 interwebs results. Always remember its on the internet to obviously it's true.

http://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomete...24-timing.html

http://ls1tech.com/forums/generation...c-s-video.html

http://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamomete...m-results.html

But back to the discussion, making the power "all motor" is like bragging about mowing your lawn with a weedeater. With forced induction (read: turbo) being so avaliable today that's the most economic path to take.

Back in 69 I put a 425 hp 409 in a 63 short 1/2 tn and it would break loose whenever you hit passing gear fishtail until you let off the gas

Back in 2006 I put a 572 in a 67 stepside and I still spin the rears without shifting. Last time I measured the black marks it left they were 300 feet long and the only reason they were that short is I was coming to a T intersection and needed to brake!

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

Fitz is Right, I did the LS2 Miata thang too, years before there were any kits. I did a one-off design / build from the ground up LS normally aspirated HP is easy although it can get spendy. Here's my LS2 Miata work Fitz, was only 450 HP sold it and do LS truck now for fun> It's OK to be a Older Miata Hater, the guys that drive them with LS motors are more than satisfied spanking Dodges, Camaros, Mustangs and various other comparable Slow Elk cars. I've been a GM lover my whole life, even in a light foreign body. There were No Mazda badges, emblems, nothing except the Red Bow-ties on the quarter panels on my car.

Re: easiest eay to 500 rwhp Ls?

It's also important to gear the rear end right when making a engine change. I had a 3600lb car run slower when I swapped in 3.73 gears. I originally had 3.42's. All this while keeping the rpm's below 5500. Its common for people to to *over-gear* a high-torque engine and never realize they can actually go faster with a taller gear.

I also trapped 123mph in the quarter with 3.27 gears in a 3500lb car. Again, all this was done without going over 5500 rpms. Turbo's and super chargers don't need steep gears because of the tremendous low to mid-range torque they produce.

One more thing, you don't need 3.73 or 4.11's in a light weight car with a high-torque engine. I've proven some *old timers* that think *bigger is better or more is better* when actually, it's not.
